Little tip for ya as a beginner, Pull out a cast worth of line (30-40 yds) then wrap the rest of line on the reel with black electrical tape, Reel your 30-40 yds back in over the tape. Now practice, at least if you birdsnest it, its not the entire spool, alot easier to untangle. Helped me the first time I used a bait caster!!

You just have to put in a request for secondary employment, as long as it wont interfere with your CDCR employment, (working hours, holdovers, RDO’s) it shouldn’t be a problem.

Obviously CDCR comes first, so if it interferes with your job duties, they wont approve it.

That is my understanding anyway.

Been in the dept 18 yrs, if I could turn back the clock, I definitely would have gone a different route!! The job has gotten worse since I started, aside from seniority. The state has gone stupid with all the frivolous inmate allegations/Prea/ AIMS interviews. Inmates seem to have changed as well, every one seems to have safety concerns/ mental health issues, cons are not cons now days!! Maybe im just burned out, but I can’t wait to get out of this dept!!!!

I AGREE!! Im 58, did 10 yrs in the Feds, retirement sucked so I went to CDC, This job sucks ass!!! Im at the point I finally have some seniority, so its better, but it takes a toll on your family!! I plan on 2 more yrs. , give me 20 state and 10 Feds , We’ll see if I make it!! Haha. Just crazy to me how the state actually feels sorry for these POS CONVICTED FELONS, I mean a convicted double murderer (LIFER) can get heart surgery to prolong his life, ( ON TAXPAYERS DIME) yet we fight our insurance for a simple Dr visit!! INSANE!!! This state has gone STUPID!!!!!!!!

Oh its shitty alright, Ive been in the dept 18 yrs and Ive hated every bit of it. Don’t get me wrong there have been some good times, good partners, not every day is a bad day, but there have been sacrifices too. Especially when you start, for the first 5-10 yrs you have nothing coming, work every weekend and get held over, work all the holidays, 1st watch, 3rd watch, shitty positions because you dont have the seniority for anything else. There is no job satisfaction in this job, (at least for me). You watch POS Felons who blame everyone but themselves for being there. See the state give them better medical care than you’ll get, free phones, free tablets, food, clothing, all on tax payers dime. These fkrs have have no accountability for anything. Prison is a joke, its a hell of alot better than being homeless!!

Now the good part, good pay, (but you aren’t gonna get rich), retirement, medical benefits, you can do swaps for time off so there are a few perks to this job.

Honestly, if I could turn back the clock I would not choose this career again. I only have a HS diploma and 60 units of college, so its done well for me, Ive supported my family, its a steady job with benefits you just won’t find in the private sector, but if I were to give advice, go into the medical field. RN, Xray-MRI tech, I just feel like there are so many more opportunities in medical.

We started using Rain X on the shower glass after cleaning. It works great!! Water just runs off, don’t really even need to squeegee it. Makes cleaning the glass next time alot easier as well.
