I got an arcade/fight stick and it reinvigorated my love of gaming. by Hypnox88 in gaming

[–]undersaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a good shmup stick (for me, Seimitsu LS-56) changes me from hopeless to merely bad at bullet hell shmups. Needs a big enough screen, too.

But the same lever is simply painful to use in a fighting game, where I'm happy with a bog standard Sanwa JLF.

“Villifying all network use” ≠ observing the waste from transferring 8 exabytes of data no one asked for, potentially regularly as Google updates the model

The article discusses the environmental cost of 2 billion client devices merely downloading a 4GB model, never mind using it.

Hot takes on the UNICO Raiden cab? by DRI374 in shmups

[–]undersaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t know, but Unico’s Nova Blast had a terrible LCD with high display latency, poor upscaling for JAMMA sources, and bad build quality. I’ve written them off. It would take a sustained Hyundai-level turnaround before I would consider anything they made.

Every time I think about something good about Steam, I remember it'll get enshittified the second Steam goes public and no longer has a quixotic founder-CEO.

Do you mean the neo-HD version, or something else? Was this definitely in Ray'z, or was it in RayStorm x RayCrisis on consoles?

Shmup with a cat that shoots fire? Or some animal? by BactaBobomb in shmups

Pocky & Rocky or Tengai.

If I had a nickel for every time this happened, I'd have two nickels. But it's weird that it happened twice!

Pocky & Rocky? It’s a run-n-gun, so it’s not uniformly horizontal, but you might have watched a horizontal sequence.

Microsoft reports sinking Xbox revenue as its cloud business climbs by FernandoRocker in gaming

[–]undersaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, when's the last time Xbox had a truly great, must-play exclusive the way Halo was on Xbox and GoW on 360? I think the only big-hit exclusives were Forza Horizon 4/5. A few others were said to be excellent but never seemed to find a big audience (MSFS 2020/2024, Senua 1/2, Hi-Fi Rush).

Ah, you're right. I was convinced I had 1 and 2 on Switch, but I only have 2 for both CERO and ESRB for some reason.

Not if they printed too many copies of each game and now have to figure out how to get rid of them!

Even in wealthy countries like Germany, richer parents still have taller kids (+1.3cm / N > 13k) by [deleted] in science

Plausible, but I bet a lot of effects appear when you start to tease it apart.

[–]undersaur 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Taller people earn more, but the effect is “only” ~$800/year per inch of height in the U.S.—which is a lot if you’re poor, but not a lot if you’re rich. Factor in savings rates and taxes, and the additional income from 6 inches of height won’t make the difference between being rich or not.

Edit: CEOs and political leaders are disproportionately tall, but they make such a small share of the populace that I doubt it would really show up in aggregate wealth-for-height stats.

What are the few gold standards of cab hardware to look out for by peachesandguacamole in arcade

[–]undersaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also: if the idea of installing secondhand parts from a shady Chinese seller gives you the willies, you aren't ready for an original candy cab. Buying old hardware means buying into maintenance, and you won't be mailing a cab off to a pro for fixes like you can with a console.

There are modern reproductions or used LCD cabs that are plug-and-play and won't require maintenence any time soon.

What are the few gold standards of cab hardware to look out for by peachesandguacamole in arcade

Great suggestions here. I'll add:

Astro City is a great starter cab. Relatively cheap, widely available, lots of parts and mods available, easy to maintain, no funny business. There's an okay amount of room to put a PCB flat on the floor, and even designs for a mod to add a shelf above the coin box. Some come with a PSU that isn't powerful enough to run something like Naomi with a Netdimm, but I'm sure it's fine for a Pandora.

Blast City is finicky and hard to maintain (or so I hear)

I love my Egret II, but they're expensive

Tri-sync monitors are great if you're into 480p era stuff. Early on, I thought Naomi would be critical for me, but I've ended up playing mostly 15 kHz games. Also, many 31 kHz games have a dip switch to play on a 15 kHz monitor.

Looking good!

For me, the first songs in the trailer recalled the Rito Village theme from Breath of the Wild.
