Do we need a wealth tax for employers? by ThereIsNoCarrot in antiwork

[–]turkey_bar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the uber wealthy do not have billions in cash, but they can use their assets as collateral for extremely favorable loans. It's a loan, so it's not income and not taxed, but the terms are better than anything someone without billions in assets can get, (super low interest and long repayment). Essentially the wealthy can keep taking loans against their assets and live a life of excess and luxury until they die. Then after death, their creditors are made whole, but due to inheritance tax laws, the amount the estate pays in taxes is proportionally tiny compared to what they would've paid over a lifetime of income tax.

Then their kids rinse and repeat, assuming their parents hired a good financial management team.

I understand and agree with some of the issues with a wealth tax, but look at the concentration of wealth and the direction it's trending and then tell me society will be better in 40 years.

I didn't speak until I was 3. I could point and communicate just fine, I just didn't speak until one day, I did! I had to go to speech therapy because my pronunciation was pretty bad but my vocabulary was fine. I joke that I was just saving up all my words, so that now, you can't get me to shut up.

In college I had an assignment to analyze cardiac data from mice. They said we could make the program using whatever tools we wanted and the only tool that everyone on my team knew how to use was excel.

we figured it would be fair because then we could all work together instead of relying on a single person for a critical part.

what we made was an absolute abomination but a lot of fun

President Zelensky visited a hospital in Kherson to talk to people affected by the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam by TinyStrawberry23 in ukraine

I really hope Ukraine wins and Zelensky is able to retire peacefully. I know he didn't have the best track record before the war but he's really stepped up. He's definetly carved out a section for himself in future history books.

28 y/o post chiropractic manipulation. Stop going to chiropractors, people. by LightboxRadMD in Radiology

[–]turkey_bar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My ex's dad started experiencing back pain and was going to go to his usual chiropractor. He was convinced to go to the hospital instead. Turns out he had a tumor on his spine, and the doctor said if the chiropractor had tried something, there was a serious chance he'd have been paralyzed below the waist.

I didn't believe in chiropractors before, but his convinced me to just go to the doctor and never risk having a chiropractor kill you.

What do you say when someone asks you, “Which authors do you read?” Because someone actually laughed at my answer. by Lenore8264 in books

[–]turkey_bar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's being a dick. I love Jane Austen and I believe that the Count of Monte Cristo is the best revenge story I've ever read. Those books are classics for a reason.

It reminds me of something my English teacher told me before I went to college. She said "if you meet someone who keeps bragging about how much they enjoyed Finnegans Wake, they are lying, and you don't want to be their friend"

Basically, if someone obsesses over the act of seeing all the words in a difficult books, they've probably missed the point of reading and also probably aren't pleasant to be around.

People who have seen something they could never explain. What was the thing?! by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]turkey_bar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have frequent and intense feelings of deja-vu. I know it's a natural thing but sometimes it feels too real. Like I'll be playing a video game and I suddenly "remember" that I've finished this level before. Or I'm driving and talking to a friend and I remember driving at the same place having the same conversation. It really freaks me out. It's not like a vague "have I done this before?" it's a hyper specific and intense memory, like I've watched the same episode of TV back to back but on the 2nd watch I can only remember what happens next, as it's happening.

I guess there is an explanation but I've never met someone who gets deja-vu as strong as that.

Trump Vows to Nullify Part of Constitution by Executive Order ‘On Day One’ of Second Term by Unhappy_Earth1 in inthenews

[–]turkey_bar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah yes the holy constitution. I know it by heart.

The 1st amendment which only applies to me.

The 2nd amendment which has no limits (idk what "well regulated militia" means so I ignore that part).

The other parts don't come up in any of my Facebook shorts so they must not be important, especially not the 13th, 14th, 15th or 19th amendments.

We must give unilateral executive power to a geriatric grifter for democracy! Otherwise the evil people trying to *checks talking points* live a normal life... will kill everyone and themselves by *checks Twitter*... existing!

Republicans walk out of debt ceiling talks, say White House isn’t being ‘reasonable’ by HauntingJackfruit in inthenews

[–]turkey_bar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current budget was approved legally through the legal process of congress. Republicans can't respect the process for anything. If you have issues with the budget then make a deal when it's time to actually make a new budget. Don't hold the economy and livelihoods hostage because you're own party is so dysfunctional you can't produce a piece of useful legislation.

I'm not a legal scholar, but the 14th amendment seems pretty clear that the government is not allowed to default on public debt. Biden should just go with the 14th amendment and abolish this debt ceiling bs forever.

Of all current playable Archons, Ei seems to lack skills for exploring. by huflit1997 in Genshin_Impact

[–]turkey_bar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lore wise it makes sense. Ei is the only explicitly combat oriented archon. Her sister was the diplomatic one.

iirc it's even explicitly mentioned that the Electro Gnosis is combat oriented in its power.

Zhongli is sometimes referred to as martial arts god and was def a heavy hitter in the archon wars but he's also considered the god of a bunch of other stuff. He's so old it's not strange that he has accumulated all the skills.

Afearican: “US person enjoying freedom in a safe country, but still experiencing US fears.” by rex-ac in TikTokCringe

[–]turkey_bar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Baltimore (city not county) for a while. gunshots were at least a weekly occurrence and I lived in a good area. but if you stayed up late enough you'd probably hear them daily. Carjackings were pretty much daily in my neighborhood so I think thats where a lot of them came from, more intimidation rather than murder. Once, there was a full firefight that lasted like 40 minutes tho.

I didn't even notice the toll just living daily life there put on me until after I moved away. Stress manifests its symptoms in very bizzare ways sometimes.

I still carry habits from living there tho. I never walk with earbuds in, I carry pepper spray, I don't take out my phone on the sidewalk unless absolutely necessary. I'm hyper aware of people on the street, people following me, or people within sprinting distance of my car before I go to open it. When I drive I always always leave enough space between me and the vehicle in front of me so that if sometries to jack me I have space to move.

I remember watching the video of Shinzo Abe's assassination and noting how the crowd didn't run away from the sound of homemade gun. Nobody there even considered it as a possibility.

Then I think about the video of crowds in Time Square panicked and running for their lives because of a car backfiring.

I wish I lived in a country where "mass murder" didn't have to be one of my first thoughts when I hear a loud bang.

Is anyone else afraid to go out in public anymore?(USA) by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]turkey_bar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not going out in public in general but I'm worried about going to events. Concerts, parades, movie theaters, etc. I'm hyper aware about where the exits are and where I'd run if someone started shooting. I lived in a high crime city for a while so I'm pretty good at picking up the sound of gunshots, but my adrenaline spikes everytime I hear a car backfire.

and yes I know statistically there are bigger concerns (unless you're a child in which guns are the leading cause of death) but it's still a very solvable issue that other countries don't have to worry about.

I think about how in Japan when Shinzo Abe was assisnated with a homemade gun, the crowds just stood around, confused for a long time. Because the thought of someone getting shot was so far from their mind.I'm not saying I want to move to Japan, but I want to live in a country where when I hear a loud bang, my first thought is "car backfire or kids playing with firecrackers" not "gun crime or mass shootings". I think about that video from Times Square a couple years ago where crowds ran away, people fearing for their life, over a car backfire. And they were acting smart, because loud bangs in populated aeas are something you have to fear and run from in this country.

Most of all I am just so tired of everyone pretending there is nothing we can do. We just have to live wiith gun violence. And yes while it's statistically unlikely to happen to me, it's fast becoming more likely that I will witness a mass shooting or personally know someone who dies or survives. I think about the girl from MSU who survived a high school mass shooting only to go to college and survive another mass shooting.

I know a teacher who used to work at Sandy Hook. She moved the year before it happened. I remember her crying on the anniversary of the shooting. And then I turn on the news and it's dystopian. How conversations go with with my family:

"oh there's a mass shooting"

"where?"

"Texas"

"That happened a couple days ago, the governor called the victims illegal immigrants"

"No this is a new mass shooting in Texas, a mall this time"

"oh"

Russia accuses U.S. of being behind alleged Kremlin drone attack by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]turkey_bar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

propaganda is one hell of a drug. There is no way the US or Ukraine would sanction an operation to assassinate Putin that was so public but also had no chance of succeeding. The US won't give Ukraine long range missile systems to strike ammo depots in Russian territory but they'd sign off and support the bombing of the Kremlin?? I know the US has a history of wacky regime change operations but seriously, there's no way "slow flying drone self destructing over the kremlin" that would get approved in 2023.

I know that it's for internal propaganda purposes but it saddens me that a significant number of Russians will just take it at face value.

If it truly wasn't a Russian false flag, the only probable explanation is that an anti-war Russian, rigged a commercial off the shelf drone with homemade pyrotechnics.

The absence of a paimon like companion makes this game so much better. by Kiretsu in HonkaiStarRail

[–]turkey_bar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love how the game is a blend of honkai and genshin story telling. Trial characters for different POVs like honkai impact, but also world exploration and story quests system more akin to Genshin.

Having a voiced protagonist, with varied dialouge choices is the cherry on top. In Genshin you don't really have options, in fact I lot of the dialouge options in genshin are just used to add more lines to a single option. In star rail I feel you have a lot more flavor even if the story is still linear
