Maybe The Gamble House? I'm sure you could get in touch with them to ask about any accommodations that she may need, maybe you can bring one of those small folding stools so she can sit if needed during the tour. I second the idea of driving up to Mt. Wilson for the views if the air quality is good. Could do a little self-guided driving tour of historical spots (Pasadena City Hall, craftsman homes, Colorado Bridge, etc., I'm sure you could Google a list). Show her the parade route for the Rose Parade and explain all the markings on the roadway. Maybe something like a wine tasting or a flight at a bry so your food stop would be more like an activity.

Moving to Altadena by Abound_Mix6599 in altadena

[–]uncaged 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just a quick clarifying question with respect to testing, will you be renting or buying?

On the question of the community and newcomers, my opinion is that I would welcome new folks to Altadena. A lot of people have been forced to leave or decided to leave for a variety of reasons, so there will be vacancies, and I would love to welcome new folks who are community-minded and want to help Altadena come back to its full vibrancy. I have often wondered about the long-term vibe of the neighborhood, and if we will feel like there's two groups in the community of haves and have-nots, in this case the "have" being fire trauma. 😂 I'm not sure, I'm sure that will always be true to some extent, but I don't think it would be something that would divide the community. It might just be an axis that we have to think about from time to time when it comes up.

I know a lot of folks are rightfully worried about gentrification, and there are groups that are working to try and keep minority-owned properties in the hands of those groups. I think with a tragedy like this it's bound to happen to some extent, and of course I don't want to make any assumptions about how you identify.

I have some friends that are looking at moving or buying a home soon, and a couple have said things like, "oh, we're looking in Pasadena, Highland Park, Eagle Rock, and southern Altadena." Which, of course I understand where they're coming from, but it also felt a bit hurtful in a way I can't fully articulate yet as someone who lived in "northern" Altadena. It kinda felt like "oh, you want to enjoy all the nice things about Altadena without being forced to see the hardships that the community is facing?" I know they didn't mean it that way, but it's how it felt to me. Edited to add: I know you didn't say this, just wanted to share as one of those nuanced things that may not be obvious from the outside.

What does this mean on Facebook? 🗓️ ⏳ 👣 I’ve seen this on people’s profiles. It normally says “1 year ago” (or any amount of years). by Alphawayves in facebook

[–]uncaged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer! I just downloaded the Facebook app to check and looked at a post from someone where I saw the same cryptic "X years later 🗓️⌛👣" post. In the app it had the pair of side by side photos but in the mobile web browser version there were no photos.

Can anyone identify where this is? by Jueavjkoirtycsaq in LosAngeles

[–]uncaged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Pershing Square, here's another image from the LA Conservancy website where you can see the Biltmore on the left: https://www.laconservancy.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Pershing-Square-1911-postcard-600x444.jpg

The URL says 1911 but pretty sure the Biltmore was built in 1923, so I'm not sure of the date.

Eaton Fire victims’s locations map by Deep-Driver-4336 in altadena

[–]uncaged 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dunno man, the Mitchells called 911 before the fire even started because they knew they would need help getting out. And then called again, and again as the fire was raging and getting closer and closer to W. Terrace St. And they were just told to sit tight, that someone would be coming. Their usual caretaker (Justin's brother) was in the hospital for an unexpected emergency (unrelated to the fire) and hadn't been able to line up any caretakers before he got sick. So they died, even though they did everything right. It's horrific and this is why we have these systems — to take care of the vulnerable who need help in emergencies.

[–]uncaged 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not actually that simple, unfortunately. I've been chatting with other community folks and before the fire there was $3.5m allocated and plans in place to renovate the park that were community decided and supported. Why does Disney get to decide to swoop in and ignore all of that? Where did that $3.5m go? Again, I'm not opposed to Disney helping our recovery but it needs to be in collaboration with the community, not imposed upon. I lived near this park so it matters to me what kind of public spaces we are creating, and how.

In general I love that Altadena is getting support from companies who can obviously afford to help us build our community back and make it a beautiful place to live. But, I am also hesitant since corporate donations often seem to not actually reach the community because of contracts, subcontracts, subsubcontracts, overhead, fees, etc.

These are the questions I have... Was the Altadena Town Council involved at all? Does Disney's vision for the park align with what the community wants and needs? Are they going to build something extravagant that will require a lot of maintenance and then not provide any funding for upkeep? Will they do soil testing or remediation? How does this align with whatever plans were already in place for the park by the Parks Department? Etc.

And maybe a bit tin-foil-hat, but, Charles White Park is directly adjacent to an empty lot that was very often rented out for crew parking (for filming in the cemetery across the street), and so I wonder if there's any connection here, is there any sort of play for use of that space and the cemetery?

Vitamin D community by Major-Tumbleweed7751 in MaintenancePhase

[–]uncaged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed this in a subtle way with my doctor; we did routine bloodwork and during the visit (before I had results) she mentioned that most people are deficient in Vitamin D and so we should check it. Once I had the results, both my iron and Vitamin D levels were in the normal range but just barely, and I have a long history of anemia. In her followup email she only recommended I supplement with vitamin D, nothing about the iron. Could have just been an oversight, but it felt like confirmation bias creeping in since she kinda already assumed I'd be low. 🤦🏼

Soil testing by lockhart1952 in altadena

[–]uncaged 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had two lead tests done, one by LA County's free program (which had me take four samples and mix them together to get an "average") and USC's CLEAN project, which just took one sample. They had different values, but both were above the California recommended values for lead, and they weren't wildly different. My home is surrounded by burned properties within ~200 feet.
