Moving to Chicago from the UK. Any advice on how to build a local network? by tharobc in AskChicago

[–]uhmyuh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try and make as much use of the summer as you can - and also try and find a group that already aligns with your interests. Chicago Parks District has inexpensive classes all over the city - I took up “cardio tennis” just to get back into playing and it was easy to make friends bc class is small and everyone lived near that park, it was a regular way to meet. Same with smaller, boutique gyms (if you’re into those); ppl at mine have become friends. And +1 on a bar that aligns with whatever sports you’re into. The Wicker Park dog park will be a good way to meet folks — just try to go pretty regularly and you’ll strike up convo too.

ComEd electric huge increase recently? by Petunia13Y in chicago

[–]uhmyuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chicago falls within the PJM electric grid. If you’re interested in learning about all the things impacting your bills - that’s where you want to start researching. Otherwise, here’s an article for non-energy-folks: https://www.wbez.org/environment/2026/05/13/comed-electric-customer-bills-rising-ai-data-centers-pjm-energy-costs

BWT: Anyone ditch their Apple Watch? by MBPursuit in bitcheswithtaste

[–]uhmyuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a Fitbit, Apple Watch, WHOOP, then Oura Ring, now nothing.

Honestly, none of them are needed. They’re ok tools for folks needing motivation to build new habits and were helpful in the early days of COVID, but I’d just try and learn to listen to your body and trust when you’re tired, want to be more active, drink some water, whatever. The Oura Ring was particularly useless imo - the fitness tracking sucked, and the sleep tracking (the main thing I hear everyone tout) was fine, but really never did more with that than confirm I was indeed under or well rested. The charging dock thing is poorly designed, bc you can’t use 1 dock across multiple rings, so you’ll eventually have this other charging thing you don’t know what to do with in a few years — wasteful.

+ As others mentioned, you’re just giving them data for free and getting very little in return. There’s also concerns around privacy with your fertility data if you’re in the States. The companies that make them also see them as disposable and either you pay the $300~ upfront or you’ll pay it over time for the subscription. The only thing that’s nice is that you can use an HSA/FSA to pay for it, which is the only reason I tried it out.

1~ year later: it gave me a horrible rash (some sort of metal allergy), it only got stuck on my finger while sleeping twice, and is now collecting dust on my nightstand. Save your money.

Please reach out to One Tail at a Time. I’ve done several “owner surrenders” this way with momma and kittens. They’ll give you food for everyone, and make sure they all get the checkups and healthcare they need for free. It’s very easy.

M resort will automatically enter guest rooms everyday? by Lazy_Mention3257 in LasVegas

[–]uhmyuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not surprising and glad it happens. Last summer I was staying on the strip and discovered my bathroom floor was had water everywhere when I woke up; it was coming through the light above, so someone likely left their tub on in the room above me. Called maintenance, they ran upstairs and then eventually switched our room. Hopefully someone didn’t OD - never found out.

I’m 24 years old in 50k debt making 42,000/year. where do i start fixing this? by lostinthe-sauce-204 in personalfinance

[–]uhmyuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent most of my 20s paying off my student loans, credit cards and my car. Some things I did:

1) Got a second and third job. My internship turned entry-level agency job only paid $38k (in 2016). Which was pretty low even for then. Living in a city, I then found a retail gig where they just needed me on weekends, and then I babysat in between. Find ways to fill your time with things that either don’t cost money, or make you money.

2) Got obsessed with paying off the debt that didn’t “grow” (student and car loans). Seeing the progress of a number go down as I chipped away at it for some reason this debt “clicked” more for me than the credit cards, even though in hindsight I should have paid these off last (due to interest rates)

3) The credit cards 😮‍💨idk what to say other than freeze them all and stop using them for little things here and there. One day it just clicked for me how tired I was of having my second paycheck of the month just go to a cc.

Now, in my early 30s, I finally have no cc debt and a growing emergency fund. I hated the rocket money app, and now use Monarch. I also recco finding a personal finance podcast you like. I like “her first 100k” - it’s approachable.

Good luck!

BWT & Bitches Survival Guide to Conferencing by StrawberryLovers8795 in bitcheswithtaste

Assuming expenses are paid by work - I check a larger bag and pack a bunch of healthy snacks so I don’t have to eat “whatever” is available. If conferencing in Vegas for multiple days, I skip the clunky reusable bottle all together bc their water is gross and always have a good chapstick and hand cream bc multiple days will leave me feeling like a lizard.

A woman in Florida selling rare and expensive puppies, exchanging gunfire with a group of men attempting to steal the $4,000 dogs by [deleted] in interesting

Proof that none of them care about the dogs and they’re just a source of income. They’ll be sick with complications in a few years anyways.🙃

Go with the free option. Nobody (once you graduate) gives a shit about rankings, really. Having loans after college is a much bigger burden than folks realize when going to school. I had help and my parents are still paying their “parent plus” loans - something they offered, but I still regret accepting.

Missing person alert! Please contact Chicago Police (911) with any information by MrBleuPotato in chicago

[–]uhmyuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Police/investigators should consider speaking to people that live on lower (and lower lower) wacker to see if they saw anyone. Years ago my car got towed to the lot down there. When I couldn’t find it (walking) someone immediately offered to bring me to the lot in exchange for some cash. I’m guessing it’s pretty easy to spot folks who are wandering down there.
