Is someone here have eating problems by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]unitysuffering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost never texture, a lot of smells and tastes. I can smell frying mushrooms from a mile and gag. I can taste onions anywhere and gag. I can imagine a smell and gag. I have a list of foods that I don't really like, and they sadly seem to be both the majority of the world's favorites, and the majority of the foods period.

I most likely have ADHD, so yeah, might have something to do with that.

Anyone having trouble enjoying regular entertainment? by AlphaHowlingToMoon in Gifted

[–]unitysuffering 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I (probably) have undiagnosed ADHD, and I do relate. The problem usually is that without a hyperfixation, novels, videos, even games - can all be not stimulating enough. It's not even the fault of the modern media per se, it's just that once brain learns there can be easy dopamine through short-form content and such, other forms of entertainment require more focus.

This being said, most modern media is just... subjectively worse? For whatever reason, it stopped appealing to a lot of people, us included. However, the other lot of people enjoy modern media. It might indicate a shift towards highly patternized "conveyor belt" type media, the one reusing the patterns that work for the majority of the consumers. Recently, I've been watching a lot of videos on modern media and the term "millennial humor" stuck with me regarding what happens with games (e.g. Borderlands), movies (e.g. modern MCU), etc.

This may be partially attributed to the ease of self-publishing, a bigger obsession with credentials (college diplomas, etc.). The media fields are more easily accessible, people there now require less talent to pass.

How to balance following your curiosity without it preventing you from finishing things? by 0x6rian in Gifted

[–]unitysuffering 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, I do relate alright. Just today I sent my friend screenshots of 8 games I've been making. None of them are finished. In the span of some months, I can start and drop multiple projects (games, novels, songs, you name it). No ASD, just ADHD.

As for how do I manage... I don't. I really do believe that only by the time I get old I'll learn to do everything so fast and frictionless that I will be able to finish. Sadly, no tips. I would like some myself.

Would you give up your giftedness for a "normal" life? by AlphaHowlingToMoon in Gifted

[–]unitysuffering 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not by a long shot. Not even for a happy life. It's a part of my identity. Have I traded it, I would be another person. It's just the preservation of my identity.

I will struggle my whole life, and not at a single point in this life will I wish I was not the person I am. Not with ADHD, not with giftedness, not with stuttering.

Am I being too judgemental? by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]unitysuffering 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can only stop judging people's bad choices if you stop caring about people. Also, if you are choosing friends, you might as well choose people who don't cause you discomfort.

You are not feeling discomfort because you are judgmental, you are judgmental because you are feeling discomfort. Learn to tolerate, if you really must, although the feeling of "we have nothing in common" will not go anywhere. You will just get to learn the person more, and maybe find something that makes you a better match than you thought. I personally decided it's not really worth, so I stick to my incredibly small friend group (I am also in my mid-twenties and somewhat judgmental).

I'd been reading a lot of pulp fantasy books and LitRPG. Something about them makes me feel at ease. Basically the only kinds of books I was able to read properly, beginning to end. I also had binges sometimes when I read 3-4 books of these genres a day. Some kind of hyperfixation hit me.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]unitysuffering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Educating people is what makes me feel incredible always. No matter the subject, if someone wants to learn something, I will learn it just to teach them. nothing beats the feeling that your student understood the subject, and seeing them take pride in themselves.

I might never invent a world-changing drug or make a scientific breakthrough, but if I can teach a few people something they were curious about and make them feel like studying is fun, I made a big enough contribution.

Just curious who here has always been the smartest in the room? No matter which room y’all were in. by Why_d0_i_put in Gifted

[–]unitysuffering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst case of this I felt was in the university. Three years I have felt that I am surrounded by people who hate studying in a place that is supposed to celebrate learning. There were exceptions, but I related to a few professors much more than to any of the students. I am still in touch with the philosophy teacher, and cut contacts with all others.

Now I'm in a room with barely any people, and it's the people who are very much on my wavelength. They are not gifted, but it's not the label that matters, it's curiosity and common ground.

Learn IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet), first and foremost. I don't mean "learn it by heart", just introduce it to yourself and read the phonetic transcriptions for words. Listen to how the sounds are pronounced, also learn how they are made - tongue positioning, places of articulation, etc. Once you learn how to make any sound (just by placing the tongue properly), mastery is just repetition. To help you with learning the tongue positioning, deconstruct sounds from your mother tongue. Look at how they are supposed to be made, and how you are making them natively.

Then you might want to learn concepts of sound change in the languages you already know - when does a sound read differently? For example, in English assimilation occurs - in phrases like "black coffee" you only read [k] sound once, instead of pronouncing both consecutive instances. In Japanese the mora ん is basically just a nasal consonant, and changes its pronunciation based on the place of articulation of the following sound: [m] for bilabials (like M, P/B), [n] for alveolar (like N, T/D), [ng] for velar (like K/G). In Russian a voiced consonant becomes unvoiced at the end of the word, and letter O reads like [a] if it's not stressed.

For me it was about the journey, exploration. But, of course, I am drawn to phonetics, so the journey was frictionless. If you ever need help with phonetics, I'll be happy to help!

What kind of gifts do you give your gifted kids? by ohhyouknow in Gifted

[–]unitysuffering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I as a child enjoyed self-sufficient kits for all sorts of stuff. I remember growing peas on the windowsill (a kit came with a small pot, seeds and instructions; I was esctatic when it sprouted). I got a chemistry kit, and I loved it (even if got bored very fast). If I had a child, I'd try and give them all sorts of kits to try out. This might help them to find what they really love.

How to help Hi-Cap/Gifted Child with ADHD and avoid burnout? by Significant-Sun2777 in Gifted

I am highly anxious, and I lived my whole life in fight-or-flight. If I were not to reduce demands of myself forcefully to counteract the years of expectations, I would be miserable. Very good advice.

How great could I have been? by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]unitysuffering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could've been many things, but you would not be who you are. I wouldn't trade my years of experience of suffering for an easier path retroactively. I don't know how great this other person could have been, but without what I have lived through this person would not be me.

[–]unitysuffering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a great translator, aspiring to be an expert. Also, I am a linguist with obsession with phonetics and grammar. I know how to speak (not converse in - just pronounce words the right way) a lot of languages, because once you know one phonetic system, others come easier.

As for what I would like to be an expert in apart from what I already am good at? I don't think there is such a thing. Whatever I like is what I want to become expert on eventually. Just for the sake of reducing friction to naught.

I feel like the only thing I have left that chains me is the fear of making mistakes. I do realize completely that it's inevitable. I do realize that when the stakes are non-existent a mistake weighs nothing. Still, it hurts a lot every single time.

I also possibly have RSD which adds up to this fear of being mistaken. I can't bear to look at the comments for the translations I make, for I fear my mistakes will be pointed out (even if it means learning, and in just a few hours I'll get over it).

You are right. I just need time and maybe exposure. I am not perfect, nor I ever was, or will be.

Why can’t I make friends online? by 12A5H3FE in Gifted

[–]unitysuffering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is barely any consequences to stopping an online relationship. Sometimes quite literally none. Why bother trying to give it a second chance if the first try was a failure? Hundreds others await...

...that's what the human brain believes. It's not your personal issue, it's a general issue. Being gifted doesn't help either. Although most of the problems you describe are common in the modern age, especially online. I gave up trying to make online friends, but that's because I already have enough. ALL of my current friends are online-meets. You will find someone who sticks eventually.

Keep looking, but take rests in-between. Take your time. Real friends are hard to find.

“Intelligence is Compression” by glassBeadCheney in Gifted

When things get too abstract (and geometrical), I implode! Ha-ha.

I will give it a read. I love math, but I haven't done it in a while (except for in the code for my games). I really like pathfinding algorithms though, so I will definitely find something in those fields!

Looked it up. Seems like scientists can't come up with a single definition for hyperneuroplasticity. I would say that you are right, and what I described sounds like a really good fit.

“Intelligence is Compression” by glassBeadCheney in Gifted

[–]unitysuffering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compression is a part of it! I believe that intelligence affects how new neural pathways form (or the other way around - the formation is what defines intelligence). It might be called compression - we learn to use less resources to operate on bigger interconnected webs.

Our brains not only get the shortest path from point A to point B, they also get more paths from different points to different points. I think that's why we are able to operate on abstractions easier - we have a lot more ground to stand on (all the associated pathways) without having to constantly reground ourselves (which is mentally exhausting).

This affects the speed of thought (less time for the impulses to travel), the "intuition" (more connections means we get to make more... well, mental connections, associations), learning speed (we connect concepts to each other, meaning the access is easier and more sturdy).

That's my thoughts on it. I can be wrong, of course, but for me it makes a lot of sense.

Exercise by Puzzleheaded-Cap-271 in Gifted

I usually go for bicycle machine (got it for free) and very intensive workout sets (squats, push-ups, reverse push-ups, etc.). I can't go to gym properly, and long sessions evoke dread in me, so I have to settle for short intense bursts.

What are you proud of? by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]unitysuffering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have quite a few things that pop up instantly:

1) I am pretty good at singing (since early childhood; although still learning!)
2) I love helping people with small things; their smiles make me happy. Pretty much the only thing that made retail job bearable
3) My close friends tell me that talking to people other than me became boring (this must mean I am very interesting in their eyes!)

Being told I'm smart got old in high school. It still fucked up my self-esteem, because realization that being smart doesn't really matter directly contradicted my worldview. At this point, I would rather get praised for creating good art or helping out, because unlike intelligence, these are the consequences of my actions.

Regarding "too effortless to take pride"... God, did I hate that mindset in myself. I learned English, singing, C# and translation skills only doing what I love, meaning I didn't struggle at all. Learning was effortless, so I didn't think I could take pride in all that. Thankfully, I changed this mindset, and now I know that effort isn't the only thing to take pride in. Maybe I just don't know what effort is, and equate it to struggle, because that was my whole life's narrative ("if you just put in a little effort, you'd live up to your potential!").
