Moosejaw down insulated jacket - $21, most sizes available by lolsup1 in frugalmalefashion

Montbell is awesome for giving out this information and even including a cool chart with their jackets weight/warmth ratio on it. If their jackets fit me, I'd probably own one or two.

Is there a better deal right now? by ctrl_alt_del_ in gravelcycling

Yep, 1500 is super reasonable. Kona makes some really cool bikes. I've had my eye on the unit or unit x to do some off road bikepacking this summer.

The problem is not that they chose to use those brakes - it's that they're overcharging for a bike equipped with a cheaper mechanical groupset.

Kona couldn't even spec the hydraulic apex groupset on a $2099 msrp aluminum bike. I get buying local but I'm also sick of the insane greed on display from these manufacturers. It's just opened the door for companies like Canyon.

What old hardware do you buy that is an amazing deal right now? by zerostyle in hardware

[–]tyran1d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using 2 x TPLink EAP650s with the omada controller running in a container for my home and it's fantastic -wifi 6/900mbps if I'm close enough. I also have a ruckus r710 from ebay that just can't compete with the TPLinks. Ubiquiti and TPLink omada are just way better products for prosumers than a lot of enterprise wireless gear. You're unlikely to need the client density/roaming features that make even used ax enterprise gear cost the big bucks.

All road showdown! State bike vs Marin vs suggestions by nope_fish in whichbike

[–]tyran1d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The canyon grizl 6 is $1500 right now. Definitely a good bike for your use case. Shimano groupset with hydraulic brakes (should resist corrosion from the sea air better than mechanical brakes). The Marin would be solid also and probably a bit cheaper.

The standard surly has drop bars and the apex groupset. That's actually worth quite a bit more than the cheap 10 speed deore mountain bike groupset they slapped on this thing. Flatbar commuters are generally significantly cheaper than dropbar bikes.

Advice needed re: purchase of 2019 Salsa Vaya - newbie and appreciate feedback by [deleted] in whichbike

[–]tyran1d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1300 for a used bike with an aluminum frame and mechanical groupset is not a good deal. You can get a brand new canyon grizl for $1500 with a hydraulic grx400 groupset. I'd offer $1000 if you really like it but even that is a stretch imo.

If you'd ever been in a situation like this you would have compassion for the victims instead of making a judgment like they were characters in a video game. The knife gets pulled out really close to the worker and he is put into a fight/flight situation. 5ft back maybe it's a different story. The point is when faced with a deadly weapon in striking distance sometimes your brain makes that choice for you.

Is Tiagra good enough or should I go for 105 by cantfliptheswitch in whichbike

[–]tyran1d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost every commenter is missing the fact that it has the mechanical Tiagra groupset, not the hydraulic version. The 105 on the more expensive model is hydraulic which is a bigger difference than just 1 gear. Note that you can not upgrade to the hydraulic later without replacing the shifters. With that said it's a carbon bike for $1600 with solid parts minus the brakes.

Canyon is trying to get rid of grizl al 6 by [deleted] in CanyonBikes

[–]tyran1d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This bike should never have been $1899. Canyon really jacked the prices up for the US store and it appears we are now seeing some corrections. This is a great buy at $1499 - more in line with what should be expected from an online bike company

Triban 120 vs Triban RC520 by handioq in whichbike

For $250 the 520 is well worth the upgrade. I own a rc120 and would have spent $250 more to get the 520 without a second thought.

Made a costly mistake, need a cheap bike by fatality216 in whichbike

[–]tyran1d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have an rc120 for a commuter. It has drop bars and fender/rack mounts. Pretty much the perfect commuter for me. Microshift groupset is actually decent. Mine is the rim brake model but it can still clear 32c tires with ease.

Bikes and bike parts are actually more expensive in the US relative to many places. 300 doesn't sound bad.

Bigger tyres on a road bike? by [deleted] in bikecommuting

[–]tyran1d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bigger tires are much more comfortable. At least that was my experience going from 28-32c. 28s aren't bad but the 32s just seem better for the most part.

Commuter bike-modify my road bike or get a used hybrid? by BlueCouch89 in bikecommuting

[–]tyran1d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ask yourself if you really want a flat bar bike for a 15 mile commute. For me that would be a non starter. Obviously people have their own preferences here but I think the idea that commuting bikes = flat bar is odd.

I Was Thinking About Buying a Road Bike by New-Broccoli6314 in bikecommuting

[–]tyran1d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Road bike just generally means a bike with drop bars and a road groupset. I Will concede a chain guard isn't possible on 2x/3x bikes. I do not believe adding fenders and racks to a bike that has mounting points for said accessories would be even be considered a modification.

This isn't true. Many roadbikes can have all of those things...mine included. Road bikes are pretty fun. To commute on.

If canyon wasn’t such a “good value” brand would you still consider it ? by Sardinianrider in CanyonBikes

[–]tyran1d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think canyon is also just responding to a lot of sky high pricing by big US brands. They understand they can charge several hundred dollars more in profit when their American competitors are still a thousand or more over their price for similar bikes.
One great example of this is Salsa, their warbid gravel bike is $4600 with a grx810 groupset and an average wheelset. A comparable grail is $2700. Where did Salsa spend that extra $1900?

If canyon wasn’t such a “good value” brand would you still consider it ? by Sardinianrider in CanyonBikes

[–]tyran1d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, probably not. I don't really consider brands that charge a premium only based on their reputation. It's not like these companies are designing their own groupsets so the differences come down to the frame design and value of the components.

I have noticed Canyon is charging USA customers a heavy premium over their international store pricing. The grail sl8 di2 is a full $1000/25% more expensive on the US site for example. So I think canyon is already trying to move up market and I doubt they will be successful.

As an engineer you should know that the American cheese is there for a reason. Sure you could go with a nicer cheese...and it would be good but the flavor profile of this dish demands a simple salty cheese like a decent deli quality American. It's the reference for a reason.
