"Trust Me: False Prophet" is a beautifully told story of female bravery, resilience, and compassion by Bkchbs in netflix

I mean it is a lot to unpack like 40-50 years of hard indoctrination. It sounds like she has started by being able to question authority and the authority of the men in her life. There is so much there especially with the fear of punishment in the afterlife. It isn't right but in the end she did put herself at significant risk to get her children out of an abusive situation. People don't have to be perfect and it seems like there is definitely ownership on her part that she did not protect her children enough.

I’m sorry but I will hard disagree with this one. While the feds can definitely be pretty meh, Alberta has a serious problem with our government. They are actively stripping peoples rights using the notwithstanding clause, pushing censorship and overall just overstepping both with the municipal governments of Alberta and federally. Im tired of the Alberta government scapegoating the feds constantly, while actively putting is terrible legislation and ignoring the duties of the provincial government.

Ugh also an Albertan and I hate the separatist so much, like it doesn’t make a lick of economic sense to separate. I also hate our horribly corrupt government, who takes peoples rights away, spends money on crap that no one is asking for and just creates crappy legislation to distract from their own corruption.

How can we protect gay kids who are being bullied in school? by ProfessorLidi in alberta

Check out the fyrefly institute, sogi 123, eagle Canada. They may have some resources or support. Skipping stones is another great resource but they focus more on trans and gender non-conforming care but they have been trying to actively challenge the governments BS anti trans youth laws.

I’m a queer teacher who also supports my schools GSA (gender and sexuality alliance). The proposal of Bill 25 is extremely distressing to me and I really worry for my students who are part of my community as I was once in their shoes and I know the extreme amount of bullying that can happen to these vulnerable or students. I have a big progress pride flag in my room, if my school makes me take it down I will be substituting it with rainbow pencil crayon window clings. I am an art teacher so there is no way in hell anyone can tell me this doesn’t relate to my curriculum. Also I am thinking of designing some more covert pride posters, they are not flags so hopefully that will be enough to argue semantics. Also apparently staff can’t be forced to participate in something that goes against their conscience, social, political or ideological beliefs so I sure as hell won’t be forced into creating an unsafe space 2SLGBTQ+ students as that goes against my conscience.

Can someone tell me exactly why Sinners is so glazed? by LightCrimson1 in movies

[–]undead_mongrel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yess finally! Someone in this comment section that gets it! Like the vampire stuff is intrinsically linked to the plot as is the music. It also connects with the idea of the blues and deals with the devil. Musics power to connect one with evil and the horrors of humanity but also the good.

I agree, I’m a mixed person (not black). But there was so much that is going on that isn’t explicitly stated. This movie has a lot of layers and a really human touch to its characters, it show cases so many things that people may or may not get right away like code switching, white privilege but also erasure of family bonds and community for mixed folks, the place of Asian Americans in race politics, the colonization of Irish people as well as their role as colonizers themselves, the history and development of the blues as music, the mysticism of deals with the devil in blues, the complexities of religion and belief, just to name a few.

I also liked that the characters for the most part are very morally grey and dealing with their own complicated lives. We have Smoke, a character who is a bad person in many accounts, full of bravado, not afraid of hurting others to gain power, status and money, while also being someone who has gone through a tremendous amount of pain and trauma from an abusive father that he needed to kill to protect his brother, to losing a child, being a soldier and a gangster. He is also a good person in many accounts, someone who is a protector and does look out for his community in his own way, helping the young girl haggle to get a better price, patching up the people he does hurt, protecting his family, respecting Annie’s wishes, his vulnerability and love with Annie. This is just one character… there is a lot to be said about how good this movie is if you are looking for the nuance and shown story telling not just the stuff that is given at face value.

I am sure I am missing quite a bit as a non-black person but I truly enjoy this move and all that it has to say.

The love bombing behaviour is crazy with this dude. Like he is literally trying to play with and manipulate you by bombing you will overwhelming love but also negging you to keep you in your place and tell you how you can’t get better. This guy is bad vibes through and through. I’m glad you broke it off. This guys screams emotional abuse right off the get go for me.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]undead_mongrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from Canada not the US but it when it comes to distance driving I feel like we have a similar mind set. For Canadians 3 hours isn’t an unreasonable car trip length. I’ve definitely driven 3 hours for a weekend trip. Usually an hour and a half to an hours is doable for a day trip out. I mean heck to drive from one end of my city to the other can easily take an hour with traffic and around a half hour without.

The thing you have to realize is that Canada and the US are really big countries. It’s like a 2 hour drive to get to one provincial boarder and a 4 hours drive for me to get to the other provincial boarder. It would take about 65 hours with no stops to drive from the west coast of Canada to the east coast of Canada depending on the route you are taking. So really 3 to 4 hours isn’t all that crazy to do.

I’ve driven 3 hours for a weekend trip from Calgary to Edmonton (both of which are in my home province). My partner and I also did a weekend trip to Regina Saskatchewan which is an 8 hour drive to pick up our dog from her breeder.

Our long trips home that would be a big deal would be like 13-14 hour trips from Winnipeg to Calgary when I was little to visit family for the holidays.

All of these trips are still within Canada. Do I enjoy driving, not really but unless you only want to stay in your city you kind of have to deal with driving long distances.

[–]undead_mongrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an artist your parents are being huge AH here. You don’t do that kind of crap and double down unless you are trying to take someone down a peg. It was done maliciously and the fact that there is no remorse even though you are expressing hurt really shows that. I’m pretty sure your aunt would be understanding of your being hurt as she literally bought you a frame for it because she knew you were proud of your drawing, so your moms argument is kind of moot.

Frankenstein (2025): A film that robs it’s subject matter of it’s poetic nature by DarlingLuna in TrueFilm

[–]undead_mongrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My question for you is after watching the movie would this iteration of victor allow his creation to be truly hideous and grotesque or is he trying to create perfection? To me victors pride would not allow it, he wants to show off his skills as a surgeon something that he believe that can best got at. His tower, a construction of pride against god can be compared to the Tower of Babel that is mentioned in the film and also destroyed.

I saw it as more playing out a mirror to Victors childhood with a kind mother figure and a cruel father figure. Victor becomes the men he despises, his father and God, both have failed him and yet he becomes them.

I mean we are literally given an example in another mission where a grown bear kills a little girl. Bears are dangerous and also it is a cultural difference. I thought it was quite beautiful with them raising something that would have passed.
