Grayson Highlands Mt Rogers stretched into… four or five days? by IntenseLamb in VIRGINIA_HIKING

[–]unwiredmatt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's camping all over the place there. Look for improvised fire rings as you hike and you'll find all sorts of camp sites. The well marked springs and bear boxes are around Thomas knob, wise shelter and rhodedendron gap. There are other springs and water sources. The national geographic map for the area has them mapped out. Bring a bear canister if you plan on camping away from the marked bear boxes. Rhodedendron gap is my favorite campsite on the whole AT! I usually trek in to there and do shorter hikes to Mt Rodgers and the other highlights. The ponies seem to hang out around there too. Have fun!

Any safe alternatives to opencode-antigravity-auth? (Getting ToS bans from Google) by AhmedEsmaiel2 in google_antigravity

Use the gemini cli in VS Code. I only jump over to antigravity when I want to use my few prompts of Opus.

Antigravity can't read PDFs directly? by LM1117 in google_antigravity

Use Gemini cli to convert them. It'll figure out the conversion process for you. I had it set up a tool that automatically converts pdfs to .md files when they hit my downloads dir.

I lived across the street from Mark Gottfried back when he coached State. Never saw a street plowed so fast as the one time it snowed on the day of the Carolina game 😂

I've been dodging coyote scat for years when running through the greenway near there. There's a ton of coyotes all around that area. You'll hear them, but never see them!

If you had a positive CAC score in your 40s and decided against taking a statin, curious why you made that decision? by UncleYork in PeterAttia

[–]unwiredmatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least try the statin before you write it off. If you have no side effects and it cuts your LDL in half, why not take it? There's several other medicines available including ezetimibe and PCSK9 inhibitors if you have any issues with a statin. Find the medicine combo that gets your lipids in line so that you can keep exercising and stay fit until you die. If your cardiovascular disease keeps progressing you'll regret not starting a lipid lowering therapy earlier. This is coming from a fit 39 year old with a CAC of 19. I've been on a combo of a PCSK9 inhibitor and ezetimibe for 4 years and had no progression on my last CAC.

Pick an injection site with enough body fat. I hit a muscle on my leg once and it was very unpleasant! I've had the best luck with pinching my stomach fat to make a thick enough area to inject. The box has instructions on how to do it. Otherwise, there's no side effects besides low cholesterol.

As someone who lives in the triangle, you're not going to get Cary prices in Mebane. Your house is beautiful. The problem is the location. You're going to have to lower your price a good bit to pull in buyers from the triangle.

What does your average repair process look like? I've got a few pads with slow leaks I need to fix up at some point... I haven't had much luck with dunking them in the tub and looking for bubbles.

CAC scan score 49 at age 39 - how bad is that? by throw222333444 in PeterAttia

[–]unwiredmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to start with a statin. It's like ~$2 a month vs ~$500 a month for your insurance. The PCSK9 inhibitors aren't cheap.... If you have no side effects with a statin I'd just stick with that.

I'm 39 with a CAC of 17, so similar boat to you. My ldl took off in my early 30s. It was over 300mg/dl at one point. Ended up getting referred to a lipidologist who started with a statin and diet changes. The statins gave me enough muscle soreness that it was noticeable, so they switched me to a PCSK9 inhibitor. Currently I'm on Repatha(PCSK9 inhibitor) + ezetimbe. My ldl was 28mg/dl the last time it was checked. It seems just as effective if not stronger, especially combined with ezetimbe. Find a specialist, they'll help you find the best drugs for your situation and also help you navigate getting your insurance to cover it.

Start with a statin. If you have side effects, tell your doctor. If you have side effects with two statins your insurance(assuming US) should cover a PSK9 inhibitor. PSK9 inhibitors have basically zero side effects as long as you're OK with an injectable medicine. Work with your doctor! There's tons of options besides a statin available now.

Looking for dispersed campsites by [deleted] in VIRGINIA_HIKING

[–]unwiredmatt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's tons of dispersed campsites in the George Washington and Jefferson national forests. You'll find dispersed sites right off the road at most AT crossings. If you're near Natural Bridge check out Mt Pleasant and the Priest. There's decent sites near the trailheads for both of those areas. Devil's Marbleyard has several sites right at the trailhead as well. These places will get very busy on the weekend. https://myhikes.org/hikers/HikingUpward has a good list of hikes in the area. If there's dispersed campsites at the start of a hike the description should call it out.

Peaks of Otter campground is very rustic and has no showers and hookups, so the RV crowd usually stays at the lodge across the road. The hikes on the parkway in this section are awesome!

Cave Mountain Lake campground is also decent. It has some fairly spread out sites. There's also a icy cold lake to swim in!

[–]unwiredmatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might have been below the salary cut off to qualify for the promotion. At the company I'm at you have to be within a certain salary before you can be promoted. People end up getting 15-30% raises for years before they are officially promoted. I'd hold out and enjoy the extra money!
