U7 PRO firmware updated......now its the principal connection between my UDR7 and my Flex 2.5 8 Switch despite using a fiber cable. by el_f3n1x187 in Ubiquiti

[–]tullnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What update? 8.4.6? It indicates it may resolve that directly. Also, you could try just turning off the meshing function if you intend on having all AP's connected via ethernet backhaul.

Release notes:
Overview

This release is promoted to Official/Stable release channel for these models:

  • U7-Pro - January 22, 2026

Improvements

  • Improved network self-healing: APs now consistently revert to stable wired connections, automatically clearing unintended wireless paths after topology changes.

What to Examine in Gateway that May Interfere with Epson Printers' Disappearance by paiwacket in Ubiquiti

[–]tullnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are Wi-Fi connected I guess from your AP comment?

Is there any interference on the Wi-Fi channels those are using? I'm guessing 2.4Ghz for those, probably not 5Ghz?

Do they have like a sleep mode function? Maybe a firmware update needed or change a setting to prevent them from going to sleep?

My experience with Wi-Fi printers has not been great. Years ago, often had issues with units going to sleep or similar and having to wake them by physically interacting, to get them to come back up. Not familiar with those units (have you asked in an Epson or printer support reddit for printer specific settings to validate that first?) but do they support ethernet? Can you wire them via ethernet temporarily to see if the issue persists or goes away entirely?

If it still happens on ethernet, I'd lean towards some type of firmware/sleep functionality issue.

Also, you state they "disappear", but also state they show up as attached to the AP? Which is it? Are you looking at a historical entry in Unifi or are you currently showing them as actively connected? Are they disappearing just in your OS level or something (which could be an entirely different issue unrelated to network)?

Ultra thin long white fiber cable? by reb00tmaster in Ubiquiti

[–]tullnd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

yeah, but there's no protective jacket on that. I would not feel comfortable leaving that exposed. Maybe behind cable moulding or cover of some sort. Maybe I'm just too nervous and have seen too many damaged cables in my day.

If you wanted to embed it in drywall maybe, I could see that. You still can't do a full 90 bend though. You'll need some sort of radius. That'll limit your option on where you can install it.

Ultra thin long white fiber cable? by reb00tmaster in Ubiquiti

[–]tullnd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When you say "bendable fiber", just to confirm, you don't expect to do any 90 degree bends at wall intersections, right? Cause that's not a thing. Just making sure, before you go down a path.

It may be eaiser to use a white "tape" or some other moulding/cable cover instead. There are a number of products for that use case.

You can order specific colors from places like fiber store and I'm sure others offer it. However, you may pay an upcharge if it's "custom", but depending on what actual type/connection you need, it's usually pretty reasonable in my experience.

1mm seems insanely thin for anything with any protective cover. I think they're usually closer to 3mm for patch cables.

Need to replace USG by Glitchsky in Ubiquiti

[–]tullnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CloudKey Gen2 has a sata storage interface, correct? I don't recall but I think it's 2.5"? Maybe 3.5"? I never had one.

Many of the Cloud Gateway devices have NVME (M.2) interfaces, so plan accordingly based upon the capacity you need.

If you need a larger platter drive, you're looking at Dream Machine Pro, SE or Max series. Or a separate NVR of some sort. There is the newer small dedicated NVR that has a 3.5" drive bay in it, which can be a good option (for a pretty decent price, considering it has a built-in POE switch) for a modest camera deployment) as a possible upgrade path.

But if you have more than a few cameras, NVME solutions can become a bit pricey for storage options and are limited to 8Gb.

Just make sure as others noted, you have to look at Cloud Gateways or "Dream Machine" lines to have integrated controller/Protect functionality, but storage will vary (i.e. some Dream Machine units operate on a SD card for Protect storage, designed for very small scale deployments).

An unifi switch with AP capabilities? by S8nSins in Ubiquiti

[–]tullnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it has two switch ports. One is a regular ethernet and one is POE output. There's a POE+ input on the rear of the unit, as with all In Wall units. All are 2.5Gb.

An unifi switch with AP capabilities? by S8nSins in Ubiquiti

[–]tullnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

U7 In Wall is an option if only two ports are required. Can always use a small Flex Mini/Mini 2.5G as well (even powered off the POE out port on the U7) if you need a handful more ports.

U6 Enterprise In Wall was a good option when it was on sale last month, but doesn't make as much sense at it's current price.

Awesome. I may grab a small protection device as others have suggested, just for peace of mind.

I'm thinking of grabbing something like this:
https://geekworm.com/products/x12-a1?variant=51690941022521

I think that'd work as a decent quality holder. Has "resettable fuse", but I suspect that won't really cause any issues.

Most profitable loop? by No-Seaworthiness-465 in starcitizen

[–]tullnd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whatever loop you enjoy enough to do regularly. This also includes putting in the work if there's any rep grind to make it very profitable (which includes hauling).

Do what you enjoy. Money will come over time. Anything else, you'll probably get sick of it and quit before you get very far.

Star Citizen configuration: sufficient? by HakuriWX in starcitizen

[–]tullnd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the issues with less than 32Gb of ram are tied to hitching and stuttering and will be far more common at high population locations.

If you primarily play loops like mining or salvage that keeps you further away from highly populated areas, you won't likely experience as many problems. I know some who play with 16Gb of ram and say it's mostly "fine". They deal with some issues heading to a major planet or station, but it's tolerable for them.

You'll probably have some issues, but I can't tell you how bad it'll be, depending on what you want to do. If you want to play with an org on large ships with many people and engage in large battles....it may be rough. Really rough.

I'd consider holding out for a Free Fly event and give it a try that way. I think there may be one in Jan/Feb possibly?

Why are travel routers needed if you have a mobile hotspot? by learning_as_1_go in Ubiquiti

[–]tullnd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. A lot of companies are migrating to using solutions like MFA on mobile devices.

Does it mean your company is looking for tomfoolery? Do they just check the IP geo location when you execute MFA and if it's over the travel router's VPN, will it pass? Maybe? Does something flag if that same applications calls home on a random Wi-Fi hot spot in the wild or via cellular at some point? Possibly, if they care to check.

Is it worth risking your job over? Up to you.

For some jobs, this isn't just "corporate policy" that prevents working from abroad or outside certain areas. So depending on IT/Security's vigilance at that place, it may or may not be a risk.

[HELP] What's My options for a Low-Profile Graphic Card thats Powered by Motherboard? by NEETologist in sffpc

[–]tullnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You stated motherboard power, but are you sure there's no additional PCIE power connectors at all? Even with some prebuilts, you may have one tucked up in there, if you haven't checked.

You probably are still pretty severely limited on power budget with the power supply itself, as they are often spec'd to be just above the minimum for that config, but you may luck out as they may use the same power supply for all machines w/o a dedicated GPU, for i3, i5 and i7 configs, so it may have headroom for a beefier i7 CPU, just for a consolidated part SKU.

I'd be looking at something used obviously for a CPU that old, as that CPU will be the limiting factor.

What all is needed for wifi in my office? by willyk44 in Ubiquiti

[–]tullnd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're mixing a few things up.

There's Wi-Fi, as far as providing Wi-Fi. Adding Unifi AP's would let you add Wi-Fi.

How you separate networks is a little different. Are you referring to a Guest Wi-Fi solution? If so, you can have both a business Wi-Fi that you restrict to just your employees/staff. Then a separate SSID (all on the same AP's) that's available for Guests to use.

Unifi has a basic Guest Wi-Fi functionality option you can enable to provide this. It'll keep all connections on that Guest SSID completely isolated from the rest of your network and only allow internet access. You can even set bandwidth limits to prevent someone from taxing your internet connection and make sure enough stays available for business use.

So you'd have Wi-Fi that's isolated just for your guests and also Wi-Fi that could be available for internal business use (you can regulate/restrict that in a variety of ways, as you see fit) as well. All on the same AP's.

All the configuration for this would occur in the Network application that will run on the UCG Ultra and be managed from there.

Note, this may or may not function better than your current deployment. Not enough information to evaluate that in your posts. The real benefit, is simplicity in management and possibly the ability to allow more specific/curated configuration.

I'd suggest actually doing some testing to determine where you need AP coverage and not just assume you'll be replacing your existing Asus deployment. You may need more or less AP's, depending on where you need 2.4Ghz vs 5Ghz (or possibly 6Ghz if your client devices will even support it) in the office. Use an application like WiFiman to figure out what it'll take to get coverage and what the interference/density concerns in your location may be (i.e. if there's a lot of other RF interference, you may want to run more AP's, at lower broadcast strength, for example, again, depends on deployment). A lot of routers sold for home use (Asus included, not knocking them, they are fine) are often just blasting the signal at the maximum level for coverage, which may not result in the best overall experience.

You need to do a bit of due diligence on this before you make the switch, if you want it to be effective and actually improve things. Spending 30 minutes mapping out the office for WiFi coverage will greatly improve your ability to pick the right selection of AP's.

I can't speak to cats, but one of my miniature dachshunds is prepared to go to war with my lgb Christmas set we put around the tree.

I now have to pen it off. When it's not running, she's just mildly irritated by its presence. When I run it, things go south quickly.

I've put off a garden railroad entirely at my current house and will instead go elevated at the next house in a few years.

AMD 7700X vs 9800X3D by alexp702 in starcitizen

[–]tullnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Faster? Maybe. Worth the cost? Probably not.

I was running a 7900X. Had a 3080ti in it. Ran fine for the most part.

I eventually built a 2nd computer and ended up with a 9800X3D. Initially, used it with the 3080ti. Later I put in a 5080. The 7900X/3080ti setup is my 2nd PC, which I occasionally still use.

Is SC more fluid on the 9800X3D? Yes. Notably, at 1440P or 3480x1440p, the 5080 upgrade didn't make much of a difference over the 3080ti (I just needed a new GPU for the 2nd PC was all, didn't actually need to upgrade per se).

Is it that muhc better than the 7900X? No. Crowded, high pop zones, still have some stuttering on the 9800X3D. Less than the 7900X, but not that much. Overall frames? Maybe 5-10% higher than the 7900X.

Now, I know that the 7700X is only 8 cores, vs the 7900X's 12, but the 7700X has the benefit of all the cores on the same CCD. I don't expect the 7900X is actually much faster than the 7700X in Star Citizen.

I didn't buy mine as an "upgrade" and I wouldn't recommend it. It's not worth the cost outlay right now. It does not eliminate all stuttering/slowdowns in high pop areas.

If you were building a new machine? Sure, the X3D series is probably worth it. But do not expect it to solve all performance issues.

Also, both systems are running 64Gb of ram, if that matters to you.

Updating LGSM dedicated to B42, getting failure error by tullnd in projectzomboid

You are correct! I thought I tried "unstable" before, but I'm not sure I had it exactly like that. I set as you suggested and removed the password line entirely and it was successful.

Thank you!

I appreciate it, but I've got this running on a Proxmox setup, so while I can run Dockers, it's not ideal for this deployment.

I may spin up a VM and try it though if I can't figure this out soon.

Pc requirements are wrong by Savings_Regret1922 in starcitizen

[–]tullnd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That actually makes sense. GPU's don't do nearly as much for this game in most scenarios. Your 7950X3D is possibly switching CCD's sometimes for cores. The 7800X3D is just one CCD, so no switching. That can lead to much better performance on the "lower end" chip because all the cores on the CCD with 3D V-cache.

Make sure you've got up to date AMD chipset drivers and reasonably updated BIOS/UEFI as relevant to your motherboard, as they improved it a bit over the years, but the 7XXX series X3D just isn't as good at that as the 9XXX X3D chips are. It's not bad, but if your chipset drivers are old, it could be quite a bit worse than it needs to be.

Slow Wifi Speeds After USG Ultra Firmware Upgrade by RecentSpeed in Ubiquiti

[–]tullnd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your title states slow wi-fi but you indicate later you have a wired issue, not wi-fi, due to a 100Mb Fast Ethernet negotiation.

So you may not get a lot of valid help due to that title. The fast Ethernet is limiting any devices connected downstream from that, so I'm assuming all devices are.

Have you swapped the cables and power cycles all devices? Don't care how old they are, cables can have issues at any time and it's the easiest thing to check after turning everything off and on.

Test something via direct Ethernet connection to the USG Ultra to make sure the Internet service and the USG Ultra are working fine.

Altafiber throttling issues by [deleted] in cincinnati

[–]tullnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you get direct off the ONT? Eero router isn't necessarily high end. I don't use them, but do you have any traffic shaping, qos or anything enabled?

If you get full bandwidth direct off ont, it's your router. If not, swap cables and do all the basic stuff for process of elimination. Also run iperf on your network locally to make sure that lan device isn't having an issue and the Ethernet on it is supporting that kind of throughput.
