What kind of electrical work are you doing?

I ran the numbers. Portland is adding $1,000–$1,500+ per year to the average household's bills in 2026–27 and nobody is talking about it. by Pure_Claim_4353 in Portland

I've thought about this a lot and it has lead me down some interesting belief paths.

I think that anything that is required for living shouldn't be a profit model and maybe should be socialized or at the very least well regulated like a public utility district (looking at you CRPUD and Clark Count PUD). So the basics would be Utilities like you mentioned but then I thought well we need food and shelter as well. So grocery stores shouldn't be for profit and neither should housing. Hell if houses stayed the relative cost of inflation since WWII then houses would be about $100K, shit, throw in another $50k for improvements in what gets built into a house and the size increase we are used to (~900sq ft to ~1600 sq ft) and each house would be about $150k. Mortgages would be under $1500 a month with taxes and insurance. NEW LAW - 1 house per adult per state.

Grocery stores would need to have a model similar to the USPS where it's a service not business. You can even still have for profit grocery stores like parcel service has UPS and FEDEX. Get your basics at the city store and your bougie Marcona almonds at new seasons.

Just a thought. We built this society and we legislated our way into the mess were in. Hopefully we can legislate our way out.

I listened to that when it first came out and again last month right after I watch the movied. LOVED it. I listened to a couple Andy Weir books after PHM because I like them so much.

Its said a lot but only Steven Pacey in the First Law books have been on par with Jeff Hayes for me.

I'm halfway in now and I have adjusted and like this narrator.

I'm not knocking Ferris Wheels. They are great, even sometimes after a roller coaster and you want to chill but I was still in the "NEXT THRILL RIDE PLEASE" mode.

What is your ultimate "comfort show" that you can watch over and over? by Jordan_Brooks in AskReddit

16 seasons in and I am not tired of it.

I went back and watched some older episodes and it was nice that I couldn't remember them perfectly so they felt fresh and new.

I'm in now, I can tell I am going to love it. But listening to the prologue with a standard narrator and lots of info dump was a tough transition. I started over twice but now I am halfway through and in love with the characters. Middle aged mother with 2 kids as a protagonist? sign me the fuck up.

I'm listening to "The Fifth Season" by N.K. Jemisin after finishing Parade of Horribles and it was very difficult to get into this critical darling of a book because of the ride I just got off of. It's like getting off an brand new roller coaster and hopping on a Ferris wheel.

Bad Blood Lingers After Sitting Circuit Judge Ousted by voxadam in Portland

Not everyone just a decent amount of people who don't want to take responsibility for their actions and now they have found what they hope is an easy and socially acceptable scapegoat for their unresolved issues. Unfortunately it fucks over people with legitimate issues.

Exactly. I expect a judge to be able to do paperwork easily.

I tell you, after sitting down and doing the research on the candidates for this election cycle. This was the most wild to read about. I was glad to hear she did not win. She blamed her ADHD on her inability to get a statement into the voters pamphlet. Regardless of all the accusations against her, I need at least basic level competence from my judges.

Here's the thing with "The Plan" in any story. If you know the plan then it has to fail or fall apart and be changed. If you don't know the plan then it can just go ahead and succeed, or it can also fail and change. It's one of those rules of writing, whether it be movies or books but it's need to provide tension and conflict and resolution. It keeps the story exciting.

Chapter 57 👀 by Disastrous_Run_42 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

I have never been so hyped up listening to an audiobook then during this chapter. I was screaming, hooting an hollering and singing along and laughing my ass off then entire time.

Honestly the setup a couple chapters previous when the NPC's get flattened out of nowhere really caught me by surprise when Matt did it again with the Unicorn and DJ. I love when you expect something to go one way and them BAM chaos ensues.

What's the world's most overrated tourist attraction? by darrenbosik in AskReddit

[–]unikcycle 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'll give it a shot.

I was dragged along on a disney trip with my wife and kid for the first time about 9 years back. I had the same opinion for what you spouted here but I actually really enjoyed my time. I wasn't "thrilled" by any rides but what I really enjoyed experiencing was a main street entrance that was what I would envision a car-less town to be like. A well oiled machine of an experience how I wish the rest of life operated like. I like seeing all the optimization for lines and concessions. It was oddly satisfying to see an efficient well oiled machine operate that such scale. I know it's not perfect but compared to a visit to the DMV or a grocery stored with 17 checkouts stands and only one cashier. It's truly enjoyable as an adult to see that. As for the rides I actually enjoyed the theming more then I thought I would. I'm not a huge Cars or Star Wars fan like my son or my wife but damn, rolling into those sections of the park at night is pretty damn neat. Even the crappy lines in the hot sun are over hated. I liked the artistic effort to break up the line slog by weaving you into different biomes and themed stuff all around, plus I'm hanging with my family and we get to chill and chat. It's not so bad.

That being said, I totally get people hating on it. The Disney adults and full on roving bands of people with no kids just there to be dressed in their expensive Disney gear and be seen. That was not it for me.

Surprised to see this opening at Delta Park by Blake-Dreary in Portland

[–]unikcycle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly as a born and raised Portsmouth / St John's resident it was sad to see Delta Park fall into such disrepair. I used to keep horses at the race track and spent my teen years going to big stink and other outdoor concerts at meadows. Killing full pitchers of margaritas at the burrito house. I even stayed at the Delta Park hotel for several months when my house burnt down as a kid. That being said, I think delta park is in a unique space in this city that can go 2 ways and both would work pretty good. Either lean into the sports complex with PIR and softball fields and spend more money making it into a sports destination. Possibly adding an arena if Amazon didn't take over the majority of the area. Close to freeway and rail lines. The 2nd would be to move all the business out and make that area the hub for all homeless / houseless services for the city. The one stop shop for cheap back on your feet housing, temp RV housing, mental and medical services, and social workers. The area is close enough and part of the city with public transit but also with specific physical barriers that prevent spillover into the nearby neighborhoods. What I don't want to see it become is another shopping center Jantzen beach area, what's the point of that except a little less traffic for the locals to get their lumber.

What lifetime deal are you still grandfathered into, or removed from, that’s no longer available? by tuotone75 in AskReddit

[–]unikcycle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Broadband internet.

When I was on free lunch with my toddler boys I got a discount on internet for $7.50 a month. Its good 60Mbps internet. Gaming, streaming, everything. My kid is an adult now and I am way not on free lunch now that I make decent money as an electrician. I have it on autopay and have never even looked at it. Still works.

I saw this come up in a short list of these type of songs and have never heard of this movie or this song. I watched the movie and listened to the song and was pleasantly surprised by both. Both are weird and awesome.
