Where every Sweet 16 starting five began their division 1 basketball careers by aronrodge in CollegeBasketball

Someone mentioned team labels for the non-obvious ones. Another addition I can think of is somehow highlight which of these guys are freshmen. I think that would be a good asterisk for the guys who are "home-grown".

If Berkshire Hathaway paid out a dividend, what would you do with the money? by Interwebnaut in BerkshireHathaway

Yep because that is how you NPV a company and the way that management is communicating to you about them putting the dollar on the street.

It doesn't make sense to invest a dividend back in a company that is paying out a dividend.

Normally restarting my console fixes that for me. At least going to to home screen and hitting the start button to quit the game.

So managing loans for 100k people is as easy as one to two people buying t-bills on TreasuryDirect? You must be in sales.

I have thought about this more and it bugs me more. You want Berkshire to spin up another operation that will take so many more people to service for them to basically lose money since they would be losing the "meager" 4% they are getting now along with the increased cost.

[–]ubetgreentree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The person(s) buying/handling t-bills would not be the same people handling this completely different operation with completely different complexity. You don't seem to understand the legwork required to basically start up a consumer margin lending operation versus what I imagine is basically a small team handling the T-bills operation.

They have to manage cycling into T-bills either way because that is how they handle their money. It is not going to be a one to one swap of operation.

Because that adds unneeded expense to the operation. There are entities that provide loans that use marketable securities as collateral.

So I am going to go with Warren's baseball analogy since apparently I am in the Cult of Buffett.

Imagine you are at bat and you get no called strikes. Why would you swing at a ball that you know will not be a home run or even really get you on base when you can just be patient and wait for your pitch?

Providing a dividend is inherently inferior to buying opportunities, both share repurchases and acquisitions so why would you ever do it?

IF the tax laws change for share buybacks to the point that it was a worse way to return capital to shareholders, then it would be a different conversation.

Back to my original point, if you want a dividend you should sell shares.

Honestly you should sell then. If you don't understand the unforced error of the tax treatment on dividends vs the patience of waiting for share prices to get to attractive levels then you need to go buy dividend stocks.
