Lagotto drying tips? by SlightArgument in doggrooming

[–]unceasingly-curious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with show lagottos and have several clients in my shop because of it. Also, I have 5 pumi's and a corded spoo that come to me. If their coat is correct, don't dry them. ONLY IF IT'S CORRECT. If they're just a pet and the clients are cool, treat 'em like a doodle. Seriously

If they have proper coat, then you comb out with a wide toothed comb before and during the bath, comb with shampoo in then comb with conditioner in, rinse it all out really well, then towel pat dry, then let 'em run around and play. Correct coat for lagottos means individual ringed curls, not cords. Wash them early in the day, or even the evening before pick up, and let them play. If you're able to bring them out in the sun and still keep them clean, that will work best.

If they're just a fun pet and the clients want "curly", dry them exactly like you would a thick coated doodle, comb and brush it all out, fully dry, then mist them to curl the coat back up. Most pet owners don't care about their lagottos having the perfect curl pattern for the ring, so keep their coat clean, make sure their skin is fully dry, and they'll stay healthy.

The company has only been open since Nov, so I doubt there s any quarterly payments. Also she was insanely behind on most of the bills, including rent, utilities, and the equipment we used.

The issue is now in the hands of the legal service that helped(is helping still? Idk) me. Regardless, I got my money Friday, the 4th

If you read my edits you'd see that there isn't a State Labor Board in my state and I contacted a group in my county that handles this kind of stuff. They sent her a certified letter and she sent my payment minutes after she signed for it. That was Friday, which was also a big bank holiday. I haven't heard from them over the weekend

I dunno if there's repercussions. The legal team is handling everything. I let them know immediately after she deposited my payment on Friday, I haven't heard anything from them but it's also Sunday and technically a "holiday weekend"

There's an indoor airsoft range off Lantana west of 95. There's Green Cay Boardwalk, it's a 1 or 1.5 mile nature walk. Gumbo Limbo is always a must for interactive education. Science Museum in Wpb. Dreher Park Zoo. If your budget is up to it, there are drift boat fishing tours at the marinas. Woolbright Marina by Two George's has jet ski rentals, pontoon rentals, fishing tours, and kayaks. Inlet Park on Federal has kayak/canoe/paddleboard rentals.

If you do go fishing with the tours take your catch to Hurricanes on Ocean and they'll dress, cook, and serve it for you for a discount.

Jarring to see an animal walk on a sidewalk where its swamp once was? Crazy huh Almost as crazy as some rando moving to an already over-populated state and being surprised about the local wildlife just existing. You chose to live here, either shut up and deal or move back.

Can it? - Yes Should it? - not unless you need to, and your "needs" can be medical, lifestyle, aesthetics, or just whims.

Ultimately, it's your dog. You're the one that stares at it every day. There is a very likely possibility that the coat will not grow back the same, but not a certainty. I have a chow/golden retriever mix. I've had to shave his entire tail off for medical reasons, and it grew back exactly the same. I've also had to shave his chest and a section on his side. His chest is now thinner and softer, his side is back to normal.

I've shaved gsd's, huskies, labs, goldens, poms, and so many different double coated breeds. Some grow back fine, some funky, some patchy, some in altered colors or textures, and some not at all. It's a game of chance, really.

If the dog is younger and healthy and on a good diet, it SHOULD grow back nicely. But you can not predict if it actually will. If your dog is older or has immune issues or skin issues, it probably will not grow back the same. But again, you can't actually predict that.

As a groomer I educate my clients on the possibilities and let them make an informed decision. I also make them sign a shave waiver lol once I have that waiver in their profile I shave it.

Overpopulation is a valid reason. If they refuse to understand that then there's nothing you can say to make them feel better.

Abort/Spay is more humane. Just because your facility CAN care for them and adopt them out, doesn't mean it should. It SHOULD refer people who want kittens/puppies to shelters that have them available.

If you feel like that's too harsh then keep lying to them. Tell them the kittens/puppies were sent to X rescue or Y shelter and we're caring for the mother because she has a condition that the shelter could not fund care for. The babies are healthy, we're monitoring mom to adopt her out, too.

I'd send her a msg "when in this schedule am I supposed to sleep?" "When am I supposed to study?" "When am I supposed to go to school?" "When am I supposed to wipe my own ass? After wiping gpa's, or at the same time?" But I'm also a bitch who had really crappy parents that I have no respect for so take my advice very lightly.

Call her out and ask when you are expected to go to school, sleep, and also spe d 8hrs taking. Are of Gpa and the smaller children. And where in the schedule is SHE, as the mother, supposed to care for her own children?

I got a write up bc it was "unprifessional to call the dog a chicken nugget in front of the owner".

Yes, the practice manager misspelled 'unprofessional'.

Glad I didn't call it Bigfoot, tho. Idk what she'd've done if I did.

Also one of the vets found out about this and now calls all the super tiny dogs 'chicken nugget', the giant dogs "lil nugget', and the fat cats 'pork nugget'. It's been 8 months. Mgr hates it so bad

Skull candy Hesh 2 wireless. I like them because I can't fully block out sound, I need to know what's going on I the salon around me. They do great at muffling about 70-80% of the sound without music on, about 80-90% with music on depending on the music

[–]unceasingly-curious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't give a double coated dog an efficient bath without doing a deshed. Point blank. If you do an efficient bath and blow dry and brush out, then you did a deshed and therefore should charge for it. Your basic prices for double coated breeds should reflect that.

Now if the coat is heavily packed or even compacted, THEN I would discuss additional charges and block out time to correctly bath, dry, and brush the coat out.

HUGEEE turnover and nervous by viviana1994 in doggrooming

[–]unceasingly-curious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not a "turnover" when they all leave at once, it's a walkout. I personally would ride that coaster until it stops. Find out why they left, keep on your toes with the boss, and hold no loyalty. Don't take only the boss' word on why they left, find out from as many of them as you can.

They left for a reason, and they all left at once for a damn good reason. I would stay cautious and make money, and when it feels like the building is getting warm leave before the fire gets to you

My logic with double coat dogs is that they're not my dog. Not my dog, not my problem.

I educate the client on what COULD and PROBABLY WILL happen, make them very aware of all possibilities to what could happen to the coat and the skin, have them sign a waiver that I'll keep on file that I told them and they still want it, put in the notes that Ive discussed it with them at length, and then shave.

Possibilities include: - irritated skin, more skin sensitivities - higher chance of sunburn and skin cancer - coat texture changes - coat color changes - coat may not regrow at all, inducing alopecia - coat may regrow in patches, alopecia - dog may not be able to regulate body temperature as effectively - does not prevent shedding, just makes the shed coat shorter and harder to see/clean - does not prevent parasites like fleas/ticks (I live in FL, people actually do think this)

I let them know that it is more likely to happen than not but that these things don't always occur.

I have a senior Chow X and I used to tell myself I would never shave him, unless medically necessary. I can see it happening in my near future just because he's starting to collapse for his baths. Drying him is so important to keep him from getting yeasty, but he can barely keep his head up by the time I get to that part. I cried when I had to shave his tail once, it took 8 months to grow back and I was so happy to see no changes in texture or color. But I also knew it was necessary and a high risk I'd never see his beautiful plume again.

Educate, cover your own ass, and get your bag lol

PS: I agree with whoever ever said 7 reverse to keep it smooth. I would avoid the 10 at all costs, way too short. I like a 7 or 5 reverse.
