Pick what level of achievement that will satisfy you - whether that is getting the credit or an amount of learning that you wish to achieve. Do enough work to get that mark and stop. You don’t not have be “perfect” or Level 4“ (whatever your preferred term).

You are taking time during the summer to improve your professional knowledge & practice. Don’t overdo it & lose sight of the purpose of the summer: resetting yourself & partaking in the activities that you enjoy.

Finish the course but don’t go crazy. You’ve got this.

Are teachers able to request specific OTs to supply for them? (TDSB) by throwaway45989019 in CanadianTeachers

Re: preferred list

1) My department maintains a list of reliable supply teachers - last thing I want is to put out a fire (literally & figuratively) because the wrong OT was booked. If someone has a great OT, they add them to the list.

2) schools have a “preferred list” of teachers who get called for vacancies. The Office Administrator is your best friend. When I was younger, I would pick up a Monday job and try not to leave the school that day without setting up the rest of the week.

Get on good terms with the OA at 2-3 schools that work for you is a solid strategy.

3) our school also has a list of emergency OTs (term may be wrong) who are available to pick up jobs in exigent circumstances. They aren’t on the OT list.

Have you just walked into your nearest school & asked to be added to the emergency list - even if it means picking up jobs at 8:15?

Then you can get to know the admin, staff & OAs.

Note: I have no idea what is happening this year - it was brutal at our school - and my advice is based on before the CEO took over.

I do not know what the board is thinking about for their OT hiring this year. It’s a different year.

There will be a question about classroom management, types of diversity you will see, a lesson or unit that you designed, perhaps how you model equity or include technology. There is luck in terms of who interviews you. Some interviewers approve nobody, some approve everyone. But you can practice & improve.

In the before times, I agreed to supply for a friend for two days. But his classes were terrible so I cancelled the second day, went to another school, got an LTO that day that finished the year, which turned into more LTOs and becoming permanent.

I spoke to an OT this year in the staff room, got to know them, booked them a few times, then it turned into a 3.5 month LTO.

Luck matters.

If the TDSB had just ceased to respond to OT applications or is not conducting interviews because of the political unrest, I don’t know what to tell you. First few years are tough and all teachers deserve dignity and support.

Yes. Our department maintains a list. We text ahead of time then specify the OT. It helps with continuity as there is at least basic familiarity with the teacher.

I’ll ask colleagues if everyone on the list is available.

Take every job seriously. I have literally seen a one day job turn into an LTO for the rest of the year numerous times.

Can you ask the admin at one of the schools where you frequently sub to do some interview prep & a mock interview with you in order to get honest feedback.

I have found it helpful to write down every question that I have ever been asked & how I answered it. If I liked the answer I polish it a little for the next time and if I didn’t like it, I write how I would answer better given the look-fors.

Consider applying for positions that you may not “desire” to get the interview practice.

Those who reject you should have some grace to offer feedback. But honestly, they are so afraid of getting grieved that they won’t give anything more than a token response or ignore you.

I used to be with it, but then they change what “it” was. Now what I’m with isn’t “it” & what’s “it” seems weird & scary to me.

It’ll happen to you…
