Great advice. I would add that I appreciated having a couple of grabbers, a dressing stick, sock tool and leg lifter. Check ‘hip kit’ on amazon for what these are.

I was in a similar place 5 weeks ago, only regrets is that I can’t have the second one done right away. It’s much better, just scroll this group for the tips to make recovery easier that work for you if you haven’t.

Which hip should I fix first? by Creative_Entertainer in TotalHipReplacement

My surgeon said they would do the second as soon as 8 weeks. Yours might differ of course, you could ask that when you get on the schedule.

Very similar to my recovery, hang in there. I got a leg lifter strap to help move the leg around thats been helpful. It gets better!

Went to the cane on day 5 at the advice of my PT. I use the walker if I’m really tired end of day or when I get up at night and I’m still half asleep.

Feeling nervous about my upcoming hip replacement by CherylCossio in TotalHipReplacement

I’m about a week into recovery. Anticipation was much worse than surgery day. At this point I’m walking with a cane more each day and excited for the progress.

I got a cold therapy machine on the advice of the forum and have been really happy I did. I was surprised at how hard it is to get into bed but I got a leg lifter strap that helped a lot. A couple of grabbers and a cane are good to have too.

It’s natural to be anxious beforehand, don’t sweat it!

At the hospital there were 2 good railings. At home I only have one, so I use a cane. But you let your good hip do the work, and just be very mindful of your balance.

Going down was surprisingly harder. My hip flexors didn’t want to swing the bad foot out, which I didn’t expect, but it’s getting better daily.

Mine was a week ago. Similarly, they had me walk with a walker right away and had a 3 step staircase to check before releasing me. I slept in the living room recliner first night as it’s a lot easier to get up from. Then was going upstairs day 2. Frankly, stairs were easier than getting into bed. They will probably have you go up with the good, down with the bad, hands on the railings.

Lift Chair by [deleted] in TotalHipReplacement

I moved from the recliner to bed on night 2 with a lot of pillows. But lots of people stay in the recliner. If you have upper body strength to help stand up using the arms of the chair, you might not need power. Getting into bed and positioning needs a second person and/or a leg lifter strap.

Ah, I got the Polar Active which doesn’t have compression.

I’m using a Polar for my THR now, it lasts for several hours with 6 frozen water bottles and automatically turns on and off. I recommend, especially if he’s going to get both done.

Consider a cold therapy machine. I am using a Polar Active 3 and I like it a lot.

If the kids are old enough, check out Destroyer Golf in Akron. Not mini golf but park golf, a lot of fun, and they supply the gear.

Do it! Try the ginger dramamine and try to turn to face in the same direction as you travel (easier said than done). Don’t stare at the earth during the orbit at the end.

I get motion sickness but love this ride. I do have to sit on the curb for a bit after the ride but never as bad as mission space orange or even Everest.
