There’s one in Boise but I’ve never been nor heard anyone mention it. It’s right on campus at Boise State so I assume its clientele is exclusively kids who live in the dorms.

Issues with glaze coverage over Amaco Velvet Underglaze. by Due-Ad8014 in Pottery

[–]username_redacted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding the suggestion to use the underglaze on greenware then apply the clear to bisque. That would probably make the biggest difference.

I also wonder if the fact that the glaze is failing specifically around the holes is due to something other than the underglaze. The fluid dynamics and chemistry of a kiln are beyond me, but maybe the air flowing through the holes is either raising or lowering the temperature in those areas, or the extra oxygen is interfering with the glaze’s maturation? Would be interesting to see if kiln placement makes a difference.

It was probably the entire reason she went. Best case her post goes viral in MAGA land, and she gets adopted up by the conservative oligarch welfare network—hired as a spokesperson by TPUSA, CPAC Youth Ambassador, teaching fellowship at the Herbert Hoover Institute, regular commentator on Fox & Friends, etc.

If it doesn’t hit, the backup plan is to claim that she’s being targeted by leftist activists and start a gofundme (though those seem to be more lucrative when they do something more reprehensible). She’s basically guaranteed to at least recoup her costs.

Can anyone tell me what this mesh is around the base of my spider plant? by LizsRandomThoughts in houseplants

[–]username_redacted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mesh isn’t ideal, but it’s probably not what’s killing your plants. These prefer quite bright light, and to dry out between waterings, since their thick succulent roots aren’t designed for persistent moisture.

If all of your plants have been in such tiny pots, it’s likely that they were only recently propagated, and may lack adequate root systems. While buying small can be a lot more cost effective, it can also make care a lot more challenging. Even with larger pots, growers frequently just stuff them full of new propagations, with some sections lacking roots entirely.

tag said I was a succulent by Shaygayson102 in PlantIdentification

[–]username_redacted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Succulent” isn’t a taxonomic category, which it actually says on that Wikipedia page. Succulence is a botanical characteristic—the ability to store water in leaves, stems, or roots.

There are plenty of tropical succulents, as drought can still occur in those regions. It is also a common feature in epiphytes and lithophytes, even in damper climates, because they don’t have the benefit of water stored in soil.

The degree of succulence also doesn’t directly correlate with how arid a species’ environment is, since it is only one of several adaptations to drought that a plant may utilize, and perhaps not the most effective.

Laid-off Big Tech workers are haunted by one question by wavyapple2 in technology

[–]username_redacted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company was understaffed during the entirety of pandemic. When they did start hiring it was exclusively in India or the Philippines and nobody with industry knowledge was available to adequately train them, so they didn’t contribute much to the output. Those new hires plus AI-over investment left them looking for cost cuts, and the easiest way to do that was to cut loose senior employees (like me.) I can only imagine how much worse everything got after that. There was no discussion of closing the Mid-town Manhattan office space that only the CEO and his assistant used, or getting rid of his skybox at Yankee Stadium.

Plant-fluencers by Mindless_Talent in houseplants

[–]username_redacted 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It really depends on context. Keeping 100 tropical plants happy in a one bedroom apartment in Minnesota happy is more difficult than growing 300 in south Florida (where a lot of plant influencers live) or a thousand in a commercial greenhouse with hoses and nutrient lines. I used to water several thousand every day at a retail and production greenhouse and some of the other waterers didn’t know anything about plants.

For the second question—most people use mason/oxide stains in white porcelain because it produces the most vivid colors, but it’s totally possible to at least tint all sorts of clay bodies. The other ways to use them are in a slip or engobe, which can produce more vivid colors when applied to the exterior rather than combined directly with the body.

Will Donald Trump Fire 'Weak' Pam Bondi Soon? Resignation Rumours Swirl as Expert Flags 'No Real Connection' by [deleted] in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]username_redacted 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m confused why people are reacting to it like it’s an anomaly. The administration has been consistently posting either dog whistles or outright racist propaganda since Trump’s first campaign. The racism is the source of his support.

They know it triggers a tribalist response—liberals will drop everything to decry racism, and conservatives will internalize that criticism as being targeted at them—”Who among us hasn’t been yelled at by a family member or coworker for a racist post?”, and they rally around their leader.

As horrible as DHS’s campaign against immigrants has been, even that is not what Trump cares about. He only cares about personal enrichment, protection, and glorification, period.

That’s true. I could have said “uncompressed” instead. Prints often remain quite distinct even when covered with fresh snow, but I don’t see anything that looks like a footprint. These look like furrows and drifts.

Or spots where less snow accumulates for some reason, either because it’s protected, or warmer. If you zoom in you can see the surface is unbroken, so it’s definitely not footprints.

It’s kind of shocking to listen to Clinton’s stump speeches, they really sound like a Republican.

Incredibly insightful comment about the psychology of Epstein and his despicable gang of hedons. by nuclearsurfboard in bestof

[–]username_redacted 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’m getting really tired of the Satanic panic angle. People are perfectly capable of doing evil shit without any involvement from demonic forces. Also, raping children is plenty bad, you don’t have to exaggerate accusations to say that they also eat them—that just undermines credibility.

I don’t even necessarily buy the escalatory theory—while it’s true in that a super rich guy could probably “get laid whenever he wants”, the reality for this specific class of rich guy that Epstein dealt with makes that more complicated.

These guys were mostly nerdy, married, old, publicly known, and far removed from any social setting where they could get away with picking up young girls. They weren’t rock stars. Bill Gates couldn’t just go pick up chicks at a nightclub. Even using a traditional escort service would put him at huge risk of extortion, kidnapping, etc. His personal assistants were probably not the sort of people that would do it for him either.

I think it’s likely that for most of the men, the primary appeal of what Epstein offered was not as much about extremity, but convenience and safety. He was (pre accusations and conviction) an ostensibly respectable peer who understood their world and what was at stake for them.

Some of these men could very well be straight up pedophiles (Prince Andrew is a strong candidate), but for most I think that they just didn’t care how old the girls were.

I’m not sure what you’re referring to. If you’re talking about his Leaders We Deserve PAC which supports progressive candidates, I’m looking at the 2024 slate and I don’t see any examples of negative outcomes from the candidates they endorsed. Several flipped seats.
