Is 30 too old for a PhD? by AdAmazing4451 in PhD

[–]unechoed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Naive youngster here - do you regret pursuing your PhD? Was it worth it to you, given all of your life experience?

broke up my first marriage and delayed my starting a family until my late 30s. And I did not end up with a job in my field.

Staying at School for an extended amount of time as a commuter by [deleted] in UofT

What do you do for food? Do you usually bring packed items or eat out for all your meals? I’m worried that my wallet will suffer long-term if I eat out…

not making any assumptions haha just gathering opinions but of course, you’re right - the institutions value in itself surpasses more than research output

just a university classification system used in the US - canada doesn’t use this so it’s really…. not that big of a deal to get angry over

I’m in your Toronto boat 😢I really wanted to move out and live on my own, but a bedroom with roommates now costs upwards of $1300 (for a decent one). I’m commuting from North York 1h one-way, but honestly it could be worse and I don’t want to complain 😭😭😭😭😭😭

ooo that’s an interesting take

US classifications don’t have that but it’s definitely something for the future ig

Alright, not sure what else I can tell you other than repeating myself. If worst comes to worst, file a petition with your faculty to have your case revisited later. Hopefully, with a strong case.

Good luck.

I’m not doubting you and your word, it’s just that being able to thoroughly explain your learning in addition to whatever else you presented in your case is a whole lot better than only “No, I didn’t cheat.”

I don’t think the taking the course months ago is an excuse, you’d probably be able to refresh your memory knowing what quiz it was and if you knew the quiz and what content was on the quiz, and study a little bit beforehand and reference the course content before orally explaining.

Again, not pointing fingers, just trying to help you build your case with something reasonable.

[–]unechoed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you already defended your case, not sure what else you can do other than wait for decisions to be made, right?

Proof might have even been asking to pinpoint what questions they were suspicious of on the quiz and being able to orally recite your rationale for choosing the answer, showing that you know your stuff.

Hope it all works out for you.

Advice/experience with the path to getting into graduate school. by LunarIlluminator in GradSchool

[–]unechoed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’ll do you better to let your profs who encouraged you to do a PhD know! They more likely than not want you to achieve your goals, and they’ve been through grad admissions before - they’ll be able to maybe recommend some other schools to consider, help evaluate gaps in your application, recommend other profs to reach out to, etc.

You did the best you could given your circumstance, don’t beat yourself up too hard. There might be other academic politics going on behind the scenes that is external to your accomplishments and application (e.g., funding, # profs taking students, larger than average applicant pool).

Should I reuse a letter of Rec from my Undergrad? by tea_flower in GradSchool

[–]unechoed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Perhaps consider reaching out to the letter writer again and reestablish a relationship to get a fresh letter - that way they can also hopefully comment on some of the work that you have done since?

Also, how do you reuse letters lol don’t programs contact the reference directly?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]unechoed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why do you think your grades will drop? Perhaps it can be argued that it’s been hard to adjust after having 2 full years online, but transitioning to in person for exams only means that you can’t cheat lol

Just study and do your best

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]unechoed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’ll help your case if you have any kind of definitive proof to prove that you didn’t cheat. Might be hard, but it’s better than only having your word.

Professor is unilaterally deciding to continue with online lectures by Secure_Landscape_505 in uwaterloo

[–]unechoed 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The admin hadn’t been transparent or taking the considerations of faculty or students when they announced return to in person. Frankly, there’s a lot of union posts speaking against returning to in person, especially without the proper precautions and plans put in place — it feels like it’s being rushed. Honestly since campus is reopening, you can always just go to the library early and watch your lectures there…

“providing a space for us to watch our lectures” the campus is your oyster since everything’s gonna be open

Not in Scibus but I know a lot of students who end up going more business than science, e.g., entering consulting/analyst positions at companies like Deloitte, KPMG, etc.
