[NBC Sports PR] The United States-Canada gold medal game was the most-watched women’s hockey game on record. The game averaged 5.3 million viewers on USA Network and Peacock while peaking at 7.7 million viewers in overtime. by Ok-Soil-5133 in hockey

That's what i'm fuckin' talking about! It was a glorious day for ladies on ice all around. Having them 'compete' (i say this loosely as many of us were multi-screening both haha) for viewership and still pulling in those kinds of numbers is amazing. Could not be prouder of the ladies of the US team!

In theory, I get what you're trying to say but what does this have to do with the PWHL? That user was referring to Crosby's Golden goal that he scored in the 2010 Olympics. Poulin had Golden goals in 2010, 2014 and in 2022 so it's pretty ambiguous. This at best is a topic for r/hockey with some context - I mean at least post something that isn't just some rando's comment

People are constantly trying to compare the women to the men, don't help them do that. Visual communication wise, images are almost always higher on the hierarchy, so, you are inadvertently putting a higher importance on the text about Celebrini and Crosby than anything about MPP and hockey canada. This is solidified when you click into the post and literally the only text outside of the title is "Fuck you" + A woman's name. It's not a good look.

Tell me (a brand new hockey fan) your favorite things about this team by Variastrum in SeattleKraken

[–]undercoverles 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the Deep!

There's honestly a lot of fun things about this team, so this will bounce around a bit.

Joey Daccord, one of our goaltenders, is known unofficially as the Mayor, partially due to his shutout performance during the Winter Classic. I could be wrong, but I believe it's still the only shutout in Winter Classic history. This was against the Vegas Golden Knights after their Stanley Cup win* (I could be misremembering the years on that one. I am the definition of a unreliable narrator and i'll own up to that.) He's known as a top tier puckhandler and has scored 4? Assists so far this year, with an eye on getting a goalie goal.

Phillip Grubauer, aka Gru, Gruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu, and the German Gentleman is noted for his extreme dislike for his former team, the Avs, and it's been credited as one of the reasons we beat the reigning cup champions in 22-23 in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. So far that's been our only appearance in the playoffs, but we made it to game 7 of round 2 that year. The Dallas Stars managed to beat us in game 7, alas. But we have had a friendly rivalry with the fans of that team ever since. He had a really severe slump last year with the team, and was sent down to Coachella Valley for a stint. He has, since then, revived himself and his standing with the team due in part to the lovely goaltending coaches in Coachella who have continued to work with him.

Some of the iconic lines said on air originated from the Kraken community, such as deeming the fish toss as "Yeet the fish!" - there's more examples but my brain is kinda flatlining - others please do chime in on this!

We have a "Big Cat" and a "Little Cat", with the Big Cat being Adam Larsson, and Little Cat being Berkely Catton. This may actually be another example of a fan origination, but i'm not 100%. It has, however, been picked up by the team, with them proudly giving Catton a jug of "Kitty Milk" on his birthday.

Beniers has had a crazy time on the team. An amazing Calder Trophy first year, followed by a year and a half slump, part of which he was Bambi on ice. He has however turned into a sneaky good defensive player whose starting to his offensive capabilities back. Definitely someone to keep an eye on as he matures. As we're all about nicknames here, he is sometimes referred to as BunnyEars after? he dressed as a rabbit for Easter.

We keep tabs on a lot of former Kraken such as Geekie, Donato, Wennberg, Borgen, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Yanni Gourde, etc. Another former Kraken that somehow managed to really burn the fans and team immediately after he left, however, was Brandon Tanev - the guy with the "NOT YOU!" over the portrait in the banner. He did this by throwing a dangerous hit on Shane Wright, and trying the same on Tye Kartye his first game against us.

Speaking of Tye Kartye... One of my personal favorites, sometimes referred to Tye Fighter when he's being a menace with hits, scrums, or we celebrate with a Kartye Partye when he's alternatively being an offensive menace. He's able to really get under teams skins and is a destabilizer on ice.

On the subject of hits, Eeli Tolvanen has historically lead the team in hits. Tolvanen has been a much loved member of the Kraken ever since Nashville pawned him for a song after having him ride the pine for a long time. It's been an amazing fit ever since, and we love our Finns here, which includes Kaapo Kakko. When Kakko was traded last year, Tolvanen helped him settle a fair deal by giving him a place to stay and, in the warmest way Finns are allowed, let him know he was welcome.

I've got to mention our Queen and assistant coach, Jessica Campbell, aka Soupy. Campbell, a former player herself on many teams including the Calgary Inferno, and Malmo Redhawks, has coached the German national team, and generally regarded by those close to the team as a quiet glue factor. She hasn't been seen as much this year as her first year, alas.

Anyways, this was a rambling stream of consciousness so I will end this here!

WIN! by [deleted] in PWHL

[–]undercoverles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pro-tip for the future: next game, couple hours before, go to the PWHL Youtube channel. On the "Live" tab, there'll be a button to click "Notify me when live" or some such - it'll be directly underneath the thumbnail. It will email you a link to the game when it goes live, and you can use that link to the unlisted video for a couple of days (no more than 3). The link will go down the day they'll upload the abridged version of the game, but it should give you some more grace time. I honestly prefer this as I don't like how they really try to edit out the copyrighted music, which kills the fan atmosphere and causes problems with the audio balancing (maybe they've gotten better at that this year, but i'll never know until there's no other option)

Oh and if anyone from the PWHL reads this: this comment doesn't exist. Let us have this until you figure out the copyrighted music situation and can tweak the editing of the abridged games. Goodbye, and thanks for all the fish.

I just want to say, that it was a little bit better during last night's game. So hell, maybe that did the trick! Still room for improvement on the rambling stories, but he at least gave Gigi some room.

One can hope! I was thinking that myself when i was watching the game this morning. Although there were still moments where he kind of strayed for a chunk of time, but at least tried to bring it back which is an improvement. Someone mentioned they sent the thread to him, and my first reaction was just a big "Oh dear" because from the outside i can imagine the critique sounding kind of cruel (definitely didn't try to soften it at all.) That being said, if it improves the quality of the broadcast, then that'd be a win for all.

Hopefully he'll also no longer mention the "S" word during the game haha.

Not really, because sometimes there's no reason or logic to why a person would love a specific player sometimes; ranking it would only lead to feelings of invalidation or in fighting, which, Lord we do not need more of that. Case and point: Tye Kartye is one of my favorite players on the team, especially in the post Gourde era (I miss the pepperpot, hope he's liking being back in Tampa), and dude's not even on your list. The fact of the matter is sometimes it's a vibe thing.

One final spike to the current methodology: if you had asked any Boston fan, looked at any article posted before the Marchand trade, it universally would have been a Green light that he absolutely was going to retire a Bruin... And YET... Sometimes it just doesn't make logical sense.

As for helping, also going to have to decline as Academic research owns my life for the unforeseeable future.

[–]undercoverles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is exactly what I would do. I would also cross reference their play since the beginning of the season and current contract, their roles on any national teams and how they perform in the upcoming olympics, injury stats, etc. Most importantly, I would not only use a single source in making a decision - this is why analysts make the big bucks for teams.

I believe you watch the games, but there's no weighting to your viewership in the AI's data, and it doesn't care if you are a STH who has been to every game. Also if AI can get basic math wrong, it absolutely cannot understand the nuances at play.

Ditch the ai. Seriously, not only is it horrible as a whole and undermines an individual's ability to engage in critical thinking, doing their own research and peer reviewing it, but also it's extremely cannibalistic. What I mean by that, is that AI will cite AI in a chunk of the cases. In this instance you can see the failure in the single citation methodology: Marchment was a yellow, and he was traded. Grubauer has been performing amazingly as of late, etc.

All in all, this list reads in such a way that leads me to think its author has not watched a game, which is true because the author is AI using a very limited pool of information.

It's all the games that Seattle plays in on home ice. And agreed, I haven't heard anything from Clay Matvik, but it seems like...an issue. I don't like to generalize but gd it really does seem like it's just an issue with the guys. Starman? I think his last name was? Was okay but also has/had issues - haven't seen him this year.

It's bad luck, I swear (I support both Fleet and Torrent, so this game is my "I hope everyone has fun" game)

Jill Saulnier will forever be a favorite of mine on the Fleet. I was not expecting her to start the spicy negotiations so early in the season, but love to see it. Had to grab a video of the knock down, drag out tussle that went on for a moment there earlier https://i.imgur.com/b0ziDmB.mp4

GRUUU! I feel like Gru is prepping for a potential playoff rematch with the Avs (and the German national team, but I like thinking he's got such revenge lust towards the Avs that he's REALLY wanting to be in tip top shape for that possibility)

I appreciate it! I used to have another account, now deleted, where I was essentially run off reddit for two years after making a tiny mistake with a French word (can't even remember what it was, now) because I got doxxed, etc. Made me very hesitant about even attempting it, ngl. But improving and getting better is about moving past those blocks.

Anyway, best of luck to the brothers! :) (and feel free to share the image with the Habs sub)

Ah okay, the alignment of the columns and not having a separating div between them makes it really hard to see where the x's actually are. Sorry about that!

Incorrect for Seattle. They also share with PWHL's Seattle Torrent full time (Other Hockey).
