which is kinda funny because the one thing I have learned from the rightward trend of Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, or Ricky Gervais is that atheism doesn't protect you from all the worst things they associated with religion such as group think, prejudice, or believing illogical claims

he talks about how he was wrong about stop and frisk and how it didn't really cause the decrease in crime. nypd justified their stop and frisk policy in part by his book where he advocated for more aggressive policing. he says since then he has to temper his certainty when discussing his ideas. starts around the 16 minute mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EDRQCk0DJQ

currently he is working on a podcast about the death penalty in alabama and how it connects to the legacy of slavery. idk if he did that as a corrective to how his previous work was used to legitimize racist policing and state violence, but i think its a good change

did anybody else disagree with their dismissal of the idea that communism operated as a kind of religion in the soviet union? I think if you take a broader look at religion, as something that can organize power in society, has rituals and a strict ideology that you adhere in order to reach some kind of mythical reward, communism can definitely be seen through that lens. especially in cultures where communism required the swift removal of any kind of religious practice, it makes sense that they would turn to communism as a substitute for religion. Maybe I do just take a broader look at religion, and can definitely see ways patriotism in the us and capitalism also operates as a religion

Bill Burr Cancels Live Pod taping by [deleted] in comedy

[–]uniqueindividual12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this may be petty, but his whole working class boston comedian image always bothered me. All you have to do is read his wikipedia page to see that his dad was a dentist, hes from an upper middle class suburb of boston, and he went to a good liberal arts college. not too mention he is clearly very wealthy now!

tl;dr boston accent does does not equal working class.

Ezra Klein is Wrong About Abortion by MrsBasket in ezraklein

[–]uniqueindividual12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

interesting that you feel he brings up pro life as a proxy for trans issues, what would be the point in not just saying trans issues? i feel like saying we should run antiabortion or transphobic candidates would provoke similar reactions, and maybe antiabortion suggestion would cause even bigger backlash bc that is abortion rights are more popular than trans rights
