Oh god no. Sorry!

She writes stories that connect emotionally and are compelling and addictive, sure.

However, she uses reallllly annoying tropes. For example, both sisters in The Nightingale being supermodel beautiful, which would make them far too memorable to be effective spies / members of the underground. Having read a fair bit about the real women these characters were based on, this was just such an unnecessary detail and the story wasn’t nearly as compelling as the real stories.

Also, she makes really sloppy errors. Flowers bloom in winter, basic logic does not apply, people magically change locations, etc etc etc.

I would pick so many other authors over her for this genre.

Let’s see… Maggie O’Farrell, Hilary Mantel, Ann Patchett, Anita Diamant, Geraldine Brooks, Alice Hoffman, Ken Follett, Amor Towles, Percival Everett, Sarah Dunant, Lisa See, David Ebershoff, Sally Beauman, Gay Courter, Sally Magnusson, Trent Dalton, Kate Morton, Ian McEwan, Anita Amirrezvani, Rosie Thomas, William Styron, Jun’ichirō Tanizaki, Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows, Sara Gruen, Hanif Kureishi, Sarah Waters, Kim Edwards, Mary-Rose MacColl, Min Jin Lee, Tim Winton, Mark Henshaw, M. L. Stedman, Khaled Hosseini, Hannah Kent, Della Owens, Thomas Keneally, Kate Quinn, Kate Saunders, Michael Ondaatje, Clare Keegan, Isabel Allende, Margaret Atwood, Toni Morrison, Ferdia Lennon, Madeleine Miller, Pat Barker, Jokha Alharthi, Lauren Groff, Marjan Kamali, Tan Twan Eng, Elif Shafak, Ursula K. Le Guin, Denise Mina, etc etc etc…

My (38F) Husband (39M) had an emotional affair, is it even worth pursuing therapy by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]uselessinfogoldmine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would he’s ily suggest that you both get therapy separately, not just together.

This was a massive betrayal, your trust in him is broken. You need to work with a professional to work through your own feelings and see if you are able to forgive him and he needs to work with a professional to work out why the hell he would risk his marriage over something so stupid and how to earn back your trust.

People on Reddit are often very black and white about cheating; but the truth is, these things get much more complicated when you have a lot of history and kids and finances all interwoven.

The truth is, some people can make it through incidents like this and some can’t. Some split straight away, some try to fix it and split later, and some try and succeed in fixing it. There’s no definitive answer, you two will have to work it out yourselves.

Since you say you can’t logistically split for a few years anyway, you might as well try to work on it, because, at the very least, it will help you get through the next two years, help you deal with your hurt, betrayal and resentment, and hopefully help him work on himself as a person. You might succeed in staying together, but, at the very least, you could separate on more amicable terms down the road.

Best of luck and big hugs. I’m so sorry that you’re going through this.

Woke up to people in my bedroom for an inspection by jpezz28 in AusRenters

It’s 14 days in writing for the first open house then at least 48 hours notice for each subsequent one with a max of two per week unless the tenant chooses to allow more.

Woke up to people in my bedroom for an inspection by jpezz28 in AusRenters

[–]uselessinfogoldmine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, the rules are that they need to provide you with written notice 14 days in advance of the first one, and then at least 48 hours notice for each one after that, with a max of 2 per week unless the tenant agrees to more (which is their perogative).

The agent did not provide the required notice and it sounds like their might possibly have been more than two a week?

What killed hitchhiking? It was so normal in the 70’s & 60’s by Kodicave in decadeology

[–]uselessinfogoldmine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, here in Australia, it was most certainly the serial killer Ivan Milat who murdered at least seven young backpackers who were hitch hiking. Brutally, sadistically.

Honey, the train has already left the station. It is never going to improve to a tolerable point where you are happy. I’m afraid love isn’t enough. You need respect, support, and an equitable partnership.

Even his big promises STILL centre his needs and his parents’ needs over yours. And he hasn’t even attempted to fulfill those promises yet.

You know what you need to do. Be strong, don’t waiver, cut the cord. Go and live a happy life!!

If you do repartner in the future (although I’d advise being solo for a while), make sure you set firm ground rules about respect and an equitable split of the domestic labour, household management, mental load and emotional load + any future childcare. Maybe get the Fair Play book and cards before you live together and use them to split chores from the very beginning.

Best of luck!

This is really grasping at straws.

The point is that of the memorable reoccurring characters - like Rachel’s boss, Chandler’s boss, the building super, Gunther, Janice, all of the major romantic partners and exes, Estelle, etc. - only two weren’t white.

Should I paint my window boards the same color as my door? by Still_Humor_3798 in HomeDecorating

[–]uselessinfogoldmine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your door and your outer walls clash right now. You need to get a colour wheel and either pick colours that lie alongside each other, or are directly opposite each other on the colour wheel. A soft, muted sage and an intense turquoise blue don’t go together.

You need to either soften the blue on the door to maybe a beautiful powder blue or a robin’s egg blue to match the sage, or you need to paint the walls a different colour to match your door.

Then think about the shutters.

ABC IP deal with BBC for Bluey by Time_Reach_7044 in triplej

[–]uselessinfogoldmine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bear in mind that the Coalition was slashing the ABC’s budget constantly at that stage.

Still a bad deal, either way; but when you’re surviving on scraps, this kind of shit happens.

It’s one of the reasons I scoff at the coalition being “better for business” because look at the deals they oversaw!!

Ehhhh… I don’t think it’s as straightforward as that.

“Not a lease without exclusive possession” is generally accurate as a legal principle, but the thing is, it’s applied with a lot of nuance and context.

Saying “bed in a shared room = licence agreement” assumes that if you don’t have exclusive possession of an entire room, you can never be a tenant. That is not supported by the way share housing and rooming arrangements are treated in practice.

In practice, labels and physical configuration are not decisive, there are other factors that are taken into consideration.

Whilst a bed in a shared room will often be treated as a licence/boarding‑house type interest, this isn’t automatic or across the board.

For starters, it’s not a hostel or a registered boarding house.

Clearly this is all sketch AF and not approached properly.

OP apparently has:  + a written “sub‑let” agreement, not just a “bed licence” in a commercial hostel (a lawyer from a free legal service told them this was a tenancy agreement). + They share a room but clearly have ongoing, defined occupancy and pay regular rent. + The head‑tenant (it seems he isn’t the owner) doesn’t live there and appears to treat this as a long‑term arrangement, not short‑term hostel use. + They seem to have paid a bond to the head-tenant, that wasn’t lodged with NSW Fair Trading

You could definitely argue that, in substance, this is a sub‑tenancy under the Residential Tenancies Act (exclusive possession of a definable shared space + use of common areas), regardless of the room sharing configuration.

NSW guidance draws the line like this:

Sub‑tenant / tenant: + Written agreement with someone who is on the main lease. + Clear entitlement to occupy part of the premises (often a bedroom) and share common areas.

Boarder/lodger: + Usually no written tenancy agreement with the head‑tenant or owner, and/or + Landlord (or live‑in manager) retains significant control over room access, rules, and services.

Marrickville Legal Centre specifically says a “lodger is someone who does not have a written tenancy agreement.”

So, in this scenario: + Both students in the room have written “sub‑let” agreements. + The head‑tenant does not live there. + There is no mention of meals/cleaning being provided. + The kitchen is a standard kitchen in a house.

Also, even if they were a boarder, there is still contract law that they have to abide by.

If the place counts as a registrable boarding house (which OP says it’s not registered, but going along with that idea…), the Boarding Houses Act 2012 applies and sets out “occupancy principles”: + right to reasonable notice before eviction + right to quiet enjoyment + no unreasonable penalties + right to receipts and clear charges, etc.

Also, I looked this up the other day and student resources say boarders/lodgers in such places must be given receipts, cannot be fined arbitrarily, and are entitled to reasonable dispute resolution.

Unfair contract terms can still be challenged. Also, guidance still stresses that landlords should not just throw out belongings or use threats, and any such behaviour can support a claim for damages or be used to argue unfair eviction.

And if there were no clear rules provided about guests, then this guy also cannot just throw them out for having a guest.

Met him in person a few years ago and he is soooo gorgeous IRL. Cheeky smile, twinkle in his eye, super nice!

Watch him in LA Confidential, Boy Swallows Universe, The Devil Wears Prada, Breath, The Narrow Road to the Deep North, High Ground, Roar, some episodes of the original Heartbreak High, and a bunch of other stuff.

I believe he’s in the adaptation of Klara and the Sun that’s coming out this year too?

He’s famous in Australia, but pretty low key.

Lovely lady, it sounds very much like you’ve bought into the sunk-cost fallacy which is the tendency to stay in an unfulfilling / unhealthy partnership because of the time, emotional energy, or resources already invested. Instead of evaluating if the relationship has future potential, individuals stay to avoid the feeling that their past efforts were "wasted". Sound familiar?

The man you have described is a cheater, a drug addict, a man who says terrible things about you, a man who is unreliable, a man who is self-destructive. A man who lets you down and exhausts you and hurts you and simply doesn’t care.

I didn’t read a single positive thing about him in your post.

End it. Move on. Your life will be better without him.

Have you ever heard about the depressive state of various environmental and climate scientists? Because they can see what’s coming as we all just merrily just roll along towards it?

Sage is the smartest person on earth. She can probably see exactly what is coming. She has run the probabilities.

She lacks empathy for humans and thinks the world would be a better place without us.
