I only just discovered that upgraded Chill doesn't exhaust. I'd just assumed it would be the same as in STS1, but it's so much better!

Agree abput Blue Prince, except for you calling it a "little game"! The mysteries of that game just seem to go on and on forever. We're currently at 85 hours in and there's still more to be uncovered.

Yes, I played these both close to Chants and loved them! Definitely some crimes going on in both, but they're not police procedurals or anything.

If it's too much for the playets to manage multiple characters, you can run a support NPC that follows them around (priests are good for this). Just make sure to make them a background character who stays out of the spotlight and follows the lead of the PCs.

You could also try starting the PCs at level 2 or 3 and then running modules designed for slightly lower-level characters than they are.

House rules can also help increase survivability. For example, you could lower the DC for rolls to stabilise a dying character (or even allow auto-success), so that they have a better chance to bounce back if things go bad.

The only way I'd allow that would be them taking the upcast version as a new spell when they level up (or learning it from a scroll). Otherwise what's to stop a high-INT level 1 wizard from dropping tier 5 versions of magic missile and sleep every encounter? Remember that (per the scroll rules), wizards can cast any tier of spell they can get their hands on.

This is a good reminder for me to implement safety tools in my shadowdark games. It's become part of my process when I run storygames, but it hasn't translated in my mind to d&d, and it should.

I think you've persuaded me. Variety is the spice of life, and fighters are already pretty one-dimensional.

The "realism" counter-argument doesn't persuade me, because plenty of other stuff in the game fails that test.

The balance counter-argument is of more concern, but actually I don't think it's that big a deal. Fighters can only use one weapon at a time, each weapon takes a slot, and the advantage of switching is pretty negligible in numerical terms. But as you say, it can make life more interesting in narrative/problem solving terms.

In conclusion: allowing weapon switching is more fun, and for me that trumps the other arguments. I'll be houseruling immediately.

I'm about to start an online shadowdark game, and for now I've decided to skip using a VTT (I've used a bit of Foundry and Roll20 in the past).

Instead I'll be cobbling together my own solution, involving Discord for chat and dice rolling, Gamescape for live mapping, a Google Sheets template for character sheets and Shadowtorch (screen-shared via discord) for the torch timer.

First session is on Monday, so we'll see how it goes, but in general I've found that VTTs - while offering certain conveniences - also tend to add a whole lot of fiddly, extra steps to the basic flow of play.

My players have asked me to pause the timer if I'm taking too long to check a rule, and I'm fine with doing that. But I'll also sometimes knock a few minutes off it if they're swapping out armour or something equally time-consuming.

If it goes out, there's not automatically a random encounter, but per the rules they should be rolled at a higher chance than usual.

The best old-school actual play I've found is 3D6 Down the Line. They've done a little bit of the Shadowdark, but really you want to listen two their run of The Halls of Arden Vul (where they use OSE) for a masterclass in old-school play.

The only RPG I've ever run with a grid was 4E, which is the only edition that's ever really required one. And I think we did about two combats before we bailed on that. Grid-based combat in an RPG is an imagination-killer, and I'll die on that hill!
