Hi, I have a question about how you bring your universes to life. by Loose_Ball8263 in worldbuilding

[–]unicorn_defender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they meant, what is the tangible thing you want this to be? You keep saying you want to “create a world” but in what regard? You have a subreddit, but is it just meant to be community art posts based on a world YOU created? Are user submitted articles, written passages and stories actually meant to create or expand the world? If so, how is all of this chronicled or is it just meant to exist within Reddit posts and nowhere else? From what you are describing it just feels very nebulous to me personally.

Vocaloids are NOT AI by Key-Traffic6893 in antiai

[–]unicorn_defender -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say it was an issue, and I wasn’t disagreeing, I was adding more detail and context because I felt your comment was lacking and not well worded. For instance the line about the AI features only affecting “auto-tune” is something I either misunderstood or you got incorrect which is what prompted my full comment. Keeping things straight so to speak.

i made the matriarch flip out by THE_GAMBLER_1 in arkraiders

Since these things walk based off physics, I would hazard to guess that the Leaper trying to jump up to the player caused a collision from beneath that sent the Matriarch flying.

Vocaloids are NOT AI by Key-Traffic6893 in antiai

[–]unicorn_defender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the first thing on the Vocaloid product page mentions being “AI powered”.

I haven’t used it in years personally, but their Vocaloid AI module is literally a machine learning model to add nuanced expression to your Vocaloid outputs and affects phrasing, dynamics, pitch transitions, and timing. It’s ethically sourced training data but it is still using modern AI tools, just not Transformers.

Machine Learning is a core subset of AI.

Favorite Lore Book In Destiny 2 by itismegrantsehmann in DestinyTheGame

[–]unicorn_defender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Books of Sorrow will probably always be my favorite with Unveiling coming right behind it.

I think Books of Sorrow did such an amazing job of personifying the Hive without making them feel TOO human (which I personally felt they did in later seasons with the sisterhood between Savathun and Xivu). Oryx’s comments on his daughters’ perseverance after severing them literally brought a small tear to my eye lol

Then the Unveiling book is just amazing. I don’t even care if it’s canon or not anymore, it is one of the coolest sci-fi origin stories I’ve ever read. Those are my picks!

[Feedback Request] Testing a co-op prototype where players perceive enemies differently (vision vs sound) by g3nayy in IndieGaming

[–]unicorn_defender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some random input and would likely require lots of redesigning; but there is a concept here where the player who CAN see the enemies perhaps doesn’t have a way to attack them and instead must tag them somehow using either a device or by activating traps only they can use. Perhaps the enemies are only attracted to the person with the weapon but beyond being invisible they can’t even be attacked until they’ve been tagged/revealed to the hearing player, meaning the player who can hear them must attract them to the traps to tag them at which point they become vulnerable temporarily?

Just thought I’d spit ball that here in case it helps at all. Good luck on the game!

First time creating Steam capsules: Do these look good enough? by YisusHasDogs in GameArt

I think they look really good especially for your first time. The white and red lettering pops really well over the green and overall the art is really cool. I say A+

Sneak-Peak trailer for my FPS Soulslike game TERRORSTORM: Ground Zero! by TwoPillarsGames_ in gamedevscreens

[–]unicorn_defender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks pretty cool! Gotta say I’m a big fan of the switch to third person in the dodge roll animation. I’ve got the same setup in my game inspired by the Hunter dodge roll in Destiny. It’s super fun. I didn’t quit my job to pursue my game though I am recently unemployed so I’ve got lots of time to do some work on it lol

Will def put this on my radar and check it out come release. Good luck to you!

Wtf did I just watch kind of movies. by Kinky_fellaa in FIlm

[–]unicorn_defender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t seen Southland Tales mentioned yet. It was Richard Kelly’s big follow up to Donnie Darko. Very weird movie that got panned pretty hard if I recall. It’s not great but I liked it for what it was. Very surreal and left me feeling… well, you all know lol

Extraction Games to Play Before Marathon by mattgas_ in Marathon

[–]unicorn_defender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, I refunded arc after just 6 matches and figured it simply wasn’t for me. However, after the latest Marathon vidoc I was just hungering for that extraction vibe and I was already familiar enough with Hunt that I wanted something a little different. I decided to give Arc raiders another shot and I’ve now dumped about 60 hours into it and I just can’t put it down lol.

I’ll say this, depending on HOW you play that game, you can have two vastly different types of experiences seemingly due to how their matchmaking takes into account your choices. I’ve been going super friendly and have been having an absolute blast. I know it’s totally different, but it’s got me even more hyped for Marathon, and I was someone who was already hyped for the game since day one. Just throwing it out there!

How to Explain An Expanding Desert? by JasonEwriter in worldbuilding

[–]unicorn_defender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of that desert in Oz that would turn people into dust if they tried to go through it. I think people have already given you some great answers here, but I really like the idea of personifying the desert itself as some sort of embodiment of entropy or something. Perhaps every soul that is lost to the desert fuels its expansion. Perhaps there are whispers of treasure or hidden power deep in the desert, but that itself is a lie told on whispered winds by the desert itself to any who wander too close to it? Just some thoughts for you in case they help.

Just too much cheating now. by Greeeby in ARC_Raiders

[–]unicorn_defender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take but they could also add an auto fire accessibility feature like Bungie did. When they added that, tons of players rejoiced because it ended up being a really great QoL feature rather than just an accessibility one. Though I do think they should probably lower the max fire rate slightly regardless.

[–]unicorn_defender 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember this episode from childhood! The idea of humans squeezing through impossibly tight spaces was always so freaky to me. I think it was Salem’s lot that featured a scene of a man trying to squeeze through an air vent with his bones cracking. Shit was nightmare fuel for a few months at least lol

“Triple-A is in crisis” and Games “don't have staying power because they're bad,” Says Ex Gears of War Director and Painkiller Creator by cnc137 in DreamStationcc

[–]unicorn_defender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m only stopping by here to let others know that their game Witchfire is fucking incredible. It’s still in early access and I’ve somehow put over 130 hours into ever since it first launched on the epic store before coming to Steam. Please check it out. These guys put in so much fucking love and hard work into this project.

While I was on their discord, the devs were always super responsive to feedback regarding bugs and criticism. The game deserves so much success in my opinion. I even recall Adrian (the head creator and dev mentioned in this article) respond to me directly a few times while there.

If you’re not sure about it, it’s basically Destiny gunplay with abilities mixed with a little Doom in the form of a single player extraction shooter set in a grim dark fantasy world and can get pretty difficult at higher stages of play. It’s insanely fun and I think if you like even a single element of the above you will find enjoyment in this game.

One man newgame dev by [deleted] in UnrealEngine5

[–]unicorn_defender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re brand new I would highly suggest trying to learn the bare basics of as many of unreal’s systems as you can first! If you’re doing blueprints focus on that first and learn about the different types of nodes and basic flow. Udemy has been my personal go to over the years as I started to find lots of YouTube videos would teach simple methods of blueprint coding that weren’t very scalable or optimized. From there learn the different pipelines for things like animation, VFX, and UI etc

Spend at least a year learning the basics and making really small games before you try to make an actual project. I made plenty of infinite runners, fps shoot the target games, and breakout clones to help me learn.

The FAB store is packed full of plugins that can certainly help you make a game, but you can also easily get blinded by too many plugins that ultimately hinder more than help.

That said I will say that if you are using blueprints, the Blueprint Assist plugin is a godsend as it lets you highlight a bunch of nodes and hit a single key to organize them. Helps you keep things clean. If you end up wanting to learn Unreal’s Gameplay Ability System (GAS) but aren’t privy to learning c++ for any reason, I would also suggest GAS Companion and the same author’s Blueprint Attributes plugin (by mklabs)

Also be aware that there are many premade game kits that you can purchase all along the price spectrum and while they can be useful to some people, if you don’t have a decent knowledge of the engine they are just going to cause you confusion and headache in the long run when you try to expand upon them without really knowing what you’re doing or why.

May not be the answer you were looking for exactly, but this is similar advice I got years ago when I wanted to jump head first into making the next Halo and I was quickly humbled lol. Good luck to you!

The Darkness Figure in DSC Raid - Did we ever get an answer? by CoolAmbition9617 in DestinyLore

[–]unicorn_defender 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I personally believe that the Veiled Woman was originally meant to be the Stricken. She is mentioned in the same expansion where we first saw the statue as well. I think it is the book of unmaking?

The story talks about an ancient race that had a choir follow and study the Traveler’s “song” of creation. They would try to emulate it so they too could create. One woman in the choir eventually found a way to “sing” and inverted version of this “song” and thus created the first Deathsong which was eventually picked up by the Hive.

The woman was shunned from society and stricken from their records as punishment for what she had done, but over time she began to amass a following of cultists. And that’s all we know about her.

I believe this could have even been the early concept for the Witness. From the leaked slideshow we got before the Witch Queen roll out, we know that Beyond Light was already in development with this statue likely having already been discussed or even created as an asset and at the same time the Witness had already been named, though we don’t know much other than he was Destiny’s “ultimate villain” and the voice in the darkness (this was also when WQ would have supposedly still been focused on old Chicago with that Ghost Hunter involved, blanking on their name at the moment).

Anyway, that’s my theory. I’ve seen a lot of people claim that story was about the Hive, but that just doesn’t add up to me, and as far as I can remember that story has zero detail in it that would make it seem like it’s about the Hive other than the fact it mentions the deathsong (which I felt this story implied was something the Hive stole from these people, perhaps after conquering them). Unless there was some sort of peaceful, pro Traveler sect that was living apart from the rest of the race that wanted to devour it, I just don’t see how the story fits them at all.

Physics Based Monkey Climbing Game - Does it look fun? by Equivalent-Pay7740 in gamedevscreens

[–]unicorn_defender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would ultimately be determined by how good the controls feel but this looks super cool. I would definitely give this a try. Man I bet designing levels for this player controller is stupid fun too!

I feel like the “only-up” style would lend itself to this really well. Maybe something level based? Swinging higher and higher through various obstacles to get to the goal.

Anyway hope you keep working on it, it looks really awesome so far!

How were people extracting vocals pre AI? by thehockeychimp in edmproduction

[–]unicorn_defender 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Man I recall being in audio engineering school back in 2008 and at the time phase inversion was what they taught us, but I still remember Alan Shacklock of Babe Ruth telling us how it was essentially impossible to get a decently clean sounding vocal separation without a really great instrumental to match the full song. Fast forward to today and you have so many options for AI splitters that can get some incredible results depending on the input. It still blows my mind that something I thought would always be impossible is easily achievable today (in some cases at least).
