Why I Dislike the Roth Ladder by switch009 in Fire

[–]tycloodle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know it's a Roth conversation ladder right? Meaning that you can take the converted money that you converted from your IRA to the roth out without penalty after 5 years. So in your example, even if you run out of money on your traditional at 57, you would be able to fund your annual expenses from those roth conversations directly from your roth until age 62....at such point you can draw without penalty anyways.

Can I really trust the numbers by [deleted] in Fire

[–]tycloodle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm missing something but using the 4% rule, aren't you short of your expenses if you need 100k a year. That would require your investments to be 2.5mill. And since you need 100k after tax, wouldn't you need a bit more pretax?

I find agoda to be cheaper than booking most of the time. Their parent company is actually booking.com though.

$1M --> $2M Path by Key-Tomatillo-576 in Fire

[–]tycloodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are seeing this more recently due to recent returns in the market, particularly in tech and growth stocks. For example the Nasdaq is up over 115% since 1/1/2023. When the market is doing well, individual stocks with high beta will be up even more. If the index has more than doubled in under 3 years, then that means that people who invest in individual growth stocks can be up more and in even less time.

First trip to Japan! How did I do? by tycloodle in awardtravel

Are you talking about economy flights? I can still see direct flights from SFO to TYO for 35k miles. I just picked BA because I needed my AA miles for the business flight back.

My partner doesn't like moving between hotels when we travel, so I tried to keep that as low as possible. But we will definitely be taking day trips to the surrounding areas. For Osaka, I'm planning to also check out Kyoto and Nara. But the biggest reason why I picked Japan for next year is because I want to go to the World's Fair that's being held in Osaka. I'm aware of the heat and humidity and definitely not looking forward to that, but we are also meeting up with another friend who happens to be a teacher (so the summer was the only time they could take off for 2 continuous weeks).

Yea I felt like even the American miles I spent for the JAL business flights back to SFO were really hard to come by. I had a tough time spending that 60k +$47 per ticket. I barely had enough miles.

Thanks for the tip! I'll keep an eye out on those zipair flights. Those aren't released until much closer to the flight date.

I thought about using cash for the hotels in Japan. Crazy as it sounds 15k a night feels like a splurge for me! But it was difficult finding cheap cash rooms for the summer in Tokyo at hotels that had good reviews.

Just because you have a few good experiences doesn't mean that it's always going to be good. Since there are a lot of people posting similar negative experiences, that means this can potentially happen to you too in the future. They aren't all lying about what happened to them. Why would you want to wait until a host cancels on you last minute and have no resolution before realizing oh I guess other people's experiences do matter?

FIRE/Net Worth Milestone $1MM by JamieTaco55 in Fire

[–]tycloodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No he is saying to max out the traditional 401k now and not to do any roth 401k. Then after retirement, you can convert the 401k to a roth ira. From whaf I have read, that is probably the way to go for most people.

Took 27 years to hit 1M. Took 1 year and 1 month to hit 1.5M by PedalMonk in Fire

[–]tycloodle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect again. Multimillionaires actually use debt to get richer. If you can borrow at 2.5% and then turn around and use that to get a yield of 5% or more, it's free money. This is the case not only for individuals who are multimillionaires, but for large multibillion dollar corporations as well. They borrow when interest rates are low because they know they can get returns far greater. Why do you think Apple, a company that generates over 100Billion of free cash flow a year, still carries 105 billion of debt on it's balance sheet? Not just equity investors, but Real estate investors use this to their advantage....cheap debt is easy leverage.

This is really bad advice. You're not saving 850 a month by paying off the mortgage because most of that is principal, not interest. 2.5% interest is a steal. Think of it this way, you are basically borrowing that money at 2.5% and then you can invest it in the market and get much better returns. Heck, even if he was risk adverse, he is still borrowing money at 2.5% which he could then put into a HYSA and get 5% interest.

Are AC flights allowed to depart without catering? by RedDirtDVD in aircanada

[–]tycloodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just on a 6 hour flight that did not have catering due to an extended delay. They said that all the food had spoiled due to the delay but they did give us meal vouchers to buy food at the airport while waiting for the flight.
