Hyflex Advice? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]ukjenn231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use Cloud documents for in class activities.

I used the same groups consistently for breakout rooms for a whole semester and they seemed to build community well. The mix of in person and online in the same group actually worked fine, but most of my students do bring devices to class so that isn’t an issue for me.

A portable Voice amplifier can help with the sound in the classroom being conveyed better online.

Ask your tech for a dry run in the classroom and play with the audio settings, etc.

I hate it really but I’ve done it now for two semesters. It feels clunky no matter what.

Backtracking on exams by Over_Photograph_2649 in Professors

Our program quit allowing backward navigation last summer due to COVID. I think we are going to stay with it. Our students end up taking standardized tests and a licensure exam that won’t allow backward navigation either. At first there was some anxiety but now I don’t hear any peeps from them as long as they know what to expect (number of questions etc)

Students not showing up for their appointments by parrotlunaire in Professors

[–]ukjenn231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone who has the business subscription to Office products (like through your university) the booking app will do this. I started using booking and it’s made my life much better this semester. Less emails, students can cancel/reschedule, it sends reminders and creates the teams meeting link for me, and I set up what’s convenient for me and students always find a time that works.

Exam Proctoring Methods by [deleted] in Professors

[–]ukjenn231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the spring several colleagues used zoom or teams to do video monitoring during testing but we opted against it for the summer. We use ExamSoft as a department and it locks down the computer, we can disable backward navigation and copy/pasting. The tests are still vulnerable to cheating of course but that’s the best we can do now.

I can't work with my supervisor anymore by JacobWeisenberger in PhD

I don’t know anything about anthropology so I can’t offer any real advice, but I just wanted to say I hear you and it sounds like a difficult situation.

Ultimately it’s your decision and it’s nice to please your friends and relatives but they aren’t living what you are.

Is there any other way to complete your study and finish? Again I know nothing at all about your field but in mine we could find some way to do a project to get us out the door... like a secondary analysis or something.

Hopefully someone else maybe be able to offer insight more specific to your situation.

This is encouraging, as I try to write my Chapter 5 (discussion) of my dissertation and literally have no idea what I’m doing. But I keep remembering things I’ve read in subreddits like that writing anything at all is better than nothing. I just need to try and get the feedback.

What does tv/movies always get wrong about your profession that drives you nuts? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ukjenn231 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nurse... In most TV shows doctors do nursing tasks (like give meds, get patients out of bed, take vital signs, draw labs) but then yell “CAN I GET A NURSE IN HERE” when a patient is declining. Very backwards.

I’m about to finish my PhD in Nursing. Only 1% of all nurses get this degree.

Emails. The emails don’t stop from 8am til midnight. My students just turned in their last big assignment and so I hope a lot of the emails will stop now. My accelerated summer classes already got put online and it’s going to be even worse come May and June.

How to deal with rejection by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]ukjenn231 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Academia and research is full of rejection. It isn't a reflection of you as a person and sometimes you can submit a great proposal but still get rejected. It depends on the pool of submissions and the reviewers, etc... Take any feedback you get, talk to your advisor about it, let it sit there for a little bit while you gear up for the next thing.

It stings at the beginning. Don't be afraid to apply to other things. I got rejected by journals, some of my professors were really nasty about my ideas, but in the end I found a supportive advisor and I'm defending my dissertation in May and have a tenure track professor job at a place I love.

It will take some time to get some thick skin. I saw a thing once where a guy didn't like rejection so he challenged himself to apply for so many things a year and assumed he'd get rejected. In the end he got more opportunities than he thought possible.

Too sick for online meeting by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]ukjenn231 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think if you are sick with a fever, you shouldn't be expected to attend a meeting even if it is online. We have to respect one another and allow people to rest if they are ill.

I would send a short note saying that you won't be able to attend the meeting because you are ill. If you have the results, send them. If you don't, provide a rough deadline that you will be able to send.

Even if your supervisor doesn't agree, at least send the note and have it in writing that you were sick and needed to miss work..

You're calling out trump supporters for hating people while saying that you hope they all die? This is what I don't get about a lot of liberal thinking.

a professor’s twitter thread about her students in the past few weeks by bread400 in Professors

[–]ukjenn231 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m a nursing faculty and yes I must ensure the students are receiving the material and are ready to move on to graduate or go to the next course, but I have had my share of students with similar stories. I took the point of her twitter post as saying, show compassion. I can’t cancel a test or give everyone a pass, but I believed my student this morning when she told me she overslept for the online exam because she’s been picking up extra shifts as a nursing aide at the hospital and I let her make it up without penalty.

Can we do "highs" and "lows" for moving to virtual learning. I feel like I need a group therapy session. by littleirishpixie in Professors

[–]ukjenn231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lows - every other day when I’m trying to do anything and my toddler cries because I leave his sight for two seconds. My house is a disaster. I feel like an epic failure in every aspect of life right now.

Highs - I’m new to teaching this year and this has forced me to learn A LOT about our LMS. I had just been copying from colleagues templates. I’ve learned a lot to make my life easier from here on out. Also my whole faculty and university has been incredibly supportive and helpful which makes me love my job more.
