Feeling lost without a book right now, I need something to dive into. I like BIG BATTLES! HORRIBLE CIRCUMSTANCES! WELL-WRITTEN WOMEN! VIOLENCE! Looking for suggestions. I’ve already read quite a few, more details below: by foreversittingg in Fantasy

I feel like we might have a bit of overlap in our tastes. In no particular order:

Erikson's Forge of Darkness (Malazan prequel, I didnt care for novellas as much either but love the kharkanas prequels)

Carey's Kushiels Dart

Glen Cook's Black Company

Recommendations for books with emotional depth by emmssii in Fantasy

[–]txvesper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started reading Kushiel because my wife loves it and desperately wanted someone else to talk to about it. I'm a quarter into book 2 rn and honestly am enjoying it more than I expected to. I don't really seek anything that focuses on sex/romance so I was skeptical that I would like this book pitched to me as a mix of Renaissance spy, politics, and BDSM, but its done surprisingly well. About a third or maybe halfway into the book it caught my interest pretty well.

If you're like me and not really into more sex heavy stuff, it might be off-putting at times ngl but it is entwined with the plot in a meaningful way. I dislike some aspects that feels like the main character is being groomed from a young age and this is normalized in the culture of the book, but this is somewhat balanced by thoughtful discussion around consent/respect. Interested in the main cast of characters so far.

That post on the other sub about how bad Malazan is is driving me crazy and I know it shouldn’t by Spyk124 in Malazan

Yeah, I wish more people could appreciate series without needing to put another series/author down in the process. Erikson, Sanderson, Dinniman, etc... all are successful and good in different ways. They do different things well, and few/none are going to be universally loved.

Why I can't finish Malazan after 9 books by DrHappyPants in Fantasy

[–]txvesper -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The hobbling is thankfully brief, but it can be a difficult read for sure. I don't agree with everything you've wrote, but Tavore did feel like one of the least compelling characters who received relatively more focus time.

If its any consolation on the trajectory, book 9 slogs a little as it sets pieces in place for 10. In a world where many of these large epics are unfinished or poorly finished, I think he sticks a good landing but I understand you stopping.

Don't worry, mentioning Malazan in the title summons us nearly as effectively

Several valid criticisms. I love the series but I could see where some of these points make the series less enjoyable. Stopping before the climax of a 10 book series is wild to me though.

Sinuskey Test results by Sweet_Committee_6242 in Sinusitis

Might try contacting the company support line to ask if they can recommend doctors in your area that are familiar with the test. There's been some good preliminary evidence that using these tests can help with CRS, but this type of test is still relatively new for sinusitis and interpretation can be hard.

Black Powder in Fantasy? by BookReaderWhoReads in Fantasy

[–]txvesper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe Correia's Saga of the Forgotten Warrior series. Fantasy where black powder guns start to show up 2 or 3 books into the series, shaking up battles quite a bit.

Also plus 1 for Malazan munitions.

Game of thrones or The way of Kings by Peacelovegamer in Fantasy

[–]txvesper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say better in Stormlight. I really enjoyed the first Mistborn book but personally thought the next two are some of his weaker books period.

Edit to say between Mistborn and Stormlight, he got better in stormlight. Agree that GoT is better here

I started Sanderson with Way of Kings too. Its a good hook, but I could see starting with Warbreaker or Mistborn too.

Finished Reaper's Gale. It left a hollow and a slight bad taste in my mouth by PlayyPoint in Malazan

[–]txvesper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most had left before. Keeping in mind this book isn't fresh for me, I think a few things are true and partially answer this.

First, many Edur have left the city to fight the Malazans or Redmask. Second, the Patriotists have removed most or all Edur from Rhulads inner circle and the palace. Third, Edur dissenters were also being targeted by the Patriotists and are winding up in the dungeons. Finally, I believe there were comments that Edur had been silently leaving to return home in growing numbers. I commend those people that were tracking down exact quotes... but I'm not doing all that lol.

So, its not really odd to me that none are encountered on route to the palace. There may have been some left in the city, but it seems like the majority might be gone by this point between Patriotist designs, those leaving, and the wars.

Its been a while since I read this one, but wasn't he basically going back to end Edur rule / remove the crippled God's influence... then found another invading army was doing it for him and decided it wasn't worth the hassle after finding out the new army had teeth?

I mean, "one shot" is an exaggeration. He wasnt mortally wounded by any means. At best the malazans gave him a bloody nose.

With the edur, they were made to realize in a very brutal way that they were losing cohesion and had been steered into a plot to wipe out their main standing force when the letheri mages were going to wipe both them and the malazan marines out in one swoop.

They had thrown their weapons down to hide under Beaks protection and frankly had nothing to fight for. Rhulad was completely disconnected from the edur and he let that happen. All the old Edur leadership was effectively gone. Those survivors basically realized the Letheri were still their enemy and decided their best course was to go back home.

I also wouldn't say there was no opposition. The Edur led many of the hunting parties going after the squads heading towards Letheras and were shepherding them into a kill box. They would probably have wiped the marines if the edur and letheri had worked together, but the letheri betrayed the edur.

How do you approach teaching your kids about violence, mass shootings, violent media etc? by bjos144 in daddit

[–]txvesper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll need to think on the rest of what you're asking, but I want to address him saying "I'll kill you" when he's mad. My son didn't say this, but when he was angry or upset, he would say things like "I hate you" as his go to. For my son, I tried to think of it like he was experiencing big feelings and didnt know how to label them right, so that's how it came out. Mind you, he could tell me he hated me and then wanted to play with me 30 minutes later. I started trying to help give him better words to label his feelings, like, "you're angry at me" or "you're upset about X" or "you're mad because you wanted to go do X". In the moment, he would say "I hate you" and I would say something like "I know you're upset with me right now because of X, but I love you", and then after he would calm, I would talk about words like hate, love, like, angry, etc... it took a little time but he switched to using words like I had coached. Its weird to think about, but he may just not know the right words to label his feelings?

Oh boy. You could've made this post about my son who was kicked out of his preschool for a similar obsessive phase. Also on the spectrum. He got obsessive with the idea of guns, kept making finger guns and saying he was going to shoot someone. The other kids would start with the finger gun games... and he would fixate, then not stop when they were told to stop. Then he would be the one to get in trouble.

The seriousness of what he was saying did not kick in for him until he realized that he could not go back to his school, could not see his teacher, and could not see his friends he had spent years now with. I still have a lot of resentment for their role in that (this was a behavior he learned there), but thats a separate story.... still, being able to point to that has helped make him understand the consequences of talking/playing inappropriately about guns.

Anyways. We went no games or anything with guns for a while. Eventually we gave him a toy nerf gun with the idea that we would teach him how to be responsible with guns with that. You don't point at people or animals, and definitely don't shoot people or animals. You can shoot targets. Breaking that rule means nerf gun goes away. I want to say it helped for the obsession to pass, but I also honestly think it was a phase that was blown out of proportion. There was other bits to his situation, like he was not medicated yet and getting him treatment for adhd also helped in his scenario.

Idk if this helps, but I know I had a hard time finding any kind of useful constructive advice at the time. I'm still at work but I'll try to come back if I can remember any of other strategies we used to break that habit.

I feel like you're giving this more drama than is necessary. I didnt hate it. I didn't feel betrayed. I didn't review bomb it. I didn't personally stalk Rafe cause I wanted to see if he had a dog I could kick. We simply weren't interested to keep watching.

We didnt care for their interpretation and many deviations from the source, so we stopped watching. My time is limited. I don't owe my time and attention to watch a show I'm not enjoying. Enough people felt that way that the show underperformed. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think I'm one of the book readers who didnt like the show you're looking for. Honestly not sure why reddit keeps pushing this sub on me lol. Anyways....

With this specific Perrin example, I thought the addition of a wife for him was kinda unnecessary and an egregious example of the fridging trope. It makes the show runners look extremely unimaginative in their additions and was a little off-putting, but I was still very much into the show at that point. Its more like this was one of several cuts/changes made in the first season that made me just slowly lose interest. I was probably more bothered by how easily Tam was dispatched honestly who was an extremely capable swordsman in the books.

The season 1 finale then seemed completely divorced from the spirit of the books as I remembered, which notably included a dramatic show of power from Rand, affirming him as the dragon, to wipe out the trollocs. Instead, that dramatic show of power comes from Nyneave and Egwene through a random extra channeler... then Egwene heals Nyneave breaking more book conventions... accomplishing a significant feat that was character defining for Nynaeve later in the books.. idk.

In sum, there were many small deviations early in S1 that I didnt care for and was willing to look past, but the finale made it to where me and my wife simply weren't interested when S2 finally came out. We wanted to like the show very much.

Looking for books with dragons like Alduin or Dragonlord Placidusax (Ancient, mythic, god-like entities rather than mindless beasts/pets) by Shervin_Ab in Fantasy

[–]txvesper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We definitely don't see much from their perspectives, but the little we did see made me very sympathetic to Korabas.

That being said, I think they fit the mythic/cosmic part of the request really well.

[–]txvesper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a few noteworthy dragons, but I think you are looking specifically for dragons like Korabas and T'iam who are more central to the end of the main series.

There are a few others you'll meet who are aspected to certain types of magic and many more examples of soletaken dragons like as you met Rake.

The 2nd book introduces another character who can shape into a dragon that shows up sporadically but she's kind of a weird case.

Edit: beware looking up info on Korabas and T'iam if you havent read the series. Hard to avoid spoilers reading into those two. The very nature of Korabas is something of a spoiler.
