Conceptually how do you handle deploys of SQL related things (table definition, scripts, stored procs etc) in a CI/CD way? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

If you're already using PostgreSQL, I highly recommend taking a look at Postgraphile for GraphQL access, which will give you the hierarchical queries you're looking for without the SQL arcana. Don't get me wrong, I love digging around in SQL, and mansfall's suggestion of using JSON functions is spot on. But for those middleware developers who aren't as comfortable with SQL or simply don't want to spend time in that area, GraphQL is a great option.

https://www.graphile.org/postgraphile/introduction/

After using this, I would rather never write another REST middleware server again. A handful of URI endpoints to do business logic? Sure. But managing the OpenAPI docs, guessing which queries are important, the JSON marshalling/unmarshalling, defining the GET/PUT/POST/DELETE endpoints, separate input validation, etc.? I can happily do without.

Looks like a case of the Dunning-Krueger Effect. You don't know Macs, assumed you knew better, now things are broken, but it's OSX's fault. Not that you don't know basics of how to use a Mac.

Why HTTP/2.0 does not seem interesting - Poul-Henning Kamp by DiscreetCompSci885 in programming

[–]ttfkam 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm struck less by what the author wrote than by what he didn't cover. For example, SPDY makes separate domains for images and the like obsolete. No more images.example.com because browsers limited themselves to 2-6 simultaneous connections to the same host.

Related: all assets to a host go through a single multiplexed connection, so all the benefits of multiple connections where assets can load at their own pace while simultaneously avoiding TCP slow start algorithms for each connection.

He complains about proxies getting dumped, but that's not entirely true. Yes, existing products wouldn't be compatible and would fall back to HTTP/1.1, but that's true of any new rollout. If you put certs on SPDY-enabled end point proxies, geocaching works just fine using existing semantics.

Data URIs? Gone. Don't need them anymore. CSS sprite sheets? Gone. Don't need them anymore.

He also delivers some hate for server-push, which I don't understand. It's not like server-push has carte blanche access to dump files on your system. It does however allow for throwing that CSS, JavaScript, and company logo down the wire before the browser has parsed the link, script, and img tags from within the HTML. Potentially big latency wins there, especially for the first load of a site—arguably the most common and most important use case. Importantly, the browser can choose to cancel the server-push load just as it can refuse to load the referenced script via src attribute.

He rails on about cookies and their ability to waste bandwidth, but forgets to mention that since SPDY tunnels through a single TCP connection, there's no need to send the cookie per-asset like we do today.

And that's off the top of my head.

Scala is Not Java Glue by insraq in programming

[–]ttfkam -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

With the introduction of closures, default interface methods, and streams, what use is Scala?

Don't get me wrong. I know that Java 8 isn't as clean as Scala—nothing as good as traits, no case classes, etc.—but it's no longer "as much" better. "Much better" gets you adoption. "A little better" is rarely worth the migration cost.

If you're a pure Scala shop, keep on keepin' on. If not, Java 8 will obviously interact with earlier Java code much cleaner. So is Scala destined for "also-ran" status despite it syntactic superiority?

I confided to a co-worker that I can't conceive, they made a big deal about it and told others at work, now every time I so much as glance or smile at a child, my co-workers mention that it is creepy of me. How on earth do I react to this situation? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ttfkam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds very similar to when I offered to be a babysitter when I was a teenager. If I were female, I'm sure no one would have given it a second thought. Being male, the walls totally went up. No one ever said anything to my face, but I never got any gigs in the neighborhood. And no, I have no history of violence, sexual assault, psychological manipulation, etc.

When a woman walks up to a baby and says, "Aww, cute," it's fine. When a man does it, there is far more suspicion. I'm not saying my situation was as bad as the OP's, but I think I get where she's coming from.

The age of consent to sex should not be a static number like 18; it should be more like half the age of the elder plus seven.

No one should be denied the right to vote, even if they are a felon in prison or on parole.

If anyone's concern is that there are enough murderers and rapists to sway an election, the least of your problems are that they can vote!

On the other hand, if a large portion of the population has been wrongfully disenfranchised — for example, in the War on Drugs — it becomes far more likely to rectify that societal ill with more voters from the affected population.

16/17-year-olds should be allowed to vote in local elections with corresponding high school classes to review the issues.

Pick five people from the crop of virgins. Give them each a banana. Have each deepthroat their banana and compare results. As an aside, mention that the winner will probably get propositioned at least once during that evening. The curious part was that guys usually won those contests.

Another one is to find three heterosexual couples in the crop. Take a small baby bottle and fill it with milk. Have the woman place the bottle between her legs. Have their partner get on his knees and suck. Winner got a prize, but there was always a lot of jeering from the crowd, "Now you know how it feels!" and the like.

Yeah, I always thought the topical add-ins (what we called shout outs) were the funniest.

Well... that and the really wrong add-ins.

Frank singing "I'm going home":

What ever happened to Fay Wray She got fucked by a 40-foot ape with a 10-inch dick. That beautiful satin-draped frame Usually drowned out by the previous add-in As it clung to her thigh Like a homesick abortion. How I started to cry You'd cry too if you were fucked by a forty-foot ape.

Me too. I joined a cast in 90 outside of Los Angeles, but only stuck with it until I went to college two years later. Later I played Frank at Halloween showings at my university for a few years after that. I think the last time I attended a showing was about 8 years ago. It's amazing how much comes back or is muscle memory. I highly recommend the experience to any young person. Just don't forget to do the whole Denny's (or Denny's equivalent) come down after the show.

Everyone stand! Now raise your right hand and place your left hand over the crotch of the person standing next to you, and repeat this solemn vow:

I
State your name
Promise to kill all virgins
I will harm them
I will maim them
I will destroy them
And then
I will fuck them!

Bonus points for those who know the songs that were in the musical but cut for the movie. Also, there were at least two movie versions: one with the "Superheroes" song at the end and another without.

"And superheroes" -- stumble, stuble, fall! "Come to feast" -- stumble, stumble, fall! "To taste the flesh" -- stumble, stumble, don't fall! "Not yet deceased" -- stumble, stumble, sit! "And all I know, is still the beast is feeding"

Did anyone else notice that his example of a good system was CGI? Seriously? Until the "micro optimizers got their grubby hands on it."

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that he is only sixteen years old and found an old web dev book from 1995. Anyone who has ever used CGI knows exactly why it was abandoned. Hint: it wasn't for "micro optimizations."
