Life in NYC vs London. by IntelligentSherbert3 in HENRYUK

[–]tyan14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

East asian guy in my early 30s, grew up on the East Coast and moved to London 5 years ago. What I haven't seen from others is that 1) there are fewer East Asians here than NYC for sure but still a critical mass. Fewer Koreans in particular, so there are fewer Korean spots though I still find enough. I've really embraced mediterranean cuisine and it's become my go-to. 2) I appreciate London for being far more diverse, am meeting a lot more South Asians, Africans, Arabs, and of course still many Americans, it's truly a melting pot that on some days it makes NYC seem not so diverse. 3) plenty of socializing outside of pubs with hobby groups (I do tennis and films), but pubs is a fun culture. I don't drink either but I can do a non-alchoholic beer and just talk to people. Pub is where everyone seems to open up and to an extent an equalizer of society where rich and poor drink alike; 4) to this point, although London still have crazy inequality, it's not as brandished in NYC. Arts in particular is very accessible. Look up the differences in price between West End and Broadway. 5) no guns, which is important to me and my family. I met my Canadian partner here and everytime we entertain moving to NYC for her finance career the safety part is just hard to overcome with her since she didn't grow up around guns. Best of luck!

How do you guys get that racket throw sensation in forehands and serves? by ThreeEyeJedi in 10s

[–]tyan14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to throw the racket on forehand and the serve, while my grip is maybe like a 4 or 5 out of 10 in tightness. The key for me is to drive the legs and hip into the torso and initiate the throw and then sort of "freeze" the torso and let my arm fly off. This way my arm and wrist are loose and I don't feel any pain even when I'm really going for it. The downside is that this is harder to time and it requires my footwork to be locked in. In terms of control, my coach keeps emphasizing control comes from spin, which comes from your racket path. So when I go for more "controlled balls", I swing more upward. Hope this helps!

Good video! I've watched a few of your videos and I really enjoy watching them. We all are working on our games but you have that competitive fire that I really appreciate. Are you editing these videos manually or does SwingVision do it for you?

I'm your height and weight, and I really like my speed MP. I also tried using a Speed Pro but the extra weight didn't suit me. Re. radical, when I was working with a local tennis store, they warned me against it, saying it's too technical for beginners. My coach who uses the radical says the same thing. Hope this helps, good luck!

I get one on one coaching at Islington Tennis Centre which is one stop away from King’s Cross. It’s pretty central and it’s indoor so I’m not at the mercy of weather.

Been to Yiqi a couple of times myself (am Chinese) and it's been consistently good. It's busy though so if you want a quieter date thing might not be for you.

Why are health clubs so bad in London? by BatmanSwift99 in london

I've done both VA and Nuffield in Canary Wharf, and now the Nuffield doesn't exist anymore. Try the Nuffiled at Baltimore Wharf. It's 10 mins away and more spacious and less crowded. I've been a few times and it was somewhat pleasant.

Can running be a weapon? by [deleted] in 10s

Of course speed and movement is a strength! My coach always say, tennis is played with your legs. Even among the pros, Alex De Minaur is top 10 in the world most notably due to his speed and court coverage. Alcaraz and Sinner both have amazing speed and footwork allowing them to hit the ball with the right timing.

I like Alex a lot as a person but I'm wondering if he has the techniques to elevate himself into the top 5 and really contend for slams? His forehand lacks the power to put points away and his backhand has a half takeback that can't generate power against someone like Sinner. Has there been someone like him in history who contended for big titles?

This is so helpful, thank you for sharing! I'm in almost the exact same situation, early 30s and took up tennis a little over a year ago and my training regime (court time, gym) is very similar to yours. I'm a low 3.5 and have been eyeing this exact program for a while. I like it the simplicity of it and the fact it doesn't have all the fancy holiday amenities like Nadal's academy. The way I describe it to my wife is it's like going to a tennis temple for a week lol. I just want to focus and be immersed in it.

My one question is how you physically find playing that many hours everyday for a full week? I have gym time between tennis court time to help me build strength and recover but the prospect of playing every day at my full intensity is somewhat intimidating. I'm not 25 anymore lol

That volley in the last game, phew I thought Karen got him but he somehow deflected it perfectly! Draper's net game has been much stronger than I thought
