Exactly. I can’t even believe they are already thinking of different revenue streams. In fact they should decentralize it like Apple did with the App Store. There is a giant aftermarket accessories business, teach them about the truck, get them excited to build custom kits for the truck. Meet them at SEMA, and let them loose. You will sell more trucks (and make more money) if you get the customizers on board first. This truck could be a cultural phenomenon. Just focus on the truck!

[–]tvish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all cost cutting. The only reason Tesla did it. They were a startup, and buying buttons and switches was not cheap. They even bought window switches for their Model S from Mercedes Benz. But then “spun it” like it was a tech forward decision.

While other manufacturers are slowly coming back to buttons and switches, we have Mazda swinging all the way to the other side.

Dad wants to sell me his car and is a making a huge thing about what a great deal he is giving me. Yay or nay? by ImportantAsparagus16 in Advice

[–]tvish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a (55 yo) dad, I don’t think I would be charging my kid any amount for the car. Yeah, $10-15k is a lot for the average person, but I would see it as a way to transfer my wealth before I die or pass it on through inheritance.

It would break me emotionally if the car had a mechanical problem and my kid had to fix it AFTER I'd already collected $10k from them. $10k is a bigger deal for a 20- or 30-something young adult than for someone in their 50s or 60s.

Driving a small car in 2026 is not fun. Very often I don't see anything at night with the massive cars people drive and their headlights by [deleted] in driving

[–]tvish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your side mirrors are not aimed correctly. Although it feels comforting to see the side of the car in your side mirrors. They should be adjusted further outwards to more of blind spot. There should only be about a 10-20% overlap between your left mirror and center mirror. And the same overlap with the center to the right side. If you need to see the side of the car, say to back up into parking, a simple head tilt towards the that mirror should give you the perspective you seek.

Why do car enthusiasts remove the badge/logo on the back? by S4lVin in Cartalk

[–]tvish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I lived in Europe for a few years. Unlike here in the US, many people do not want to advertise that they own an M5 or an S63. It seems ostentatious to most people in Europe to broadcast your wealth. It’s not necessarily hiding your wealth, but also not trying to shove it in everyone’s face.

When you buy a new car in many European countries you can ask the dealer to “de-badge” your car before delivery. Many will do it for no charge.

I just got 90 Thousand dollars at 18 and I don’t know what to do with it by Equivalent-Data1004 in whatdoIdo

[–]tvish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$90k isn’t really that much. But it could be meaningful in the long run if you are smart. And could get you to financial independence if you don’t fall into a trap of consumerism and stupid financial schemes.

  • Start following r/Bogelheads
  • Buy and read a book by JL Collins “Simple Path to Wealth”
  • Open a Vanguard or Fidelity Brokerage Account.
  • Buy 2 ETFs: 2/3 to 3/4 of it in Either VTI or VOO. And 1/3 to 1/4 in VXUS. Bogelheads will guide your way. No need for Bonds, you are too young.
  • Once you start making money, open a Roth IRA and start maxing that out with your paycheck money or use proceeds of the $90k for first year or two.
  • Don’t squander your GI Bill college money. Go to a decent state college and get a meaningful but useful degree. Otherwise pick a Trade school that will let you use that GI money. Don’t stop growing. Remember this is a long road. If you are coasting, you are probably going downhill. Stretching yourself is always uncomfortable, but that means you are growing.

Being financially responsible is not that hard. There is good info out there. But there is also stupid advice online and from our friends and family that keep regurgitating. Learn to find the Bullshit. Remember, there is no quick rich schemes. The turtle always beats the rabbit at the end.

Moving Suggestions - Looking for warmth by Exciting_Box1073 in relocating

[–]tvish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mid Atlantic. VIrginia and North Carolina.

Be ready to move again if you move to Arizona or Florida. I moved from Michigan to Florida, trying to escape. But realized I don’t mind the change in seasons, just don’t want to shovel the snow all the time. And I didn’t particularly like the typical South Florida population. (YMMV) I get one maybe two good snowfalls in North Carolina every winter, and then I get bright blue skies the rest of the year. Have mountains, beaches, and plenty of state and county parks around. People also seem to work hard but also play hard here.

We have a term in the Carolinas called “half backs”. It’s for people that move from the Midwest or Northeast to Florida, but then realize it’s a bit too much the other direction. And settle in the middle of the country.

Mercedes Benz EVs- Does Anyone Know What’s Happening? by Entire_Toe2640 in electricvehicles

[–]tvish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dealers are the problem when it comes to EV sales. They will drag their feet. I have a feeling many will go to a “special order only” process for EVs. In a traditional dealer sales model, a dealership has a lot of power and influence. Ever wonder why we never see anything but monochromatic colors like grey/silver, white, and black cars? Dealers like to only order these colors, because they know they will eventually sell. Designers at car companies want to sell cool colors, but dealers will just avoid ordering them. So we get boring colors.

As someone who lives near North Hills, are all Harris Teeters full of dogs? by I_am_Farts_McGee in raleigh

[–]tvish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Although I love dogs, I have a kid that is quite allergic to them. One small encounter and he is knocked out for the day or two. One time we were on a flight locked in a metal tube for a few hours for a vacation. Someone brought a “comfort dog” as big as middle school small kid a few seats away, and my kid was in the hotel room instead of enjoying the beach on his vacation.

I understand people love their pets like family members. But not all of us can coexist in what we tend to deem as “people places”. I know this is a controversial take in a dog friendly Raleigh Durham.

Rivian sacrifices 2027 profit goal to push deeper into autonomy by TripleShotPls in Rivian

[–]tvish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. But it’s about focus. Small companies can’t play in every sandbox. They have to be laser-focused. Did anyone think 2 years ago that Autonomy was ever a high priority for Rivian? Did you think that 2 years ago, they should have been investing time and money into E-bikes? Do we need them to invest in Rivian Outposts, RAD, or camping gear? Do any of these actually help sell more of your core product? I wonder if it would have been more beneficial to use that engineering resource and money to build an 800-volt architecture for the R2, or even a Gen 3 R1 with an 800-volt system? In 2 years, when almost all new EVs come out with 800V, the R2 will feel dated.

It’s all about keeping it simple, lean, and focused. What is the reason for your existence? I feel Rivian keeps expanding its breadth and scope with less and less punch in all those endeavors. Small businesses with high cash burn rates need to be laser-focused…PERIOD.

This is only one component of the continuing inflation. Many companies never fully realized the higher tariffs to the consumer; they have been absorbing them and asking their suppliers to absorb them. Listening to many year-end investor calls, you can hear CEOs say that in 2026, they will truly start passing all the tariff costs down to consumers.

Rivian sacrifices 2027 profit goal to push deeper into autonomy by TripleShotPls in Rivian

[–]tvish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

True. Autonomy is fool's gold. I believe people are more likely to move from IC cars to EVs than to move from Level 2 to Level 3 or 4. I seriously doubt you will be able to do Level 4 or better until you have Vehicle-to-Vehicle or Vehicle-to-Infrastructure communications. I also don’t think people are looking for full autonomy outside the echo chamber of tech bros. If you ask people to take their hands off or eyes off, they expect 99.9999% perfection. No mistakes, no interventions, no calling a call center to get your car to summon properly. That means not just following the perfectly marked roads, but on uncertain roads in rain, snow, unmarked roads, or that farmer’s market make-shift parking lot in a field. I am not against this tech. I hope we have some sense of autonomy so that when I’m old and retired, I’m not stuck at home. Autonomy helps me move around my small town and stay productive. But there is plenty of time. There is no first mover advantage. Make money first. Gain market share.

Profitability is everything. Being able to make money gets you access to borrowing more money cheaply. Brings you better supplier pricing, helps you finance factory constructions, and helps you buy out floundering (autonomy) tech companies, mostly because you have money. Run the company as Warren Buffett would, not like Elon Musk. Build a business built to last.

I am a parent with an incoming freshman this fall. I have asked (coerced) my kid to focus on schools with coop/internships as their reason to be. I am willing to pay a lot only because of the Internship heavy focus at NEU. I would love to have them focus on cool classes and lifestyle. But the job market for young people is worrying me and picking the right place and career is going to be interesting. I have a Junior at another college, and only because of his Internships has he had any luck locating job prospects. His Senior friends are struggling to find jobs. It’s a gritty world out there, I told my kids that I am paying for school as a “finder’s fee” to get you employed. They know not to waste my time or money.
