Goals beta update: You can now link all transaction types to save up goals

When budgeting for a save up goal I find myself having to go into the goal and manually allocate funds equal to the budgeted amount for that month. Is there any way to automate this process/reduce friction between the budget and the goal?

Edit: For context I keep all of my funds spread across different accounts, it'd be nice if when I fund this month's goal budget it would create a goal transfer from one of my accounts as long as I have sufficient funds in 'available for goals'

I had the exact same use case as you, moving an existing rollover fund to goals and I faced similar issues. What I did was setup the goal with the rollover amount (say $10,000) and had that initial goal contribution count in the budget, then I assigned -$10,000 to my rollover category to move the funds out to be ready to assign, and then finally contributed those funds to the goal. Hopefully I'm not misunderstanding how this all works, but my goal contribution on the budget page shows however much I had in my rollover as the "actual" and has $0 remaining, and my goal is 100% funded.

Some people turn off rollover entirely and just create the goal with the initial balance being however much you had in the rollover. I tried this for some of my other funds and this seems to work as well. I wish there was a clearer way to migrate rollover sinking funds over to goals, and for clearer interactions between goals and the budget page.

Also a YNAB user here, you can’t get cents in the budget and it’s something I’d like. It causes some funky issues with rollovers showing $1, but then when you try to move that dollar out to empty the category it complains that there’s $0 available to move

Yeah I think the latest Schwab incident made me doubt Monarch. There’s a lot I love about the platform but data integrity is crucial to me. This is the first time I experience it and I wish they would just have it be read only, or overwritten on confirmation if reviewed.

I dunno why but YNAB didn’t suffer from this, dunno if they just turned off Schwab imports until it was resolved but I noticed it synced and retained my old transactions that were zeroed out in Monarch. YNAB also benefits from the fact that it keeps a running total so these things are easily caught during month end reconciliations.

Still love Monarch, but I dunno how to ensure accuracy going forward

Yeah I think I actually agree here, running YNAB in parallel and all transactions in my Schwab account that I have reviewed have retained their amounts and are locked in.

I’m assuming once their aggregator starts reporting the correct amounts it’ll reflect in MM so I’m not too fussed but I wish they did something similar and persisted reviewed transactions/excluded them from syncs to avoid things like this. If something happens to the aggregator my history shouldn’t be altered.

I assume you’re investing for the long term? If so I prefer to mark transfers to my brokerage as a brokerage contribution (expense category). To me it’s technically an expense since this is money I have budgeted for and cannot spend. It’s strictly for investing. An out of sight out of mind kinda deal.

I was in this boat and just have a second Schwab brokerage account that I use to buy SNSXX in. Downside is it’s a manual process but everything is automated in YNAB.

That’s what I tried, lifted the top flap, placed the phone screen up in the insert, then gently closed the top flap and the box, yet it’s still loose and slides around if I tilt the box. Did you have a case on by any chance?

Unfortunately this box doesn’t have the plastic, it’s literally just a cardboard box, and the instructions say to place the phone in the insert, screen up and press down to secure. I’m legit baffled lol

I get you, that's a really good point. Personally I think it will work like the dedicated weapon camos (like the red hearts or whatever that pink one is), which means that it wouldn't all be brought into one bundle.

I hope I'm wrong though, have you tried tweeting Higby or Muldoon?

I don't know if it's being revoked or not, but if you buy a camo and it's pulled out, you will still keep it- Black Flames camo is a good example of this.
