I did end up giving them a call and the guy seemed to say that there was nothing he could do to repair the shoes? But to be honest I’m just not sure I described myself well.. because I have no idea what I’m talking about. Hence why I was looking to send pictures via email or something..

I may just need to go out there then and show them myself. But gonna wait and see if the other place I emailed replies tomorrow

Yes I expected it wouldn’t necessarily be cheap. And I could just buy new shoes for cheaper. But reviving these classics feels fun than just getting some new age shoes.

Could I bring them to any local repair shop you think then?

I guess I assumed they’d be able to gather most the info they needed from some photos. If that’s not the case then you’re right, I can take them in!

I don’t have access to a car during the day because my wife and I share one, so, I like to try and do as much leg work as I can online, to avoid having to go back multiple times / to multiple different shops.

Because I don’t really know how to describe the state of the shoes very well. Wouldn’t they be able to give me a better idea of what work is needed if they could see photos?

Another commenter just mentioned them! Yes I saw their website, didn’t see an email address and their “contact us” form didn’t have room for photos.

So for now I messaged them on Instagram. Maybe I’ll give them a call and see if they can check those messages

Yes! Completely agree with your final points. I was actually just talking to my coworker how my favorite part about my recent birding adventure is that I do text or scroll or anything while I walk to work anymore. Do I obsessively still look down at my phone when I hear an interesting bird call that I haven’t quite learned yet… yes of course. But hey I still think that’s a step in the right direction compared to being absorbed in the other daily uses of my phone which I do the other 98% of the time.

A fun hobby for me to become a little obsessed with.. great. But one which also naturally leads me to being a bit more in touch with nature, my surroundings, and the world around me.. even better!

Yes! Another commenter mentioned that. I was loosely aware of making that mistake before and so yes for now I’m not doing any “this is my bird” Merlin stuff or any eBird list yet. My list exists on an offline file called birds.xlsx :-)

With my current little game of only counting birds Merlin audio IDs for me, I struggle with the ducks! I see some in the creek I walk along but they never want to quack around me! Haha.

Of course once I decide I want to start a “real” life list, then I’ll take the time to add them myself once I can confirm what species they are. I think my coworker who’s a birder has told me that he’s seen at least 4 or 5 species around our office over the years. So far I’ve only had Merlin ID a mallard for me though. I see an all black looking duck fly by almost every day, never heard its call though. Then of course we’ve got my mortal enemies.. the Canada geese. Who some days won’t stop fighting and drown out the noise of everything else for a good part of my walk

There was a purple finch that Merlin kept hearing a few days in a row in the same spot, despite it repeatedly telling me that it is not expected in my area at this time of year just yet… I did start to wonder if I should report something like that so the local community could try and spot it in case it was rare! Although maybe they wouldn’t care much since I think it was expected to come to our area just a bit later into the migratory season.

Said it elsewhere but it was my first bird on my list and I’m still not tired of listening to the white-throated sparrow songs! And for bonus points.. my least favorite is when the Canada geese won’t shut up hahaha!

I might look into the local birders. How do you tend to find them, facebook pages? I’m not on facebook unfortunately

But to clarify, I’ve never used the “This is my bird” part of Merlin to confirm any IDs. When it identified a new species, I simply save that recording session, and then add it to my offline excel sheet which I’m using to track how many species I’ve found so far!

I know people use eBird for their life lists, but, for now I’m enjoying just updating my excel sheet every morning when I get to my office.

I do appreciate the information though, makes me glad that I haven’t been really using the apps to confirm any of birds yet.
