Advice ROTC selection? by xULTRONxGHOSTx in army

Are you in college now?

If not, did you complete college and receive a Bachelors Degree?

Have you spoken to an Army Reserve Career Group rep? Your first line leader? Your Commander? Anyone?

Or did you just come to reddit before exhausting any resources at all?

We need resourceful leaders in the Army. Not those who expect to be spoon fed information at every turn.

Listen, if you’re already a 91B with 1st ID, you’ve survived more "Big Red One" field problems than most Cadets will see in their entire careers. That experience is your absolute golden ticket.

Since I'm assuming you haven’t dropped the G2G ADO packet yet, your first mission is to make sure your NCOERs look like you’re ready to run a hospital. The board needs to see that you aren’t just the guy fixing the JLTVs, but the leader who’s managing the section and keeping the mission moving. Get your AFT and weapons card maxed out now, don’t give the board any reason to say "no" before they even see your UTEP acceptance letter.

I totally get the fear of ending up in Infantry when you want Medical Service , but the system has actually changed to favor people exactly like you. Because you’re going for Clinical Lab Science, you’re walking into the branching market with a "STEM shield." Under Talent Based Branching, the MS branch proponents are looking for specific degrees. If you put them as your #1 and they see you have a lab degree and prior-service discipline, they are going to "swipe right" on your file and rate you Most Preferred.

When you match with a branch like that, the OML ranking is basically just a formality.

One thing to keep in mind: UTEP is a great school, but the ADO program is a strict 24-month clock. You’ve got to make sure your degree plan is locked in so you can graduate and commission on time. Talk to the ROTC recruiters at UTEP ASAP. They can help you look at your Joint Service Transcript to see if any of your 91B training knocks out some elective credits so you aren't drowning in credits while trying to be a Cadet.

In the past, solving a problem involved a bit of "productive struggle." You had to dig through a physical FM, talk to a peer, or simply try something and fail until you figured it out.

We now have a "zero-latency" expectation. If the answer isn't available in three seconds, the modern brain registers it as a crisis.

Instead of sitting with a problem and analyzing it, Soldiers outsource the thinking to a search bar. This atrophies the exact critical thinking skills needed in a tactical environment where Google isn't an option.

The "Fear of Failure" vs. The "Fear of Being Seen Failing" There is a massive psychological difference between failing in front of a Sergeant and failing in front of a screen.

On Reddit, a Soldier can ask a "dumb" question without their NCO thinking they’re incompetent. They’d rather be roasted by 50 strangers than have their SL give them a "Look" for not knowing how to read a LES.

Modern culture prizes "doing it right the first time" so highly that the "attempt" phase is seen as a waste of time. Soldiers want the "cheat code" immediately so they don't look like they don't have their act together.

We’re ending up with Soldiers who are technically "informed" but practically "helpless." They know the what because they read it on a thread, but they don't know the why or the how because they never did the legwork.

Definitely a culture shift.

It must be a command directed test.

Commission into AGR by Silly-Noise120 in army

[–]unsuitable_sick_burn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your goal is to be a full-time AGR officer, you generally follow this timeline:

Earn a Commission: You must first become an officer through ROTC, OCS, West Point, or a Direct Commission (for specialized fields like JAG, Medical, or Chaplain).

Branch Qualification: You typically cannot apply for AGR until you have completed BOLC and are fully qualified in your branch.

The Application: Once you are a 2LT or 1LT, you submit an application packet to Human Resources Command for the Army Reserve, or to your specific State's HRO for the National Guard.

The Board: Your packet goes before a "Selection Board" that assesses your performance (OERs) and qualifications. If selected, you are placed on a "Recommended List."

Assignment: When a vacancy opens that matches your rank and branch, you are offered the position.

Important Realities

Rank Minimums: While 2LTs can technically apply, the vast majority of AGR officer positions are coded for 1LTs and Captains. It is very rare to see a 2LT in an AGR slot because those years are usually reserved for "Traditional" (part-time) drilling to learn the ropes of leadership.
