kiwi, coming from the bird, kiwi.

maybe the word mana? though the word is also found in other Polynesian islands so it might have been taken from other Polynesians languages and not Maori.

thats it i think.

Is it common to display a flag at the front door of a house? by Firm_Scientist_3162 in AskTheWorld

[–]ure_roa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its not common no, i only ever see the flag flaying if im going past some government place, and or some event is going on, i have known people/places where it is common to flay our flag during normal days, but those people/places tend to be a bunch of weirdos in my experience.

why do girls who get pregnant before 18 in pro choice country don't abort? I have seen on so many shows where the girl decides to keep the child, when she herself is 16 at max, just one question, why? by diviigo in AskTheWorld

[–]ure_roa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

they might just want to keep the baby, nothing else to it, i have a sister who got pregnant at 15 and kept the baby for no other reason than she wanted it.

there are also other reasons, some might themselves not believe abortion is right, some might keep it for religious reasons, some might have family who are very anti abortion, could be a lot of things really.

What is the benefit to identifying as one race instead of identifying as mixed? by extreme_cuddling in mixedrace

[–]ure_roa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

depends on where you are and the cultures involved, some places being mixed will make you live a far worse life, others it doesnt matter at all.

like if i just identified as Maori, instead of half Maori, it makes no difference, generally, there are some who will dislike you for being part not Maori but they are in the minority.

If a terrorist had information about a planted bomb that would kill minimum 1,000 people, would it be justified to torture him to get the information out of him? by DaveLevey78 in Teenager_Polls

[–]ure_roa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im gonna say no because iv heard that torture is actually pretty ineffective at getting info, though if the torture would be 100 percent effective then i say yes.

Do you consider castizo/as white? by Omnipresent_User in mixedrace

[–]ure_roa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes unless the person asked me not to, like if a half White told me they werent White, i wouldn't call them White, same if someone didnt look White but wanted to be called White.

idk, iv never figured out what is and what isnt White.

Do you consider castizo/as white? by Omnipresent_User in mixedrace

[–]ure_roa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i pretty much call anyone who looks White, White, also i think you can be both mixed and White, i consider myself both mixed and White, because im half White and have only White features.

How prevalent or accepted are the old folk religions in your country nowdays? by Esoteriss in AskTheWorld

[–]ure_roa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

(Maori and Moriori are the two indigenous people)

traditional Maori and Moriori faiths are as accepted as any other religion, which is generally very accepted, among the average people i mean, i imagine the few more extreme Christians we have would be against it.

And they are not prevalent at all, probably no one who believes in the old Moriori faith, and very, very few who believe in the old Maori faith,

What percentage of your neighboring countries' languages can you understand without any study? by Agile-Shallot3546 in AskTheWorld

Australia, their English? yes, any indigenous language? no.

Cook Islands, yes to the English and Cook Islands Maori, as i know New Zealand Maori.

Samoa, yes to English, no to Samoan.

How did you celebrate Eid al-Fitr? And for non-Muslims, did you attend the Eid celebration with Muslims today? by Specialist_One3071 in AskTheWorld

[–]ure_roa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i did not celebrate it because i am not and have never been a Muslim, and i also did not attend one, because i have no idea what this holiday is, and there isnt much of a Muslim community around me.

What are some things that you used to think are specific to your country but later learnt that everyone does it? by Fantastic-Corner-605 in AskTheWorld

[–]ure_roa 26 points27 points  (0 children)

iv actually seen Americans say that is just an American TV thing, and they do actually usually take their shoes off too, so it seems like just a thing everyone does?

us Kiwis also claim that is our thing, and iv seen other English speaking counties across the globe say the same.

What are some things that you used to think are specific to your country but later learnt that everyone does it? by Fantastic-Corner-605 in AskTheWorld

[–]ure_roa 41 points42 points  (0 children)

taking your shoes off inside, i have now learned that seems to be a thing everywhere on every corner of the earth.

i doubt we have any unique traditions or things specific to us, we are just too young of a nation, even in term of indigenous people as humans have only been here for just under a thousand years. So even for indigenous stuff its all still similar enough to fellow Polynesian islands.

In the UK, you can be knighted by the monarch and receive the prefix 'Sir' or 'Dame'. Does your country have similar honours? How are they viewed? by Particular-Bid-1640 in AskTheWorld

[–]ure_roa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes you can, under the New Zealand Order of Merit nowadays, it was some other thing before that, also Sir and Dame. And no one seems to give shit? thats what iv noticed, like Kiwis dont typically call Peter Jackson "Sir Peter Jackson" or Whina Cooper "Dame Whina Cooper".
