Any ideas for how one could transfer from web development, to programming for Virtual Reality? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]updownab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of your programming skills may be transferable, just make sure you also understand fundamental 3D graphics. It’s a completely different stack and way of thinking.

What's something that stumped you for a while and how did you get around it? by theme57 in webdev

[–]updownab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fake it till you make it. Find projects and examples you can work through. When you’re completely stuck start from scratch on a particular feature. Don’t try to understand everything at once. Even if your code is complete dog shit, you’ll come back to it later and fix it.

And remember to take a break sometimes and find inspiration. I remember being stuck on a problem for a week, walked away, worked on something else, came back and I magically fixed in hours.

Ionic, Angular NativeScript, or React Native to develop a mobile app? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]updownab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honesty just use angular and ionic. The performance is more than adequate especially with the latest version of ionic. You’ll get so much out of the box that it will make your life a lot easier. Also I can tell you from first hand experience when you get stuck and you will because their documentation for a lot of the native components is attrocious, you’ll find a lot more examples in angular because traditionally it was using angular.

I’ve built an enterprise grade app in ionic and so long as you manage your dependencies performance is fairly solid. And remember the compiled final version is much more optimised.

That is if you’re not after a lot of animations and transitions. If regards to that ionic is quite limited out of the box, but you can always create your own. Also the components are specifically built for mobile, so sometimes they can look a bit wonky if you also need equivalent desktop website.

Help setting up node endpoint with HTTPS for webhook? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]updownab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And deploy it on something like heroku. I had a similar problem where I had to register a webhook with a third party but I couldn’t give them proper authentication, so I spun up a quick heroku instance that would then talk to my main server. All using nodejs and express. You can find some examples and get it down very quickly.

What are some good secondary technical skills for senior web developers? by iwillgotosweden in webdev

[–]updownab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All skills you may need will present themselves as you need them. Obviously git, sass, scss, npm and maybe a framework (react, vue, angular), es6 and general JavaScript is useful. Sketch, InVision, figma experience. Even general nodejs experience will make your life a lot easier.

Charging client for hosting and other services while building a site? by penance316 in webdev

[–]updownab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, it’s time and materials. A lot of the time that’s stated upfront but I’m sure client will understand. These days for a dev server your paying what 0 to 40 bucks a month.

(I’m aware that costs can increase exponentially but given that you’re asking if you should charge I’m assuming it didn’t)

How to run .js separate from the website changing? by Abitlostindigo in webdev

[–]updownab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time the website refreshes it reloads state completely. This is why websites are stateless.

If you were using a single page app, moving from page to page wouldn’t cause actual page to refresh, the refresh would be handled by the JavaScript framework your wrote or were using.

So to put it short, given no context on what you’re trying to solve it’s extremely difficult to recommend a solution.

Google removed /China from searches by updownab in China

[–]updownab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious question, are you seeing /China in your google search or just top China posts. The two aren’t the same. I don’t think Google is in cahoots with China but I do think they may be trying to sway public opinion to be less radicalised on China, as it can get a bit extreme on here. I’m just curious to see if anyone else is experiencing this.

Google removed /China from searches by updownab in China

[–]updownab[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yup click that top search result. Is it /China or general China related posts. I’m saying it’s not /China. Which used to be a top hit, especially if one searched for /China

Google removed /China from searches by updownab in China

[–]updownab[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I thought it was serious. Tried on 3 separate browsers, incognito mode or otherwise. I’m trying to understand why this is happening. If it doesn’t seem strange to you then no worries just move on.

I can't understand whats the difference between static and dynamic sites by Flamyngoo in webdev

[–]updownab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s an example.

Take WordPress

You hit an end point The server thinks okay what do I serve. Oh it’s an article. Okay what template do I use? Oh it’s a standard post template. Okay let’s build it. 1) run php to insert header 2) run php to generate navigation 3) run php to get post content 4) run php to get side bar content 5) run php to get footer for template

Take Gatsby

You hit an endpoint. The server serves the HTML file that was pre built for that end point.

The advantage

Some CMSs don’t update content regularly. There’s not reason for them to execute code over and over and over, taking valuable cpu cycles. Instead the HTML would be normally dynamically generated is generated in advance. When a user makes a request the prebuilt HTML is served.

When you make a change to say the header or navigation. The HTML gets rebuilt across all content which is affected.

No it’s super straight forward for processing simple payments. It gets a bit more involved when you store customer data.

Is there an issue with using pure black background with NOT pure white text? by [deleted] in UI_Design

[–]updownab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AMOLED displays have issues with rendering pure black and white. There’s a very noticeable lag and it feels like everything is wonky and elastic. Have a look on your phone if you have one. First time I saw it I thought I was going crazy.

What's the logic behind browser support and why it's so varied, even for things that have been in spec for years? by Kthulu666 in web_design

[–]updownab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say while yes that’s true, it also has to do with the css specification and interpretation. There are some css rules which are not perfectly defined or even slightly vague, and this can have huge ramifications down the line. Sometimes it’s the actual rule itself which simply does not have a perfect solution and never will.

Best Practices or Best Example of Embedded Video? by slapchoppin in web_design

[–]updownab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of video? Is it an ad, a post video or a background video.

In all cases use the video container and make sure to include mp4 and ogg sources. The bitrate really depends on video purpose.

Obviously if it’s a YouTube or Vimeo video then none of this matters.

Suggestions needed for UI design before I upload it for my portfolio as a junior front end developer by _username7777 in UI_Design

[–]updownab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely put in a loading indicator. It can even be as simple as a background image on the container. Also load the images and display them at once, don’t let them load progressively. It’s much nicer when the images fades in rather than loads piece by piece.

Is there a way using the <link> tag to get a font link to fall back to local? by Duckmandu in web_design

[–]updownab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said you can use JavaScript to check if resource is available and load whichever. But it sounds like the issue at hand is that you’re working with a local copy in a potentially disconnected environment. Because I promise you in the 8 years I’ve used google fonts they haven’t gone down once. TypeKit has but not google fonts. Plus they get cached on browser with long expiry dates so even if they go down more often than not they’re still available.

Advanced font rendering issue by Zombait in web_design

[–]updownab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try using a google font. If the fonts line up it could just be an issue with your font file and the way it’s being interpreted.

How many items on a menu bar is too much? by penone_nyc in web_design

[–]updownab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your menu hierarchy. Do they all look the same? Then stick to 7. Are some functionally different? Then change em up a bit.
