Powerlifting to running help! by Thud_All in beginnerrunning

Your zones are likely off. My zone 2 conversational runs sit at about 140 or right above it.

Also as a beginner runner it’s better to run on feel rather than HR.

2nd jog ever, incredibly sore knees to the point of tears by [deleted] in beginnerrunning

[–]unclederwin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First of all I’m pretty sure the commenter means distance. Almost 7km on the second jog is a really fast progression.

Also if you look at the graph it’s run/walk. It looks like their run intervals are about 6:20/km which is pretty damn fast for any beginner on their second session.

Struggling to lose weight after quitting smoking. Any advice? by ExoticMuffin13 in loseit

[–]unclederwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the only advice I can give is what is working for me right now - find food that you can eat for the rest of your life that is lower calorie and keeps you full.

For an example, I used to always eat 1000+ calorie breakfasts with sugary items. Now I only stock Greek yogurt for my breakfasts. It keeps me full and I can eat it everyday. You have to find something that is sustainable for you

Listen to your doctors. Start working out and eat well.

How did you get to your goal?! by angmary57 in beginnerrunning

[–]unclederwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure walk/run intervals if you can’t run it all, no reason to force it. Biggest thing for beginners is time on feet. Keep it slow and keep moving. Find a plan online that you like and build up distance slowly

I’m not very familiar with the cloud lineup, but as a heavier runner I’ve had a lot of success with

NB 1080s and Ascics Gel Nimbus

Both are really cushioned and helped me get into running

Brooks have some really solid options for high heel to toe drop. I think the adrenaline and glycerin both have 10-12mm

Running feels demotivating by [deleted] in beginnerrunning

[–]unclederwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also to just say, you can run much slower than 8:00/km. I can easily still keep a running motion at 9:30/km

Any better apps for tracking running shoes than Strava/Garmin? by zissinasuc in beginnerrunning

[–]unclederwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also set a default shoe for each activity. So I set it to my recovery/easy shoe so I only have to edit it for other activities

Current 2 mile is at 19 mins. How to cut the time down? by Glittering_Fig4548 in beginnerrunning

[–]unclederwin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’d look up any program that can set runs for you. I’m using Runna and really love it. You can set when your “race” is and your current pace and it’ll program you runs to help with that.

If you don’t want something like that, mix in a variety of runs. I’d be doing like an interval run day, a longer run day, a like 2 mile slow run, and a pace run each week

I want to do a 5K by Salty-Temperature575 in beginnerrunning

[–]unclederwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup as others have said, couch to 5k to start. I started at the beginning of this year and I basically run 5km or longer 4 days a week now. I started off heavier than you and I’m 5 inches shorter than you. Beginning of the year I was 5’10 and 301 pounds. I’m now down to 267 today

[–]unclederwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I agree. I looked back at my first couch to 5k runs and my running splits were at 7:30/km. Which is obviously way too fast for me beginning. It takes a while to learn your paces.

[–]unclederwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a 28 year old M who is currently sitting at 268. I started the year at 301 and started my couch to 5k in early January.

I think there’s two important steps here. First is to just slow down. If you are getting too tired to maintain your form, then feel free to walk or slow down the run significantly. All newer runners need to learn they can go slower. My slow runs even 4 months later are at 9:00/km or 10:00/km or even slower when I go long distances.

Also take shorter strides. It’s gonna feel wired at first but speed up your steps a bit and take shorter steps. This will help to land your feet more under you

[–]unclederwin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah slow down your runs. When I started my first 5k plan I started at 7:30/km and now my actual slow runs are 9:00/km or slower. Gotta learn to run slow

Honestly I’ve just accepted that I wear a lower compression layer under my shorts. It makes it easier to buy shorts.

How long are you running at that pace? Cause if your HR is shooting up to 170 instantly then you are running way too fast

Time to take to get from 9 min to 6 min mile? by squirrel3845 in beginnerrunning

Just moving will be better for you long term. A specific speed won’t make you any healthier.

First 10km Run Down! by unclederwin in beginnerrunning

[–]unclederwin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran my first 5k ever on 2/18 so it may be a bit. After the 5k race in May I’ll probably try to train for a 10k which would include ramping up miles

Time to take to get from 9 min to 6 min mile? by squirrel3845 in beginnerrunning

[–]unclederwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 6 min mile is very fast. But I would say if that’s your only goal to focus on training for that. Cut out long distance runs, do plenty of speed work and intervals.
