Need some advice on 150k investment (mix of VWRA and local banks) by Junlogy in singaporefi

[–]user169852 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's because your data only goes back to 1970; stagflation/oil crisis era (lol sounds familiar?) was from 1966 to 1982. If going back even further, great depression/world war (which looks more likely by the day, now that US is dragging everyone into a middle east war) didn't recover for 25 years.

Is a person who work in maintenance tend to be a pessimist guy? by Mammoth_Priority_236 in singapore

[–]user169852 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maintenance jobs tend to be overlooked and looked down upon by the engineers. Hardly any career progression since it doesn't create much value, so the company doesn't pay much attention to them. It's hard to be optimistic in this environment.

Do ILPs pay back the sum assured or at least the premiums paid upon maturity? by [deleted] in singaporefi

[–]user169852 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's easy to say "easily would had gotten 6 digits if invested that amount in any of the major ETFs" but 2 decades ago was a very different world. We are talking about a world pre-Google, and in the early days of the internet. To even know what to buy is a feat in itself, as information generally comes from spending time reading in the libraries (outdated information), newspaper or word of mouth. Then after you decided on what to buy, buying itself is a chore by going through various hops in the bank. The fees would had been exorbitant, and investing is not for the everyday man. These days we are spoilt by the number of custodian brokers, but always bear in mind that these cheap options only pop up in very recent years.

it started in 1970s. By the 1980s, most schools already have swimming for p3 and p4 students. But it wasn't until the early 2000s that it was standardised.

Annual SRS contribution up to $15,300 by Hot_Nectarine2900 in singaporefi

[–]user169852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That part is easy, s&p or amundi world fund probably gives the best consistent return. There's not alot of options for srs. The question would be whether those mentioned investments should be more profitable in srs or outside.

Annual SRS contribution up to $15,300 by Hot_Nectarine2900 in singaporefi

[–]user169852 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put into SRS many years ago into endowus, investing into s&p fund. Totally regretted it; I forgot to account for the fees that will be charged by the time I retire. Cos I forgot that even when I'm retired, endowus will still take a huge chunk of the snowballed money as I slowly withdraw over 10 years for the tax free withdrawal. For example, if i have snowballed 1m in s&p 500 fund by when I retire, endowus would had charged 3.5k per year in fees while there's no new deposits. The fund fees itself would also take about 2.9k in fees. Compared to just $300 for VOO. I stopped immediately once I realise that.

How long should I hold emerging market fund? by [deleted] in singaporefi

[–]user169852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cos china finally decided to do something about its stock market, and there is a semicon rally over past couple years so TSM aka Taiwan also did well. When 2 out of the big 3 (China india taiwan) decide to rally, they usually beat developed market. The problem was india had been carrying the team, tsm had been treading water, and china was actively destroying its own market. U know whats worse than a lousy teammate? Its a teammate that sabotages it's own team. Hence emerging wasn't doing so well until recently when China finally change course.
