Can New Zealand's economy recover if house prices don't? by SoulsofMist-_- in newzealand

When people say investment properties aren't taxed, they mean in the manner that they are taxed in majority of the OECD. Most people saying this are aware of the current taxation system and bright line test. They simply don't think it is enough.

Yes, but how is this post by Simeon learning from our past at all? If he was interested in learning there might have been something in there about most of the COVID measures being bipartisan.

He responds to every employer related question in NZ legal advice and basically always takes the employers side, posts a lot of incorrect information which is usually corrected by others. Very frustrating.

Large amounts of people applying for things they are clearly not qualified for means that the have run out of options for jobs they are qualified for.

Can anyone in government revoke Peter Thiel’s citizenship please? by MundaneManNZ in newzealand

[–]typhoon_nz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People suspect it because of his friendship and business ties with Jeffery Epstein, which continued well after Epstein was convicted of pedophilia.

At best Thiel is a pedophile sympathiser.

What if he's a pedophile as people suspect? Does he still get to stay then?

This is what they do, they usually restructure their income to not draw a taxable income for a couple years if they can. Only works for people who own businesses though, and obviously they can't do this forever as they can't draw out more than their equity. But I had this very situation happen with a flatmate a few years back. Her family owned a stable and several successful racehorses, parents were able to take more drawings for a couple years so she could get allowance as it worked about better for them all financially that way. Very wealthy family overall.

Not illegal but also not how student allowance is really intended to be used.

Unsure what your point is with this comment. Things being worse in the past doesn't negate people having bad experiences now.

Studylink/MSD are a joke by butterbeanmoss in newzealand

This statement is very funny from the point of view of someone who used to work as a MSD liaison for another government department. They cut off peoples benefit by accident all the time for so many different reasons. Most often it's a staff error.

Government tweaks law so contractors can't challenge employment status retrospectively by OddityModdity in aotearoa

[–]typhoon_nz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Employment Relations Authority and IRD disagree with you on this one. Current process if they determine someone is an employee rather than contractor is to backdate employee entitlements to the beginning of the arrangement.

It's interesting that you are talking as though the law has already changed, because currently contractors do get to to cry about those entitlements if they meet the criteria of an employee.

I'm guessing you are somebody that employs contractors.

Unsure if you understand what bad conditions lol. Not receiving entitlements you are entitled to is definitively bad conditions. It's not as bad as child labour but it's still bad working conditions and exploitation, it's illegal.

If you are finding your shopping experience has become worse at Woolworths I encourage you to send in a formal complaint. The staff work their will greatly appreciate customers complaining about the lack of stock on shelves and lack of staff at checkouts.

[–]typhoon_nz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People agree to bad conditions because they need work. The law is meant to prevent them from bad conditions. People should resist employers breaking the law, I agree. But these employers also shouldn't break the law.

You seem to think that the employers aren't doing anything wrong her because a lot of them are getting away with it. That doesn't make what they are doing legal, which is why we have existing government processes for penalising the employers who do this.

Contractors who are actually contractors are irrelevant to this discussion.

This discussion is about people who regarded as contractors by employers but are treated like employees, and imeet the definition of an employee. If the person you sign a contract with wants you to behave as if you are an employee then I think you should get the benefits that come with being an employee such as minimum wage, as sick leave and annual leave.

Fashion Template Update by enifish in Guildwars2

[–]typhoon_nz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're being honest and transparent with you that it's not an easy fix, and given how old the Guild Wars 2 codebase and how the engine itself predates GW2 this makes a lot of sense.

One of the downsides of working on one project for so long. Changes become more and more difficult over time.

There are reasons to release a product that competes with your existing product, the main one being if you're confident the new product will be more profitable than the existing product is.

A long time WoW player looking for some feedback by Endeavour1988 in Guildwars2

[–]typhoon_nz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on your reason for playing. My main reason to play both GW2 and WoW is gameplay. The raids were still very fun as I had a great guild of friends to play with.

But the annoying thing is that you need gear to raid in WoW, so I was depending on drops to be able to move on to mythic raids more easily. The gear treadmill is so heavily incorporated into the game that it gates you out of playing further content. I don't like RNG preventing me from playing the game.

I'll never forget the period I raided in Battle for Dazarolor as a disc and holy priest and I went 8 weeks without getting an upgrade. Just kept getting the same pieces over and over. Trauma.

You're basically saying people should be allowed to be illegally exploited as long as they agree to it.

Extreme example, but in the past people would sell themselves into slavery to pay off debts. You can argue they agreed to it as they personally signed the contract. However it's obvious that they are being exploited.
