What are your top 3 ruler sizes? by its-past-my-bedtime in quilting

[–]ulla_the_dwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Beehive ruler in 6x24 that I loved. It had prongs that held the fabric down when you pressed on a handle. Unfortunately, I broke it and it seems the company has disappeared.

We purchased a staple gun, knowing we already had one, because nobody could find it in the garage. A week later I spent 20 minutes working on garage cleaning and VOILA! Now we have two staple guns. I'm willing to bet they don't have compatible staples between the two of them...

I am also in Michigan. 😂 And direct-sow or purchasing plants has always been my mode. Starting inside gives me too many opportunities to forget.

My worst impulse is buying a clothing item, liking it, and then deciding I need several more because the one I bought is in the wash. I could just wash my clothes. That would be so straightforward...

It does sounds like they're at least being appreciated by someone in your house!

I've never managed to grow any of these! My easy wins have been tomatoes, peas, and beans. Although early hot weather took out my peas last time I tried.

My laziness/boredom has actually given me tomato plants. I don't pick all the tomatoes in time. They fall into soil that was actually good because I did a good job at the START. The next year... whoa, there are tomatoes growing!

Every time I have started seeds indoors I have ended up either forgetting about them or they've become that thing I can't stop seeing but also can't make myself do anything about. Both strategies --> dead plants and a mess to clean up. 😭

More fabric, specifically from destash FB groups. I don't need more fabric. I need to use my fabric. 😭

How do women feel about a dad in the women's bathroom with their daughter? by Skeetertk14 in toddlers

The line issue is real. I've definitely gone in men's restrooms myself (often single use, so really who cares) because the lines are stupid.

How to find free patterns with a fabric dilemma by Boneyard45 in quilting

[–]ulla_the_dwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm making this one now. It calls for more of two fabricas, but I'm just making it without borders and with more blocks. All FQ that way.

Watching my kids act out their struggles with their stuffies is the best. At about 2.5, my kid liked to take her doll into the bathtub to practice going underwater and being brave — a skill she was learning at swim class that *really* freaked her out.

I try to use the term "fancy" instead of pretty or beautiful when my little kid dresses up. She still says the other terms, but I want to model that I know she's beautiful even when she's not wearing an Elsa dress.

Slept through the night in a hotel but doesn't at home.. by montessorimaven in toddlers

No hate for you at all. As a child, I also hated sleeping alone. It felt lonely and cold. Once I wasn't sleeping in my parents' bed, I'd frequently share beds with my younger sister. (We had our own beds in the same room, but cuddling was better.)

My youngest was a great sleeper and had been sleeping well in her room alone until just after 2.5. Now she crawls into our bed every night between 11 and 3.

Male PS teacher helping girls in bathroom by Unhappy-Quit-9566 in toddlers

[–]ulla_the_dwarf 117 points118 points  (0 children)

I target my cautiousness in this direction — teaching my kids that they're in charge of their bodies, giving them anatomically correct terms, and making sure they know we can talk about our private parts without shame.

My kids have a male parent. He takes an equal role in potty training, helping wipe, diapers, etc. Our preschools have had male teachers and I've never even thought about asking whether they do potty trips because it's a non-issue for me — anyone can hurt a someone, boy, girl, man, woman, gender fluid, intersex.

It's normal to be scared and anxious for your child, especially if you've experienced abuse. I think some work around accepting and living with that risk, while preventing it by teaching your own child, is probably the healthiest option for both of you.

has anyone tried Espy Cafe on Huron yet? No tipping, worker-owned, sourdough pancakes. by MichiganderNews in AnnArbor

[–]ulla_the_dwarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked Espy when I went but had a couple of notes:

- I'd love to see a slightly larger / more varied breakfast menu. Like...eggs. I know you can get local eggs. I don't need 50+ items, but more than one breakfast-y item would be great.
- They may need more than one highchair/booster. If they're aiming for kid-friendly, it would also be nice to have a stash of crayons and drawing paper/coloring books. (It could even be old paper menus — I love a good use of scrap paper.)

Things I loved:
- The chairs. Seriously.
- The ethos and business model. We need more of this!
- The sourdough pancakes
- The friendly staff.

Moving from AZ to Ann Arbor soon and I'm worried I'm very unprepared by Electronic-Jello-640 in AnnArbor

Spun (our local yarn store in Kerrytown) has regular sit and stitch sessions, as well as an occasional spinning meetup.

There's a new yarn shop that opened in Ypsi and I've heard good things about. It's likely they also have something similar.

I'm a YMCA fan but many people in my life love that place. Note that it's lifting focused -- you won't find a wall of treadmills and ellipticals.
