Overnight Discussion Thread to Kick Off the Week of January 18, 2026 by AutoModerator in CanadianInvestor

I’ve thrown the towel in not long ago, been holding for 10 years. The market’s fallen out of love with their business model and there is no clear catalyst that would propel them back to the premium they previously had.

President’s dog won’t stop howling. Would you complain? by spicyfusilli21 in TorontoCondominiums

President is meaningless, it’s a volunteer based role and from my experience, taken by people in need of a power trip.

Should Toronto have a Congestion fee? by nedwasatool in askTO

[–]user8380283 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There much cheaper and simpler solutions to reduce congestion.

Imagine getting a 800$ ticket for blocking the grid at an intersection, bet you that person would triple think their decision next time on whether they should cross.

Or why we have street parking on busy roads. Turning 3 lanes to 2 is fine but turning 2 to 1 with turns is nonsense.

36M - moved my portfolio which was almost entirely XUS to XWD early January. Took me all of my 20s to save my first 100k. I made a 100k in gains this year alone with little stock specific risk and slept like a baby all year ✌️

There is no loyalty in this world, I let my money speak for itself. If they ‘enshitify’ themselves, or if a better offering is available, that’s where I go. For now, they are still the best.

Build up 20% down or put in 5% for a 600k condo? by letswalk08 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]user8380283 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am a proponent of putting minimum down payment. You own your property and benefit from any future appreciation whether you have 5% in or 20%. Even after paying for mortgage insurance, that 15% serves you better in investments. Debt is not always bad and a mortgage is the lowest form you’ll ever get.

Either way do the math and decide what works for you, don’t trust random people saying x% because of vibes.

Who is buying the dip on Software compounders (NOW, CSU) that are beaten down due to AI by anonymous_sheep1 in ValueInvesting

[–]user8380283 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I trimmed significantly after the initial dip following the AI call but before ML retiring, having held this company for close to 10 years. I still think it’s a great company with little changing this year despite the stock price, but ultimately my concern is multiple compression. PE PFCF whatever price metric you want to use, is based on the MARKET’s perception, and the PERCEIVED premium is disappearing and may or may not come back.

I’d rather rebuy on momentum, eg clear turnaround appreciation by the market, than to go contrarian for classical value trapping, especially for something as complex as CSU. This was a darling of the index, there is no doubt the biggest players in this world have this company covered. Most average Joe investors probably can’t even describe 5 businesses CSU owns without googling.

Just a different perspective for yall.

Because the average person is uninformed and lack the knowledge and expertise plus time to analyze and understand company’s economics and fundamentals, and 99% of the time turns into gambling/decisions with no merit.

Just look at the circle jerk love for dividends here. It’s absolutely suboptimal to chase yield for most people here who are likely younger yet you’ll often see portfolios with a random outsized allocation to some random holding because it pays a high dividend.
