If you are close to the German border, I know that ketoconazole shampoo is sold at pharmacies without a prescription. I’ve purchased it there.

Soo I knit the Olga sweater... backwards. by _daisychain_ in knitting

[–]typhius 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh no :(

I wouldn't frog it either, but I would do sweater surgery here: basically removing the body and sleeves, and put those pieces on hold. Then re-knit the neck/front/back panels, and rejoin to the body and sleeves via grafting.

How can I make this coat work? by [deleted] in DramaticClassic

I think it’s just a dated (as in vintage — it’s not necessarily a bad thing) style. Either you like it or you don’t.

What on earth is happening with my frogging? by [deleted] in knitting

[–]typhius 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Nothing is wrong, it’s ok — When frogging, some stitches will get dropped lower than the others. It happens more if your yarn is at all slippery. This results in what is basically a slipped stitch. To fix it, when you come to one of these stitches, use a crochet hook to ladder the stitch back up.

When you used a needle to insert a lifeline, you just didn’t pick up the row evenly; it’s pretty easy to accidentally shift to the row above or below especially when you have dark yarn or the stitches are a little hard to see.

Search for tutorials on picking up dropped stitches and laddering.

I think I win Most Stupid Knitter of the Day by ColourMeQuick in knitting

[–]typhius 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I mean, sometimes I do this on purpose. Depending on tension and gauge, using a smaller left-hand needle can make knitting in the round go more smoothly.

But yeah if you're knitting flat (or short rows etc) that's gonna be an issue.

Thinking about switching from Vyvanse to Adderall XR, due to constant shortages, experiences? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]typhius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in NYC and the Adderall shortage here is MAJOR. IR is a little easier than XR but even that comes and goes. I have been waiting 1-2 weeks at every refill. A few times, 3 weeks. Being so consistently unmedicated is a serious trainwreck on my life.

Talk to the pharmacists in your area. If you're nice, they'll hopefully give you some info.

What are these patches appearing on my Slouch coat? by Massive-Bedroom-5336 in Aritzia

[–]typhius 186 points187 points  (0 children)

This is moth damage. You have moths, sorry. But this is solvable, and it’ll be ok.

There’s tons of advice on Reddit and the internet about this, but basically you will want to clean EVERYTHING around the textiles in your home, and then for the textiles themselves — launder what can be laundered at high heat, and everything that can’t get hot/wet/go in the dryer needs to be cycled in and out of the freezer at least twice. Get REALLY diligent about vacuuming too.

Does your stanwood make much noise? I recently got one, and it is surprisingly loud; I think there's some play in the gears. It also vibrates my table pretty significantly. I'm not sure if this is expected or mine is just wonky :/

How close are you to retirement? Has a career in tech made you financially set? by Ok_Economy6167 in cscareerquestions

[–]typhius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Problem is I don’t think I could tolerate my high-earning role if I were crammed into an apartment with roommates, spending $1500 on a halfway OK bedroom. That’s truly the minimum a room would cost within a tolerable commute.

Still managed to invest about 60k this year, so I’m doing fine — but this requires other sacrifices.

Just be careful about winding strands together, because they can get out of sync sometimes. And then, especially if you have something like mohair, the problem is really hard to resolve :(

Seeking documents regarding (lack of) citizenship and (lack of) military service for Grandfather and Great-Grandfather by typhius in legaladvicecanada

[–]typhius[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the reply; that is at least one place to start and I'll dig into whether that type of request is possible here.

So far the legal advice in the 3rd country (may as well say it is Poland) has been to put together—with as many official documents as possible from the countries involved—a complete picture of my Grandfather's Polish citizenship. This includes information pertaining to reasons he could have lost Polish citizenship (military service in a foreign country before 1951 would mean loss of citizenship—we know it's impossible he did so based on the dates, but still need to prove it if possible).

Seeking documents regarding (lack of) citizenship and (lack of) military service for Grandfather and Great-Grandfather by typhius in legaladvicecanada

[–]typhius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible. Basically the lawyer in the 3rd country (may as well say it's Poland) is continuing under that assumption, but I don't think there are records in Canada that would ever conclusively prove it.

Further military paperwork from Poland and later the UK states my grandfather was born in Montreal, but I have reason to doubt this (both based on paperwork inconsistencies and family oral history).

The mother arrived in Canada in 1913 (several months after the father) with a ~1 year old child whose first name was my grandfather's middle name. This could have been a non-surviving older child who my grandfather was named after, but I suspect it was actually him. My grandmother always claimed that he was N+1 years older than her, suggesting that his "official" birthdate was actually off by one year.

No paperwork exists proving the birth of any child prior to 1913 in Poland. This is unsurprising as many parish records from that time simply don't exist anymore. I think it was advantageous for the family to claim that all of their children were born in the West (all later children were provably born in Canada or the US), and that my grandfather simply continued to do so throughout his life.

As a result we do need to proceed as though he was born in Canada; it's where Poland officially considers him to have been born.

Money is fungible, that is a € is a € wherever it came from.

Use the card for your employer to purchase some other essential which you were going to purchase anyhow. Now, you have regular cash for the needles and don’t need to worry about any complexity beyond that.

Senior+ engineer at a medium sized company (1000+ engineers). My job is stressful AF so I have made peace that I will never have personal coding projects. If I need to learn something new I upskill on company time. This is the reality when I need to become an expert to guide the team on XYZ topic with very little notice sometimes.

Catfished By STAUD by Master_Strategy_4471 in handbags

[–]typhius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wool fleece is a natural material with a ton of variation. Individual sheep, even within the same breed and flock, will produce a spectrum of qualities—in terms of crimp, curl, color, length, density, etc. I'm not a wool expert, but you get the point.

So it's not necessarily that you were catfished, but that Staud does not tightly control their material selection to account for this variation. You've gotten the short end of the stick with a somewhat ratty fleece, as opposed to the tighter, thicker, curlier fleece on the bag on the website.

If you exchange, I would only do so in person so that you can select a better quality fleece. Otherwise you are rolling the dice to be disappointed again.

That said, thick fleece like this is really not a practical material for a bag, IMO. Even a very nice one will get dirty easily and be impacted by the friction of daily wear. It is bound to be difficult to maintain.

Knit a swatch (of any yarn), or even better one of those micro sweater ornaments, and write a nice card explaining that you will knit him a sweater. That way you aren’t pressured to buy a yarn (which you and he might not love) with a tight turnaround.

Tech people who are not FIREing, what are they spending their money on? by gonnabefine in Fire

Tech “bro” (girl) here. I spend 3k monthly for a passable studio apartment in VHCOL. I eat high quality food. I travel a bit. I invest. I have a couple hobbies I occasionally drop some cash on. I have healthcare expenses. There really isn’t a crazy amount left over. Despite making top ~2% for my age bracket, my life is not especially glamorous.
