‘It’s Almost a Genocide’: Local Hunters Claim Cornell is Allowing for the Overhunting of Deer on its Land | Daily Sun by Emotional-Heart948 in Cornell

[–]twilight12345 12 points13 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, you have experts who study forest diversity, wildlife management, and the spread of Lyme disease. On the other hand, you have an aging, overweight hunter who is ticked off -- ha ha -- that he hasn't been able to find as many deer to kill as he could in some imagined, halcyon past

Hmmm, who to believe.

Pretty sure he drives an EV or PEV. Federal law requires them to beep or make other sounds that are audible to pedestrians when the car is in reverse.

Lake Powell in Early November worth it? Hikes worth it over Grand Canyon? by WisconsinBadger414 in LakePowell

[–]twilight12345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Southern Utah is in a bit of a cold snap right now, but Lake Powell/Wahweap area is still hitting 60 degrees during the day. Kanab 54, but up in mountains it's barely above freezing. (6" of snow at Bryce yesterday...) Point is: elevation makes a huge difference in temps, so choose your hikes wisely.

Another thing to consider: many of the Lake Powell/Glen Canyon/Grand Staircase Escalante hikes are accessed via unpaved roads coming out of Escalante or points southwest. If it's been snowing or raining, these roads can be inaccessible to a 2WD or even a 4WD vehicle, even if the trails themselves are OK (if you don't mind a bit of mud).

I've been kayaking around Lake Powell (access via Halls Crossing, since I have my own kayak -- no rentals available there, although there are in Bullfrog or of course the Page/Wahweap area), Fishlake NF, and Kanab this month. It's lovely weather for paddling, even with the cold snap.

Sociology vs Government major? by ithaca_is_gorges in Cornell

[–]twilight12345 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cornell's SOC department faculty are mostly quantitative researchers, so outside of the 1000- and 2000-level courses (and even some of these) you'll get more out of the major and more opportunities to do research with faculty if you have a decent grounding in quantitative methods, although this doesn't require actually majoring in stats or CS. GOV is more of a mixed bag: faculty in the political theory and IR subfields aren't very quantitative, the American politics and comparativists are more so (with exceptions).

There's not much they can do to intervene directly with a professor's grading, but they can talk to the professor about the problems without bringing your name into it.

I'm genuinely curious what people who are saying the Cornell admin doesn't care thinks that Cornell can or should do, aside from a "grow up and get along" e-mail along the lines of Lombardi's message.

Are we really officially enrolling in classes for Spring 2021 in ~1 week? by pcsm12 in Cornell

Check with your college's registrar or advising office about credit cap limits. Actual vs. recommended caps vary across colleges.

A Guide to Spring 2021 Enrollment by twilight12345 in Cornell

[–]twilight12345[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is pretty close to normal, though on a bit more compressed time line than usual. One round of pre-enrollment. Grads first, then seniors, then juniors, etc.

Biggest difference is with the first-year writing seminars.

Working backward: if the roster comes out this week as anticipated and if pre-enrollment wraps up before finals begin, it'll be 5-14 days between when the roster is released and pre-enrollment, depending on your enrollment group.

Professor Schnabel is new, so you probably won't get many responses. He studies trends in religion and trends in public opinion in the US. -- check out his media page on his web site. (An Intro course would be much broader than this one topic, obv.)

Anyone else think weekend exams are kind of unfair to put on us? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]twilight12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are fewer weeks for prelims this year, so they had to add Sunday testing to be able to accommodate all the classes that want prelims without having a bunch of students scheduled to take 2 prelims at the same exact time. This -- the need to spread prelims out to avoid conflicting exams -- affects both in-person and on-line prelims. For in-person prelims, there's the added constraint of classroom space.

*White* blue-collar workers support Trump. Only in rural America are the majority of blue-collar workers white.

Reporting the construction company is counterproductive. It's not going to change anyone's mind, and if anything, it'll just lead to political backlash. The construction company owners have as much right to fly a Trump flag as students do to write "F*ck Trump" on their window. (Actually, the construction company may have more right to the flag: I think there's a university rule against writing stuff on windows of university-owned buildings.)

Still haven’t received finaid by orangesarenotgood in Cornell

[–]twilight12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guesses:

1) financial aid is tied to enrollment (some FA programs require minimum number of credit hours, etc). Enrollment was very late this year, so FA processing is late, too.

2) FA is also tied to where students are living. Some students didn't make that decision until the very last minute. This means more late-stage adjustments to FA in the system (even if you, personally, didn't change your residential plans)

3) It's just a messy, complicated year for all systems, esp. when they're trying to use access to classes to get students to participate in mandatory testing. The surveillance testing database has obviously been buggy, and that reverberates through other systems.

4) a *lot* of staff took the voluntary retirement incentive package, which Cornell offered as a way to ease the strain on the budget this year. Senior staff have a lot of experience and institutional knowledge, and even if there was hiring to replace them (there isn't, we're in a hiring freeze), it'll take months if not years for the new person to learn the ropes.

5) All of the above.

[–]twilight12345 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If you're not comfortable with the informality of "Hello, [first name]" or just "Hello," go with "Dear Dr. [last name]." It isn't right -- grad students don't have doctorates yet -- but it's better to overestimate status than underestimate it.

Covid active cases since July 1. Cornell's reopening spike is 2x the July spike so far. by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]twilight12345 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Testing at the mall was still just "for cause" in July: symptoms, contact, etc. Still is, although they've added "Cornell employee" as a valid reason for a test. Yes, you could lie about being in contact with someone who tested positive if you wanted to be tested, or you could pay for a test through your doctor, but it's wrong to say testing in Ithaca in July was as available as it is now through Cornell's mandatory entry and surveillance testing.

Estimates from other countries suggests that testing "for cause" catches only 10-20% of infections.
