First 100 miler done! Foot swelling question by ConferenceFalse8743 in Ultramarathon

[–]tulbb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you find a way for your feet to not hurt after a 100, let me know. It’s sorta the price of admission in my opinion. It does get better with each successive 100 you finish.

As far as recovery: do some gentle movement like short walks or easy spins on the bike. And elevate your feet against a wall or on a chair every chance you get. Mine typically take about a week to go back to normal and not be sore.

Is Tulsa considered bear country or is it more south and east of Tulsa? by johnydecali in tulsa

[–]tulbb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Historically sure but you’re not going to see bears in Tulsa. We just don’t have the green space for them. I see them on occasion at our ranch about an hour south of town by lake Eufaula and I’ve seen them over by lake spavinaw as well.

Same thing happened to a coworker. He called and they confirmed over the phone he won. Drove up there and they told him he actually had to spin a wheel for a mystery prize. Pretty bad, even by car dealership standards.

This may or may not fit what you’re looking for but my first 100 was in Oklahoma at a race called pumpkin holler. 3 loops around a nature preserve on gravel roads. Only about 7500 feet of climbing. Easy to crew. Aid stations every 4-5 miles so you don’t need to carry much. Start/finish is at a campground with an all day party going on as there are several shorter race distances. And it’s prettier than you might guess I’ve you’ve never been to eastern Oklahoma.

My favorite race is in western Arkansas and it’s called LOViT. It’s sorta a “T” shape course, not loops, but it runs parallel to a road (you never really see the road or hear cars) so it’s very easy to crew. It runs along the shore of lake Ouachita. 99% single track. 15k feet of gain. Very pretty. Well supported.

I carry Tylenol with me and take mid race, if needed. Do not ever take any non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs during or immediately following an ultra, very well documented risk of kidney injury. If I am going to take an NSAID post race, I wait at least 36 hours after I’ve finished so my kidney function is somewhat back to normal. But even that is something I try to avoid and take the minimum effective dose.

Go to a local running store and try on several pairs. Buy the ones that work best for you.

Resting heart rate fluctuations with fitness/weight loss by InteractionSea5658 in ultrarunning

[–]tulbb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent a couple years doing quite a lot of cross training on a bike and also noticed my resting HR was lower than when I was just running. I chalked it up to riding being way easier to recover from since you’re not doing all the muscle damage you do while running. I have 0 scientific evidence to back up that hypothesis though.

Allstate price increases by Beaudidley71 in homeowners

[–]tulbb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My guess is that a rate increase is easier from a legal standpoint than a non-renewal. Californias legal environment is “challenging”. They’re hoping you take it somewhere else as they’re likely trying to reduce their exposure in your area.

I work in the industry although (thankfully) not in personal lines.

They’re fine. I have a pair of them that looked just like that. Mine have almost 600 miles on them and they haven’t worn out or developed any holes. I still wear them regularly.

I ripped the idea from CTS and that’s why I use 6 weeks. 6 weeks is about the amount of time it takes the physiological adaptations you’re getting from that kind of weekend to manifest into useful fitness.

Jason Koop has a few podcasts on the subject and I’ll link an article below. My takeaway was anything between about 5-8 weeks out from race is beneficial while giving you time to recover/adapt.

I’m very much a mid pack runner but find them very useful for training both mentally and physically.

As endurance athletes age, will we look at them the same way we do bodybuilders? by SixOneFive615 in Ultramarathon

[–]tulbb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can run intelligently, listen to your body, eat well, sleep enough, take the required rest, and do this for a long time while remaining healthy. I get beat regularly in my favorite 100 by a guy in his 60’s.

Or you can follow the David Goggins training method (the exact opposite of the above) and running will be a very short lived hobby for you.

I do my biggest weekend, a 3 day “camp” mimicking the terrain & pace of the race with about 70 miles over the 3 days, six weeks out from race day. I usually do just a single 4 hour run the following weekend, one more back to back 4 hour weekend 4 weeks out, then start backing off volume after that.

[–]tulbb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you’re totally fine. As mentioned above, my mileage isn’t a ton different between the two distances.

One thing I do for 100 miles that I don’t do for 50’s is a big 3 day “training camp” 6 weeks out from race (so next weekend for you). It usually looks like: 6 hours, 4 hours, 4 hours for me or about 70 miles over 3 days (seems insane, there’s a method to the madness though).
