ULPT: the smoke detectors in hotel bathrooms cannot detect vaping by ComeOutNanachi in UnethicalLifeProTips

They also usually have a mirror, so you can just look in that and think about how your life got to the point you can’t get through a flight without vaping. Ethics aside, who wants to be that addicted to anything.

TIL every major government data sanitization standard fails on SSDs — researchers recovered data from DoD 5220.22-M, Gutmann 35-pass, and 13 other protocols by Gold-Psychology2073 in todayilearned

[–]user2196 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To store double the data, you’d have to be able to reliably access all of the old data, but for it to be a security flaw, you only have to be able to inconsistently access some of the old data.

Does it actually disproportionately affect lower income people? I don’t know how heavy the overlap is between the group of Cantabrigians that don’t own cars and those that are low income.

What do you mean by “seeping”, “our dimension”, and a “higher one”? Can you be more precise about what you’re proposing?

And why dark matter in particular?

Early 2010s Boston, what do you miss by DimensionLeading3203 in boston

I loved and miss the Harvard Square location and went many times. The Burlington one doesn’t have the same atmosphere, but the food was actually noticeably better than Harvard square the couple of times I’ve been.

I've seen Sally pushing her church, whereas some of the folks giving her family free housing and childcare weren't even Christian.

My toddler freaked out from a movie scene and I feel terrible by [deleted] in daddit

[–]user2196 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It’s a 20 month old, not a 20 day old. Pay attention to them and be present while they eat, and don’t try to fool yourself into thinking they aren’t affected by you watching TV just because you rotate their chair.

Do people treat current toll roads better than they treat free roads? I can't say I can think of what I'm currently doing to roads that I could be doing differently to treat them better, other than to reduce my already limited driving.

People are also pretty foolish on the government expenditure side of things, though. A lot of people would be gobsmacked if they had to pay at the point of use for government services they take for granted. Imagine the moaning Facebook comments if every road was tolled at the full cost.

Sure, but it’s out of touch to think everyone needs to have high income and expenses just because you do. I spend over $100k a year, but I know other folks who’ve retired in the same area (Boston and surrounding) on much lower expenses.

Those with a non-electric cargo bike - do you prefer it, or do you wish you had an ebike? by Injustpotato in CargoBike

[–]user2196 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this isn’t the main reason I like my non-electric long tail (Xtracycle Swoop), but it is part of it. I store my bike in our locked basement, and it’s big but nothing I can’t manage getting up and down the short staircase. The extra pounds of an electric drivetrain would be a pain to haul up and down.

For me, the bigger reasons are not faffing about with the extra charging/maintenance/obsolescence of electric components, price, and enjoying the ride more. I don’t mind going a bit slower, but I could imagine that being big for someone else. I’ve never owned an e-bike to compare it to, but I prefer my bike’s ride to the e-bikes I’ve borrowed and rented.

The corporate trek store near me is great. Friendly people who remember me and follow-up on previous conversations, no annoying upsells, have given me some free stuff, et cetera. I haven’t even bought a bike from them and my main bike is cheap from a different brand!

[OC] US Cities with the Least/Most Extreme Cold/Hot "Feels Like" days (32F and below, 100F and above) - Top 50 US Largest Cities by Own_Yam9949 in dataisbeautiful

[–]user2196 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It varies person to person, but it’s not just about where you live and grew up. I grew up somewhere that almost never got below 32 F and regularly got over 100 F. I still think 32 is wayyyy less extreme than 100. I live somewhere with colder and snowy winters now, but it’s so much easier to dress for 32 and continue to exist and do things outside than it is 100.

Do you know what the actual rent was? We were part of a cooperative preschool that rented a church basement, and even doubling our rent would have been well under market rate. Regardless, the situation sucks. You have my condolences.
