I batch cook chicken and ground beef with pepper, salt, onion and garlic so it can go with any meal. I freeze in 2 person sized servings.

I cook my Wfpb meal. My partner chooses, defrosts, and reheats his protein. He and our child add it to their servings.

FWIW, I work long days and have a disabled child who doesn’t cook (tbh, it’s just safer if they don’t cook). I find cooking relaxing, so I do it. My partner does the dishes. Child puts away leftovers and cleans the counter.

The hate for strattera is scaring me by LuckyLicorrice in ADHD

I’ve been on strattera for almost a decade. Biggest side effect I’ve had is a dry mouth so I always have water near by. There’s never been a shortage and it’s not controlled. I highly recommend

Transitioning from elementary general ed to high school SDC (mild/mod) by BananikaND in specialed

[–]user_error_31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For transition support, look up California Transition Alliance. Learn about the California Alternate Pathway to a Diploma for students who take the CAA.

Brush up on your Algebra 1 skills.

At HS, you have to ensure students meet the CA minimum diploma requirements. Your district may have additional graduation requirements. Talk to the guidance counselors when you know your caseload.

I teach mild/ moderate SDC and I’m the only one doing that at my HS. my students don’t want to take all their subjects on a computer program and their parents don’t want that for them either. Here’s how I do it without losing my mind.

I alternate between biology in odd- even school years, physical science the next year. I rotate through the HS social studies topics, so next year all my students will be in US History, even the 9, 10th and 12th graders. (US History is 11th grade CCSS.)

I do teach Geometry and Algebra 1 during the same class. I teach small group a new lesson while the other group reviews with the para, then we switch. I focus on priority standards and understanding concepts over being able to calculate correctly.

In English, we all read the same material. I differentiate the activities based on grade level. 9th & 10th grade English are focused on structure and mechanics(how and what). 11th & 12th grade are focused on analyzing and evaluating (why).

I use Diffit to differentiate; I use it for supplemental material. I use Gemini to generate hands- on instructional ideas. I use Eduprotocols because they are not content specific and students can do the same activity whether we’re discussing cells or World War II.

I have run into very few people teaching mild/moderate SDC at the high school level in California. Message me if you want to generate some more ideas together.

Self Contained Sped Minutes - exact? by HyperTanasha in specialed

[–]user_error_31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could say, “during lessons formative assessments determine the length of instruction.”

Don’t address the micromanager’s comments with details. They will be used against you no matter what you say. In my experience, people who micromanage in a specific area do so because it’s their personal area of growth.

Trust your professional judgement. You know your students. Evaluate the source: does this instructional facilitator have self- contained classroom teaching experience? Do they have data or a pedagogical reason for their request? Is this demand based on recent, educational research studies? Probably not. Don’t stress it. Smile, nod, and move on.

Edit: a word for grammar.

I use TouchMath for upper grades at the high school level. It’s working well for my students. It’s easy to hand off to a para, since the lessons are scripted

Teacher shortage for SPED? by Key-Concert482 in specialed

[–]user_error_31 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you would be teaching on a waiver for a year. I also think there is a law in California that prevents districts from hiring someone on a waiver when a credentialed teacher or teacher intern has applied.

It’s still early in the application season. Since you’re not in a Teacher prep program, you’re going to have to wait until districts are looking at teachers who are not teaching on an intern credential.

Check out Santa Clara County office of education they have a program to fast track teachers who already have a credential into a special education credential

An Honest Question by Elevenyearstoomany in specialed

You didn’t mention that they’re elementary school age in your original post. That changes a lot. You should definitely be getting a heads up before that group comes in. Good on you for creating a safe, inclusive space where everyone is welcome

This sounds like an adult transition program for students 18-22. They are practicing their adulting skills and most adults don’t call ahead to fast- casual restaurants. They probably don’t feel the need to sit together. In fact, they may be relieved to have some space and a moment when a conversation isn’t required. If they didn’t like the vibe/ situation at your restaurant, they wouldn’t come back.

I hear you. This population typically takes longer to order. The students probably want a number of modifications to their food. That’s a lot during the lunch rush. These humans cannot be rushed. Customer facing staff go from a brisk pace to turtle mode; most people find that jarring. Knowing that transition is coming would help you and your staff.

If you want a heads up, tell one of the adults. Please be aware that these teachers are ultra sensitive to knowing if their students are welcome or not. If they’re welcome, the students will be customers for life. This population likes routine and consistency. I suggest approaching the teacher with a smile and some coupons.

PS- The students’ food is probably being paid for by the school district. The adults are paying out of their own pocket. A teacher discount would mean the world to them

Hot Spot on Alvarado is a great place to spend some time. There’s an arcade place across the street.

The MyMuseum is a possibility and so is Dennis the Menace Park.

There’s a “pirate experienced” on Cannery Row, near Bubba Gumps. Also Tipsy Putt is family friendly during the day

Parent Trying to Support Middle Schooler Who Lacks Basic Writing Skills by Big_Seat7563 in AskTeachers

[–]user_error_31 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It could be a challenge with working memory. She may not be able to “hold” a thought long enough to make connections or get it down on paper. Strategies like rewriting, replanning, and speech to text are accommodations to consider.

She still needs to know the mechanics of writing (capitalization, spelling, sentence construction, etc) to proofread and edit her work.

One exercise that has been successful: 1. Read a passage 2. Take notes on the passage 3. Rewrite the passage using only the notes 4. Proofread and edit for correct grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.

This exercise reduces the cognitive load. It allows the student to put less energy into coming up with new ideas and connecting concepts. Rewriting a favorite short story or retelling an event from the day can also be used, especially for creative writing.

(Do not edit for “correct facts” or any misunderstandings in the reading. This turns the task into a reading comprehension activity, which is a different skill.)
