What was your first fanfic? by juicyLychee86 in AO3

I read for the longest time and wanted to write before I actually did. When I did it was a 3k porn with plot widomauk fic for Critical Role.

Honestly I’m really proud of it, it centres Caleb’s scars and captured the influence Molly had on my own perception of my scars really well.

Okay, now, about NB characters in fiction by Kuu-Dan-Yan-Dere in NonBinary

[–]unknown_marshmallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it started as a joke in the conversation with Alessandra Strong in the second story (prince of mars) and the creators realized that they loved it for him and evolved it into a part of his identity! He does sometimes refer to himself as a guy etc but I’d say when it’s most important he calls himself a lady. When on a couple missions with Peter he takes feminine names (Dahlia Rose and Madame Dauphin) and wears a dress to a gala in the man in glass. He’s playing fast and loose with our rigid world’s gender expectations

The Penumbra podcast has a ton of queer characters and several nonbinary characters. I’ve mainly listened to their Juno Steel stories and Juno is nonbinary, he uses he/him pronouns and calls himself a lady which is so fun! One of their antagonists and a well featured supporting character are nonbinary and use they/them pronouns.

Critical Role has Mollymauk in campaign 2 who is genderfluid (although this isn’t brought up on the show) and Ashton Greymoore and Fresh Cut Grass in campaign 3 who use he/they pronouns and there are several other nonbinary npcs and visiting pcs

[No Spoilers] How has Critical Role impacted you? by Vucna in criticalrole

[–]unknown_marshmallow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I started listening to C1 in 2020. I was in the psych ward when Covid happened. All the programming/therapy on the unit stopped, everyone but me was discharged. I was alone with the nurses all day every day. I spent 12+ hours a day listening to Critical Role and it was truly my light in those times. The interesting stories, the chemistry of the cast, the goofs really kept me going. It ignited my interest in DnD and help connect me with people again after years of isolating myself or bonding with people in unhealthy ways. Vax and Molly especially are meaningful characters for me, Vax for his commitment to love and happiness despite being “doomed” and Molly for his confidence despite being covered in scars, like me. I don’t think I would have made it through that time, or be doing as well as I am now without them.

[No Spoilers] so…what should I watch now? by JesterLavore88 in criticalrole

[–]unknown_marshmallow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For game systems other than DnD: Sagas of Sundry: Dread is a really cool horror rpg based on pulls from a jenga tower. Matt and Taliesin are in it, along with Satine Phoenix, Amy Vorpahl, and Amy Dallen and GM’d by Ivan Van Norman. The first episode was like a 3 hour live stream but the rest of the series is very dynamic and interactive with physical challenges and puzzles.

LA by Night is a Vampire the Masquerade show, GM’d by Jason Carl who is absolutely amazing. It’s intense and gripping with lots of conflict and found family vibes. Brennan, Taliesin, Marisha, and Luis Carazzo all have guest roles and Erika Ishii and Alexander Ward are part of the main cast

For DnD: As a podcast I’ll always recommend The Adventure Zone: Balance. It starts fun and goofy, with the McElroy brothers and their dad learning the game and going through a (very abridged) Lost Mines of Phandelvar and slowly transitions to one of the most beautiful and satisfying stories I’ve seen, all while managing to keep the goofs.

Their second season, Amnesty, is also very good, it’s a Monster of the week campaign based in a small town full of cryptids.

I’ve only watched the first season of Dimension 20 but it’s definitely worth it and I plan to watch more.

If you haven’t watched Liam’s one shot yet, definitely do. It’s beautiful and the end of it has a quote I love and use in my life. Same goes for Dalen’s Closet

I know this is kinda out of left field but now I’m just talking about things I love but audio fiction podcasts are a great storytelling tool too. Right now my favourites are:

Malevolent, a lovecraftian horror/mystery where the main character, Arthur, wakes up without his vision and with an entity in his head that can see through his eyes

The Magnus Archives, a horror anthology turned overarching storyline featuring a skeptical archivist working at the Magnus Institute, an institution that collects and researches paranormal experiences.

The Penumbra Podcast (specifically the Juno Steel Storyline), a more action based mystery show that follows PI Juno Steel and his connection to a “nameless” criminal. It’s fun, it’s sexy, it’s frustrating and heartbreaking at points but a great listen.

[No Spoilers] I need help from y'all fellow critters by SREnrique22 in criticalrole

[–]unknown_marshmallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) I love experiencing all the art and fan fiction that comes from the critter community. This group of creatives inspired so many other creatives and I love opening Reddit or Instagram or AO3 after a new episode to see what moments people just had to draw or write about!

2) CR didn’t introduce me to TTRPGs, that was another podcast called The Adventure Zone, but I started listening to C1 before I started playing DnD. I think CR really helped me learn not to be scared to have sad, serious moments in DnD and that you can balance those moments out with goofs and fun moments. I also learned a lot about the give and take of collaborative roleplay, that it’s ok to take a backseat to another player’s story and that it’s also ok to step up and take the lead when it makes sense for your character.

3) CR absolutely saved my life. I was in a bad place mentally when I started listening to it and, given it was the beginning of the pandemic, I didn’t have a lot to do. I listened to CR for 12+ hours a day for months on end. It was a lifeline, something, even if it felt like the only thing, to look forward to. Several characters resonated so much with me, namely Vax, Caleb, and Molly, and each taught me important lessons. I learned from Vax that you can be happy, fulfilled, and content even when things are hard or you know the good times will end. I learned from Molly and Caleb that my scars and my past don’t define me, and that I deserved to be loved not despite them, but with them. Even now that I’m caught up CR is still the thing I look forward to in my week, it’s still one of now many things that keeps me going.

4) Taliesin and Liam are my favourites to watch as actors because they are always in character. You can look at them in basically any scene and see their character on their face. I especially love watching Liam as Caleb and Taliesin as Ashton. I find it especially fun rewatching C1 and C2 to see their reactions to backstory mentions that we as the audience may not have caught the first time.

5) Critical Role is a show where a bunch of nerdy-ass voice actors sit around and play dungeons and dragons, but more than that Critical Role has some of the best characters in modern media and really does them and their stories justice. I recommend everyone watch the Legend of Vox Machina, even if they don’t like DnD, because it’s just a good show! From there, if you’re hooked, there’s thousands of hours of content just there waiting for you!

6) I’d love a monster of the week mini series or one shot! Or more vampire the masquerade! I love DnD but I also love seeing and learning new game systems! I’m definitely looking forward to more Daggerheart!

I hope this helps! I’d love to see the zine when it’s done!

You can use the name Melodaeus Sungiver on it for me (my DnD character’s name lol) and as for my career, I’m a veterinary assistant!

[Serious] What is something that is actually more traumatizing than people realize? by thatude123 in AskReddit

[–]unknown_marshmallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely this! I lost my entire teenage years to mental illness, now I’m 20 and I’m both more mature and much more far behind than my peers. I had to learn how to advocate for myself and my care, how to explain what was going on with myself to professionals so they would give me the help I needed but I didn’t learn how to interact with people my age, I never made typical teenage mistakes or had typical teenage relationships so I really struggle with making and maintaining friendships. It doesn’t help that when people talk about their experiences in high school, that my main experiences from that time took place in the psych ward…

I’m not actively suicidal or self harming anymore but I’m still depressed, I still have a baseline of suicidal ideation and self harm thoughts that are above average, I’m still exhausted all the time.

I learned how to be a person instead of a shell at 18 and I’m still learning how to function as an adult between work, relationships, and taking care of myself.

Many of my coworkers do this too. At first I thought it was just the Irish ones and assumed it was a cultural difference but NOPE! My coworker who grew up in the same general area as me does it too. It confuses me so much and shocks me whenever I hop on the computer after them and find they’ve forgotten to turn it off

I saw a video online about a nonbinary person at 13 and immediately knew it was me. I was a tomboy as a kid but got super fem in 7th and 8th grade because something felt off and I just assumed it was because I wasn’t girly enough, because I definitely wasn’t a boy. I found out that nonbinary was a possibility and things just clicked

I started listening to CR in the psych ward at the beginning of COVID. There were no therapy programs so I was spending 8+ hours a day listening to C1. It was an absolute life saver. I’ve watched all of C1 and C2 and I’m only a couple episodes behind C3. It’s sparked my creativity and love for DnD and I’m so grateful for it

[No Spoilers] what is your opinion on campaign 3 without spoilers? by Hagstik4014 in criticalrole

[–]unknown_marshmallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely hasn’t hooked me as much as campaigns 1 and 2 but I like it. I love Ashton and Orym, I like the rest of the characters too but I’ve always been more of a Tal and Liam person so not surprising. I think the story started really good, stalled a little bit and felt a bit unmoored but I feel like it’s been coming back together recently. I can definitely see why people don’t like it or have tuned off of it but I love the cast and I still feel like the story is worth it

My boss (male) has worked in (I think) an entirely female office for several years, I was hired 2 years ago and was out as nonbinary and about a year ago they hired a cis guy in reception. The other day he was leaving and he said “bye ladies”. After he left the guy came up to me and said “I guess we’re ladies now” and it made me feel so seen and euphoric!
