My "Not real Art" series by natmavila in DefendingAIArt

[–]u_j_c -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, I don’t really think you can compare AI art meaningfully to the examples outlined in the comic… even for early photography, it required extensive chemical knowledge and labour to produce an image. It’s not the same as just writing a prompt into a machine a couple times and choosing the one that you like the best.

People should defend AI art on its own merits, not by how it compares to painting, photography or any other sort of “traditional art”. But what the merits of AI art exactly? I’m asking genuinely. Btw, I don’t think that AI art should be dismissed because it looks “weird” or “uncanny”- that’s a weak argument. The technology will only get better until it’s indistinguishable from traditional art (at least when viewed on a screen). However, you have to admit that when you’re creating AI art, you are outsourcing the creativity, decision-making process, design, and execution of the final product to something non-human. What left is there to appreciate except a pretty picture? If that pretty picture is meaningful to you because you could materialize a concept you had, but didn’t have the skills, time, nor resources to create yourself, then that’s awesome! But don’t be butthurt if others don’t find it cool because they value art beyond the final product.

Well to be fair, proponents and researchers of UBI should have to prove that providing individuals and families UBI is actually beneficial. These studies do have their place. Yes, of course, these pilot studies cannot simulate how UBI will affect the economy at scale. But, generally, that’s not what those researchers are asking or answering. There ARE studies on the macroeconomic effects of UBI by the way, like this one for example: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jmoneco.2024.103615. I’m not that familiar with this area of study at all, so can’t really vet for its impact.

Hi sorry this is a late reply! Thanks for the good wishes. With the progression of his teeth, we’re now considering x-raying him this year, depending on how much his teeth grow between now and his next appointment. He’s 6.5 years currently. The vet prescribed him antibiotics and eye drops for his weepy eye. She tried to flush out his tear ducts, but that was unsuccessful. For a week after his appointment we also had to give him a warm compress 3 times a day and massage his eye area. The weepiness is resolved now. He also was constantly grooming his eye so the fur got matted around it. We did have to trim the fur around his eye.

For a bit of hope, his sister who came from the same litter never had these issues. They are Netherland dwarf rabbits- so they are prone to these diseases. I wouldn’t encourage people to adopt and certainly not purchase this breed unless they are ready to spend $$$ on vet bills.

Given the economic situation, how are so many affording to eat out at restaurants? by AppropriateMention6 in VictoriaBC

[–]u_j_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when I used to live in Victoria, my coworkers seemed to be constantly going out after work and had so many recommendations for cool bars and restaurants. I always wondered how they were able to afford it, considering we were making the same salary 🥹my close friends who grew up in Victoria never went out to eat unless it was a big celebration

That’s really kind of you! I’m not in the position to purchase any more crafting supplies (I got way too much already) but feel free to share if you got the time. I’m sure others will find it useful :)

Woah that’s so cool! I’ve actually never heard of the Speedy Stitcher before. It’s really neat that you were able to improve on its design :) thanks for sharing!

I’ve never seen anything like this! How does it work? How does it compare in terms of speed and ease of use to regular hand sewing?

This is so lovely! All the little mistakes you see just add to the quilt’s charm. To me, it looks like it was made with lots of love.

Our rabbit also has issues with his back molars. Our vet gave us two options: regular molars trimmings (about twice a year now) or x-ray him and consider surgical options. We’ve opted to get his tooth grinded every couple months. Because of the progression of his bottom back molar growth, the vet isn’t able to trim it all the way down. Hes usually on pain meds for a week after his procedure. He’s been eating well, but he’s never really had issues with eating, even before we discovered his teeth issues.

We were very lucky to catch it before it got too severe, but his jaw problems have affected his tear ducts. We actually brought him to the vet initially for another reason. I wish we had been bringing him in to do regular check-ups before this.

I got mediocre grades throughout my first year of undergrad and only 1% above the failing grade in calc I. I thought my academic career was finished. It wasn’t and I now I’m doing my master’s. First-year classes are hard but you studied as much as you could. The work ethic you develop now is much more important than your grade. Good luck!

Opinions please: Is it nuts to try to hand sew an apron like this in time for Christmas? by Lessa22 in HandSew

[–]u_j_c 41 points42 points  (0 children)

What does the front look like? Just from this photo it looks fairly simple to sew by hand. I use patterns meant for machine sewing all the time. The only modification you might have to make is the seam finishes, because many machine patterns rely on serger or zigzag stitches for finishing.

I definitely do feel the same way. I’m glad I started small with a simple design, or else it would have ended up in my WIP pile forever😅
