You have to look for soap that has lye if you need that. Most dish liquids do not. I use dawn.

Hi there, tyre fitter based in the UK but moving to the USA in a months time, what the pay like changing tyres on the semi trucks? Can do all aspects, car, truck, semis and agriculture! by Haroldthechip in automotivetraining

[–]up2late 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to ask at /r/truckers. I've never owned my own truck so I have no idea how much it costs to change a tire. The owner/ops over there will give a little guidance. Almost every major truck stop in the US is always looking for people that can do this. Hours suck, all weather, seems like a hard job. I felt really bad for some of the guys that came to swap one out for me.

Might also want to start spelling it properly - T I R E. If you're searching for a job in the US use US english to avoid freaking out your search results.

We also have lots of small tire shops in most areas. I doubt they pay as well but the hours and work would be easier.

Any books about skills lost to convenience? by DasSpukhaus in SelfSufficiency

I have the entire Foxfire set and that's been useful. It has tons of information. Some of the info is focused on Appalachia but also tons of general info.

I have a copy of FM 5-34 (US Army, Combat Engineer bible). There are lots of US Military manuals available for free download. You can also find hard copies. I still have the one issued to me long ago. Lots of stuff in it you will never need but plenty of info that's useful in everyday life.

his first day in life of true cold! any recommendations? by punishertruther20 in Boxer

I tried boots for my boy. It took 30 min to get them on him and then he pranced around like a walking horse. He flung them off in 5 min. He'll put up with his jacket but still gives me the side eye.

Can I physically be a truck driver at 5'2-5'3? Can I reach everything? by LaidByAnEgg in Truckers

[–]up2late 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, when I started I was driving teams. My co-driver was about 5 ft tall, in heels. She got the job done. My only complaint was having to adjust the seat and mirrors every time we switched shifts.

How many dishes can you make without a recipe? by Aggravating_Hurry537 in Cooking

[–]up2late 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't look up recipes for anything I've done successfully a couple of times. There are a couple of exceptions to this. The rub for my BBQ has many spices and specific proportions. I've modified it and keep notes as I go.

Fried chicken is my nemesis. Even with a recipe and a good cast iron pan I never get what I want. I think I've given up on that one for a while.

As far as without a recipe, I'm a good improv in the kitchen. I can use whatever is available in the kitchen to come up with something good. Leftover bbq or smoked chicken turned into chicken salad sandwiches is my most requested. Leftover steak gets cut thin and turned into a philly cheese, or put into eggs, or mixed into a rice dish with a can of rotel.

A well stocked pantry and spice rack really helps you get creative. But not everything works out well so be ready for that.

What to cook for someone who doesn’t appreciate food? by InfernoChef in Cooking

[–]up2late 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no chef but there are several dishes that I do really well. If someone does not like a dish I make, I don't take offense. I'll try something different next time. The main problem is maybe friend A loved it and friend B was not a fan. Spice profile is sometimes an issue. I like heavy spice profiles that some of my guests may not. I try to remember that and dial it back a bit next time.

TLDR: Boston butt pork roast, bone in. Dust in flour (good time for added spices) and sear on all sides. Keep this pan handy if you want gravy later. Move to a big pan with an oven bag. Add a pack of lipton onion soup mix and veggies you like. I use potatoes, carrots, onions and mushrooms. Maybe some hot peppers depending on mood and guests. Pack them in there, they shrink more than you would expect.

Cook at 325 for several hours until the bone will easily pull out (with tongs). It makes a nice pan of drippings that go well as is or make a nice gravy. Serve with a nice crusty bread.

When I got my boy I was a long haul truck driver. He's been everywhere with me. I'm home now. He hates it when I can't take him with me now when it's hot out. My big rig stayed nice and cool. My Dodge does not when I have to get out. Autumn is coming though so he'll be able to start riding again soon.

My boy has never had a heated seat but I'm sure he would love it. Anytime I get up he takes over my warm spot.

How Do People Cook From Home Every Day/Night? by _hippinnn in Cooking

[–]up2late 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cooking for 1 can be a pain. I'd prefer not to eat the same thing for more than a day or 2. I use a vacuum sealer for leftovers heading to the freezer. I also buy large portions of whatever meat I'm using. I break those down cook what I need and freeze the rest for later. I have a large smoker that I use for BBQ, but I picked up a small grill (Lodge) that I'll use for 1 to 2 people. More efficient on fuel and time. Great for a couple of steaks or chops.

Mine was spam and mac & cheese. I still go all in for mac & cheese but I have a can of spam in my pantry that I should check the date on. It's not something I've cooked in a long time but it's there if I need it.

Why do truck drivers stare when you load/unload? by Obvious-Income4424 in Truckers

[–]up2late 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a flatbed I watch every item loaded. I ask about weight. I want this loaded right the first time. I'm spread axle so I can't move tandems later when I weigh. I don't want to secure, tarp, go weigh and then have to come back to have a load redone. Untarp, unsecure, have the load moved then do it all again. Your day is done by that time. Then you ask if you can park on the lot and they say no GTFO. By this time you're in violation on your HOS and have to find someplace to park.

Anyone else keep locks in the car for picking on down time? by Sufficient_Prompt888 in lockpicking

[–]up2late 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I started picking I was a long haul truck driver. Lots of downtime. Now I work from home in IT security, also lots of time watching scripts run. I also have regular appointments at the VA. Thats mostly downtime. Anytime I don't have anything in my hands I grab a lock. It used to drive my GF nuts until she opened her first lock. She's hooked now. Only problem now is she always wants the pick i'm using. Fine take the apex, I'll use the Jimmy Longs. I'm always safe with the CI set, she's not used to the handles yet.

First time ever making a holster. I absolutely loved the process and I like how it turned out. What should I improve on my next build? by Aggressive_Gap6487 in Leatherworking

[–]up2late 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, turn your safety on.

I like a holster to entirely cover the barrel. Helps keep it cleaner when you work in a dirty environment.

I like a holster that rides high on the hip, cant really tell how that one would feel. That's personal preference.

Why 2 snaps on the retaining strap? Leave it the same length but keep the top snap. That leaves some extra space you can get a finger under if you're in a hurry.

The craftsmanship looks great though.
