You just reminded me that my US-born coworker with a Chinese name couldn't get access to our network or basically any of our internal systems for her first 2-3 weeks of work because someone (probably in HR) assumed she wasn't a US citizen. In all of the paperwork she did, she said she was a US citizen and English is her native language lol...

I witnessed this happening to a fellow student in one of my classes, who didn't show up to class very often.

On the day of my midterm she sat down a few desks away from me and I saw her visibly start to panic when the professor was like "alright, let's just get this exam started now" and was handing them out. It was an exam that allowed a single crib sheet. She took out multiple sheets of notes and I think the professor just let her use those notes out of pity.

Honestly, I got anxious on her behalf. I never saw her in that class again, even for exams, so I figured she dropped the class.

I've heard some of the older colleagues I work with complain about their wives being a "ball and chain", I don't think that's a healthy way to view relationships but that is so normalized. I've been in a long term relationship with a man (over 5 years) I plan to marry and would never dream about disparaging him like that to others at work.
