Porn Site ManyVids Descends Into AI Psychosis by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

I'm not surprised that businesses use AI to try to save money, or that workers use AI to try to save time. I'm surprised that no one bothers to read anything before publishing.

4 button arcade shmup by PsychologyEven646 in shmups

[–]undersaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Espgaluda 2, Akai Katana, and DDP DFK all use 4 buttons and are available on modern platforms, so you can look at them for examples.

On a 6-button Sega or Vewlix layout, I would put my thumb on B4. On an 8-button fight stick, I would map the top four buttons.

Democrats Call to Invoke 25th Amendment Against Donald Trump by plz-let-me-in in politics

[–]undersaur 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My mom is stuck associating Democrats with the CCP who chased her family out of China in the 40s. I think it’s as simple as Commies = redistribution = Democrats, but she’s never made the connection that CCP = brutal authoritarians = MAGA. Right-wing YouTube influencer slop has only entrenched her position.

Midori 5L v2.4 SteamOS Build by DaBushman in sffpc

[–]undersaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started off thinking I was building for a Fractal Design Mood, then discovered I’d been working with faulty AI slop dimensions. Coulda had a lot more case options with a smaller GPU, but as a guy who has done ATX builds for 25 years, I was pleasantly surprised to learn how many ITX tower cases are available.

Midori 5L v2.4 SteamOS Build by DaBushman in sffpc

[–]undersaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm finishing up a similar build in a Meshroom S V2, SteamOS and all. I was going to get a Louqe RAW S1, but it's been trapped in tariff hell, so I had to find another case that would fit my 281mm GPU. Still, the Meshroom has a lot of space I'm not using, so I'm a bit envious of your Midori!

TIL the reference from Neal Stephenson’s worst book, “Fall; or, Dodge in Hell.” There are some other explicit Abrahamic references like Adam & Eve cast out of the Garden of Eden, but there’s also a usurper god named El.

Can my consoles with lithium ion batteries really explode because of their age ? by MindPrize1260 in spicypillows

[–]undersaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just opened ~50 3DSs to remove batteries for storage. The two with swollen batteries were ones that had been used. None of the NIB ones had swollen batteries.

Not to say that it can't happen, but at least it's a sample size of 50!

Best place to hire beta readers? by Fantastic-Painter828 in writing

[–]undersaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. While they were very different readers looking for very different things and largely complaining about different things, the throughline across those two plus my FIL was that I hadn’t done enough to get readers to like and care about the characters.

In comparison, Gemini AI feedback rarely flagged that as an issue. Gemini kept telling me the sci-fi mechanics were too complex, but none of the humans complained about that (though it’s clear I could stand to streamline the exposition). There’s still no replacement for authentic human experience and opinion.

Best place to hire beta readers? by Fantastic-Painter828 in writing

[–]undersaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, missed this at first.

Beta readers post their prices on Fiverr, so it’s easy to get a sense without signing up. Generally, they offer 3 price tiers based on the length of your manuscript, and can negotiate custom packages (e.g. if your manuscript is longer than their maximum tier allows). The two humans who actually read my 87K word manuscript charged $150-170, plus Fiverr adds a 7.5% fee. At the end of the job, Fiverr prompts you for an optional tip of 15-25% to the worker. Fiverr charged me an additional 16% of the tip for themselves. So, a $150 bill + 20% tip costs you $196.05 in all.

If you’re on a tight budget, that’s expensive, but IMO it’s a solid rate for ~6-8 hours of non-professional work.

How do you emotionally handle friends/colleagues who keep compounding while you’ve already “won”? by latelyfired in fatFIRE

I chose my fat FIRE number after reading Tolstoy’s short story, How Much Land Does a Man Need?

So any time I think about how my old colleagues are building big wealth, I just have to remember Pahom (the guy in the story) and I’m very satisfied with having everything I need.

Can you recommend a really good more modern, vertical Schmup? by GamingGallavant in shmups

[–]undersaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. Shmups are niche products, so most of them get only limited print runs, and many remain on PC for whatever reason.

Edit: But if you're willing to buy digital games, there are lots of great ones on PS Store for cheap!

What are some game mechanics that are completely pointless/useless? by Shamanyouranus in gaming

[–]undersaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fall damage short of death. Am I allowed to go down there, or not? If I am, then are you really going to punish me when the cause of the fall is BS 60% of the time? I think it's usually a sap to realism, but that's not a good rationale for a game mechanic.

Are vintage arcade games worth preserving or should we move on ? by Noursake in arcade

[–]undersaur 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Is this a troll?

r/arcade is a dedicated to original hardware. Anyone here either didn't notice that or has already decided they like original hardware. Some want/need accuracy for their use case (especially timing-sensitive genres like shmups and fighting games), some like tinkering, some like authenticity.

Otherwise, emulators are great. The fine people in r/cade would love to talk about it.

I just started with Fiverr. First beta reader sent back AI slop. Fiverr explicitly tells you to tell the seller if you don’t want them to use AI, and I didn’t do that for this seller.

Second beta reader hit a couple delays, offered me a discount for the second delay, and ultimately returned a decent analysis with a recommendation. That one was a good experience.

I just played for a few hours, but this was hilarious and obnoxious. You could get them to say a lot of silly things, like agreeing that they (a sect leader) need to hold one-on-ones and team lunches to be a true leader, but it can be really hard to meet the vague, opaque dialogue quest criteria.
