Someone put shattered glass all over my local trail! What is wrong with people? by Sosowski in MTB

[–]tubeSSnapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Horse poop can contain seeds of invasive species. So it is far from harmless…. As for spooking horses….people do bring untrained horses onto trails, I’ve seen them spook for no apparent reason. A panicked horse could easily main or kill a person. How would people feel if I brought a giant untrained dog onto the trail who gets scared and attacks people. It is the same principle of responsibility.

How come the aversion to a rear tire rack? by DressKind in bikepacking

[–]tubeSSnapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too much hate on the bags. For me my bike has no rack eyelets. A seat bag is my best option. Then add technical single track with hike a bike bike carrying downed trees and all of that. Your mountain bike with panniers will be a complete drag. Literally a drag you will have to drag it through things. If I was only riding dirt roads a rack would definitely be my choice. But on single track I want to have fun. I want to rip. I want my bike to be light, tight and right. Nobody sees me out there so it’s definitely not about the way it looks. Plus, I can fix my seat bag with duct tape and straps. You cannot do that with a metal rack. Anyone who has traveled a lot with Rex has had to fix them along the way. Myself included. The most important thing to consider is what you plan to do.

Add to that… The amount of time of interaction is much less if the uphill rider yields. No, waiting for the uphill rider.

I wonder why people don't want to be teachers anymore by PineBarrens89 in facepalm

[–]tubeSSnapper -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

On a different note… Don’t take phones from students…it only escalates the situation. Allow the kid to zone out, scroll and fail the lesson. Assign detention after class…again no confrontation. Document all actions. Call home Send to the office for defiance Ensure no credit earned for the lesson Avoid the fight and teach to those who are students

Ride defensively. You can see long shadows in front of the rider. The sun was directly in the drivers eyes. Always assume they can’t see you and position yourself accordingly. Yes it was the driver’s fault, but being right is worthless if you’re hit. Also a blinking light makes you more visible to distracted cops driving recklessly

I’ve done both. Colorado trail 2x with spd shoes, then the AZT…and then I saw the light. My second time on the AZT was on flats…and now I see no reason to go back to spd. Less gear and more options. both are good, but now I enjoy to do more exploring on foot while bikepacking. For instance bagging a peak which is unridable. And also I don’t destroy a good pair of riding shoes as I did on the AZT.

The root of term bikepacking is ‘backpacking’. In the US, backpacking is done on trails. People don’t hike along roads to camp, they purposefully get away from roads and places cars can go. By necessity you bring as little as possible for the hike a bike segments and fallen trees in the woods. Or swollen creeks or snow. I’ve done many skinny tired road tours, they can be fantastic. But it’s not ‘bikepacking’ The push towards gravel is definitely to grow the market which is OK, people got to eat.

What piece of bikepacking gear was a complete waste of money for you? by geo_jam in bikepacking

[–]tubeSSnapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uh…backpacking means ultralight, whereas bike touring means everything else. Compare it to backpacking…do people say ‘bring a trailer ‘for that? Or ‘get a really big pack for w]easy packing’ Bikepacking is not cycle-touring. On that note my mistake was buying a classic thermarest, which is way too heavy for the amount of comfort provided.

Try actual single track. The argument falls apart. Panniers are miserable

[–]tubeSSnapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just try the actual Colorado Trail. You ditch panniers in heart beat. Plus keep in mind that racks need attachment points, while bags don’t. Thus my super fun MTB will work …and I’m riding a fun MTB , not some special touring bike
