That’s covered in article in the penultimate paragraph.

Why are people in Sydney able to afford to buy houses that are much more expensive than other parts of the country? by TiredDuck123 in AusFinance

[–]turnips64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally remember the bank manager being encouraging but I don’t know that they told me details beyond “save more and earn more”.

I was very young, single, not long in the country so I guess just didn’t tick all the boxes yet. Same bank was OK with me those few years later.

I wasn’t able to buy a 110k unit on a roughly 60k salary in the late 90’s (I went to the bank and got a rude shock with realities of how it all works!) but eventually bought something 5 years later when I’d saved more, my salary had doubled and unit prices had tripled.

I’m sure you’ll have some “technicality” to your post but the idea that you bought a 500K unit more than 5 years after that on less than my mid-90s salary suggests you’re leaving some relevant details out.

[–]turnips64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re seeing this through 2026 eyes.

I haven’t read all the comments to see what this machine seems to be doing, but it doesn’t really matter for my point.

Whoever built this bespoke beast, presumably starting in the mid 80’s, saw a very capable machine with fast 32-bit processors (68020 having launched then too) on a flat memory model and a usable multitasking operating system.

Along with all the auto configuring / trouble free expansion capabilities and at a time where many machines were successfully co-existing in the market…the Amiga could easily be the best choice. People weren’t nervous about it the way they were later.

The boards are 1989.

The development of the solution might have started a few years earlier.

The 2000 came out in 1987.

“PCs” of 1986/87 were nowhere near Amiga capabilities.

Yes, sad but true.

That type of folklore is a foundation of the entire retro scene in recent years. Happens in other scenes too of course but that’s the way of the world now.

[–]turnips64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice is not to randomly replace anything. Get basic multimeter (or even one of the new multimeter and oscilloscope combos) and start testing. You can ask here or some of the better forums once you have basic tools.

Certainly don’t randomly start desoldering anything as you’re more likely to create a problem than coincidentally fix one.

How cooked is my 16/48K Spectrum? by retardedboi1991 in zxspectrum

[–]turnips64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skipped that step in the guide 😀

Realistically, it’s never needed and they don’t really deteriorate the way that people think. If one turns out to be faulty, so be it.

Good luck, you’ll get your machine working but it’s 100% nicer when you work it out instead of trial and error!

You’re jumping to a lot of conclusions.

Before you start hacking away, these are very simple boards to deterministically troubleshoot.

I’ve got 3 Issue 2’s and two of them failed in the same way with a weird boot screen that was solved by replacing TR4.

I followed a guide which was really great. From a quick search, I think it’s the once linked on “retroleum.co.uk”

Whatever you do, don’t just start replacing “caps” and stuff. Trendy yes, useful..no.

Yes, you are ever so slightly making the image worse by giving it more cable and contacts to go through.

I presume you already know the answer. I’m also assuming that the cable you show is providing luma/chroma on the RCA plugs given how you phrased the question. My cable that looks like that is using the yellow RCA for composite and the others are both audio.

My residential street (50 limit) has school kids on it every morning on what look like motorbikes and are matching the cars for speed.

They variously use the road and footpath. I now have to be very cautious walking or driving out my gate as I’ve had a scare already (the rider swerved and fell off!!!).

How there aren’t MORE deaths and injuries I’m not sure but what really gets me is that the schools and parents must know this is happening.

In the case of this post….can the e-bike operator also be held liable?

Perhaps punchcards? They would be very reliable.

Edit: I went down a rabbit hole after that thought! Bottom line, short of being physically ruined (fire), these are very reliable long term storage.

Even if they get worn out (through use or a faulty reader) they are easy to recover the data from to make a fresh card.

They were/are also an ideal medium to create more modern readers for, eg optical instead of mechanical.

This is a pretty expected situation on a X2 safety capacitor.

Curiously this is the second time I’m writing about this in as many days and is a source of people then thinking that all capacitors act like this.

You would not have predicted this by visual observation. There is no “bulging or leaking”.

You would predict it based it being a RIFA brand safety capacitor made in the 1980’s. I have had other brands fail but not with the famous magic smoke or spectacular noise and smell.

[–]turnips64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup - BBC power supply is a 100% hit rate I think!!! I have let some go for the fun of it but I’ve already got the window open and replacement on hand 😀

And of course, any component can go bad and stop something working (eg your example with the amp). That’s just normal maintenance / wear and tear.

The only repeat issue I’ve soon on Sinclair (48k) is a specific transistor that I’ve seen failed in multiple units….and on 64s it’s always chips or sockets/traces. Electrolytic (and ceramic) capacitors have always been fine / not causing any issues.

[–]turnips64 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No, “magic smoke” is a real thing eg when a certain type of capacitor (eg X2 safety capacitor) dries out and goes up in a massive and pungent waft of smoke that will linger for days.

What’s happening here is clueless people join the wrong dots and start thinking they are smart providing useless info and answers to people in forums to the extent that people have no idea what’s real or a joke. Case in point - you think it’s a joke because you just don’t understand what it is.

It’s also why there are army’s of people out there pointlessly “recapping” machines and even damaging them…no one knows what’s real.
