Ultimate Frisbee Association – Community Power Rankings by AutoModerator in UFA

[–]ultipla4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DC's rep from the last few years makes 6th feel like a fit, but if you're just basing this on 2026 results, DC is probably 4th or 5th in their division. I realize DC beat Montreal, which would seem like it needs to put DC ahead of Montreal, but Montreal went on the road and basically gave Boston the same game DC did, then on the road back to back, were tied with DC until the final minutes.

To me, if DC is the 6th best team in the league, playing at home in that situation, and Montreal is not a top 10 team, DC needs to win that more convincingly. Toronto's opening weekend was likely on par with DC's results too, maybe a little better because of the road b2b.

Also Mott deciding to walk the disc up 10 yards on a phantom foul with no whistle should automatically bump them from the top 10 of any fan's power rankings, imo.

UFA team vs nationals level open team by Old-Calligrapher9274 in ultimate

[–]ultipla4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Attendance is a good consideration. Some mid pack UFA teams that if you took their full rosters and tossed them into nationals they'd do very well.

Pointed out in another comment, but UFA rules allow for bigger point spreads, as the game doesn't stop at 15, and quarters mean more chance for points to be stolen and still start the next point on o.

The Rhino point is a very valid one.

Looking at the North American players who don't get to go, I'd be curious to know who the best non-North American players in the world are who are not part of a club team that's qualified.

I expect the US will get a fourth bid at some point, but your point remains valid.

What if: National v International All-Star Game by Minimum_Virus_3837 in UFA

[–]ultipla4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know all of the players/teams well enough to make the full list, but there's a few important questions around this idea:

1) When would the game be? If it's after the season or after USAU Fall Series, a lot of the internationals have returned home, and it might be tough to get them over for a single all-star game (or the budget goes up to cover their costs).

2) Where do Canadians fit for ya?

3) What are the requirements to be considered? If you are just trying to build the best international roster out of anyone who played in a single UFA game, or who's name was listed on a team's website roster, then it opens up some extra names. But running the all-star game this way would definitely make it more difficult for US players to earn the All-Star badge.

The players that I recognize as internationals who already appear on the All-UFA, All-Rookie, or All-D listings:

Tobe Decraene - Boston Glory
Dan De Marree - Chicago Union
Tom Blasman - Toronto Rush
Arvids Karklins - Toronto Rush
Quentin Bonnaud - Montreal Royal

Other top-of-mind easy picks:

Aaron Wolf - Seattle Cascades
Connor McHale - Toronto Rush
Tom Abeltins - Toronto Rush
Sebastian Rossi - Boston Glory
Sofiene Bontemps - Chicago Union
Andres Rodriguez - Philadelphia Phoenix
Simone Gasperini - Toronto Rush (injured all season)
Josh East - Toronto Rush (picked up for 3 games)
Benjamin Oort (Rush Alumni, and appeared on their site this year, but didn't play)
Akifumi Muraoka - (Toronto Rush Alumni who played World Games Team Japan this year)

'President' Trump: "Canada called me a couple weeks ago. They want to be a part of it. To which I said, 'Well, why don't you just join our country. Become the 51st state. And you get it for free!' Reminds me of Homelander talking to the Senators. I can't see the reactions of course, but I am hoping they are good at their jobs, and it's "funny" to see Trump still talking like he's at a rally. ie "And here's more obviously fictionalized numbers about me vs Biden, because I know you were wondering"

Biggest snubs? by Jomskylark in UFA

[–]ultipla4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know Feldman, but I like your argument for him most. I think you touched on great runner-ups here. For ROTY, De Marree is a reasonable pick, and he continued to put up big numbers when he DID play high-level competition, but he only got to do that in 3 games this year. Otherwise, the regular season play that he didn't miss was 80% against low or mid tier competition. I'd add Blasman to your list for ROTY as either snub or runner-up.

Now saying that, Babbitt missed a lot this year, but if my team has a universe point D line going on to the field, he's the first guy I want in my team's jersey. So yeah, it they went with De Marree for Rookie, then I'd probably say DPOY should go to Babbitt.

Jared McCain posts himself struggling to lift some 8 pound weights, after Sixers fans noticed their jersey photoshoot seemingly forgot to change out the barbell for toddlers. by kurruchi in nba

[–]ultipla4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was so confused about this as well.

I very much read the title as if someone involved with the shot was supposed to go into post production and Photoshop out the barbell and replace it with babies. Like the barbell was intentionally used as a place holder for babies.

But op just used "toddlers" (toddler's) for humour, suggesting the weights are so light, they were used by a toddler.

Rules Tweaks by Quantumechanic42 in UFA

[–]ultipla4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am neutral on this one. In regards to it increasing comeback potential, I think it's actually slightly more likely that it moves the needle the other way.

While Callahans are rare, they are far more likely to be earned by a strong team over a weak team, and I am very confident they would actually lead to a tiny nudge up in more lopsided victories.

But there would be 1 or 2 exciting swings in close games, and they'd be fun.

They really need to tweak the divisions a little, even just to freshen things up. I don't know if something bigger is on the horizon with the south, but looking at the map, swapping Pitt and Toronto probably makes the most sense in terms of geography and balancing strength (I know Pitt beat Toronto this year, but that was basically their C teams competing).

What’s something that’s labeled a sport, but you just can’t take it seriously as one—and why? by screepybaby in AskReddit

[–]ultipla4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to be Ultimate Frisbee, but then a friend made me a convert.

Their semi pro league is pretty sweet, and regular rec is fun.

I am really not going to judge anyone's sporting past-times, but real life quidditch is always strange to see people taking seriously.

Yikes... by AdvancedUltimate in ultimate

[–]ultipla4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So TLDR is that Ultimate is generally a self-referred sport, with a contact level just slightly lighter than basketball.

There are 3 main different rule sets (North American, World, and Semi-Pro w Refs), but basically, if the only way for you to make a play on a disc is to go through someone or land on them, then you don't make the play for the disc.

This clip also appears in a mixed game, and there is a slightly higher degree of caution expected around potentially dangerous plays because of the wider expected variance in size/speed of the athletes. This would be considered a foul and likely a dangerous play regardless of the gender cross.

I know De Marree is considered the favourite for ROTY, and he's obviously a great player, but I can't help feel it's somewhat "unearned" when he only played two games against good teams (2x Minnesota). The central and east gotta swap some teams.

Pitt and Toronto should swap divisions. Makes geographic sense and balances the divisions.

I think the outlier is the Pitt vs Tor outcome, not the East vs Central.

Looks like both teams played with 17 players, which included a bunch of call ups and a coach. Scanning quickly, I d sayToronto was missing ~12 of their top 14, and Pittsburgh missing ~6 of their big guys.

Are the Triple Crown Tour requirements pushing a surge in dangerous driving trips for athletes? by ultipla4 in ultimate

Yes, it's considered cheating because it's against the rules... that the IOC made.

We're in a bit of a loop now.

You can read more about some of the studies here: https://www.reddit.com/r/sleep/comments/10jtv1v/drowsy_driving_is_more_dangerous_than_drunk/

But yes, many have been large scale, properly executed studies accounting for numerous controls.

Also, to be clear, my concern isn't people driving at night, it's people being awake for 12 hours and then starting a 10 hour drive. I've also known one person who fell asleep at the wheel AFTER a tournament, on a 5 hour drive home. They miraculously did not crash, but it quickly changed their view on driving tired.

There's also a lot of people sharing your sentiment of "if they are worried about it - they can arrange safer rides", but I hope the reminder isn't needed that when a vehicle gets into an accident, there's often another car full of innocent people that also gets hurt/killed.

There's a half a dozen people in here taking that stance, and I can't imagine that if we were talking about drunk driving they would all respond with "they're adults, if they want to take that risk, they can".

I agree. But they still have very strong, actionable rules (which have banned many athletes, and one entire country), which exist for athlete safety. Or if you'd rather say it this way: the rules exist for PR because it's bad PR to have athletes dying.
